Learning voice is more than learning to coordinate muscles. In this video from Berklee Online’s Essentials of Teaching Contemporary Voice course, instructor Clare McLeod discusses motor learning and how that impacts voice learning. Energy may be thought of as physical, but it is also psychological; mental (cognitive), including attention, analysis, and decision; and perceptual, including sensory factors. To master an instrument you must not only understand the ins and outs of the instrument theoretically but also be comfortable with it physically/tactically. If you try to play a barre chord on a guitar for the first time, you will likely struggle to find the right position for your fingers. Even if you understand how the barre chord functions, you still haven’t developed the motor skills required to accomplish that task. Since the body is the singer’s instrument, motor learning is crucial in order to be able to use it most effectively and comfortably.
