@@SergioLeonardoCornejo That is a very nice idea, and when I want a nicer Pokemon canon, I use that, or something very similar to it. ...but what does the different levels of Pokeball mean? The Master Ball would have no purpose if they were just containers that Pokemon could just leave any time they wanted. If catching rate was based on badges instead of type of ball, it would be a whole lot nicer, since it would imply that they are staying out of respect for your training ability. But it isn't, and it sounds a little sketchy. (If you could explain the tiers of Pokeball in a way that is consistent with the notion that the Pokemon can leave, please tell me, I actually want to know if it can be explained in a realistic way while not being problematic.) Trainers abusing their Pokemon literally could not happen if it was all by choice.
I've seen two theory videos about Hisuian voltorb now and much to my surprise, neither have mentioned peat moss, which literally spreads its seeds by exploding.
Neato. I actually fist thought it looked like a Pineco, so I'm more inclined to the "there's a creature inside" theory, but I liked all your explanations. Specially the last one. I kinda wanna do it myself.
I really like the typing they decided to go with since we only have an Electric/Grass in Mow Rotom. Hoping to see more unique or rare type combos. Speaking of the type combo, I had this idea for a Grass starter that would be Grass/Electric Beaver with the middle stage possibly being a the region's Pikachu clone (Though unlikely to happen in a real game).
hmm you know the time, and the region is a pretty good explanation on why some pokemon type combos are rare, such as animals in real life. or they just have no idea how to implement them
It's kinda funny that Pikachu as the mascot gets more attention than its evolved form, even getting a gigantamax form and was debatably better than Raichu even before that, yet Raichu got a regional variant with a different type while Pikachu hasn't yet. You'd think giving the mascot a regional form would be a no brainer but maybe they are scared to alter something as familiar as Pikachu so drastically? Like at this point why give a region a Pikachu clone when you can give it a new regional Pikachu instead and have an alternate evolution method so you can evolve Pichu into the original and use the real thing as the true Pikachu clone functionally since the regional variant would have different typing? A grass/electric Pikachu clone could be cool but an actual grass/electric regional Pikachu variant would be even cooler imo. Maybe it would have a new Raichu form to go with it or maybe it would get a new branching evolution entirely, you evolve it with the Thunder stone to get a new Raichu form that highlights the electric side while downplaying the grass but if you evolve it with a Leaf stone you would get a new evolution that highlights the grass while downplaying the electric side. Idk could just be a cool way to give the mascot's whole line an interesting twist that also sort of plays into it being treated as Eevee's counterpart in Yellow and Let's Go by giving the regional Pikachu more than one stone evolution to choose from
I think it's likely Voltorb is a relative of other grass type pokemon that secondarily lost its grass typing. Partly because of people plugging up its hole and being annoyed by it, but also partly because wide-spread, industrialized electricity is right around the corner, opening a new niche in the environment for it to take over.
I’m no expert in seeds and gardening, but I’m pretty sure that if you had a particular garden and somebody comes along and potentially kills it with mystery seeds, you would be VERY unhappy with them.
That's not surprising, but it's also not the reason given for why people became irritated by it, that is because it tends to discharge it's electricity too easily when it gets all happy and excited; it's even seen annoying other Pokemon by doing this in the pair of shorts made to show it off. It's a similar problem for humans, except that they aren't as resilient to electric shocks as Pokemon tend to be, given they can battle until they get knocked out rather than fighting to the death; naturally, the Hisuian people don't appreciate being randomly shocked by an overly happy Voltorb, and even though it may have a friendly demeanor, it's electric shocks are dangerous, possibly even lethal to people, so it's understandable why they would want it out of their settlements
I'm a big fan of the new Voltorb, although honestly I never had a major issue with the old one. It's only Electrode that I think is super lazy, and I'm hoping we either get a new alternate evolution or a total design overhaul on Hisuian Electrode.
I think the second short with the berry sticking out of Voltorb's hole was a hint. Hisuian Electrode probably has a tree growing out of it. Like a bonsai with a round pot at the base.
An idea that I've seen is that hisuian electrode evolved to look like pokeballs since hisuian voltorb loves making friends which becomes easier when people come to you. People may have plugged its hole as it discharges electricity whenever its happy and it later evolved to keep that plug in and thus why its so angry and explosion-prone nowadays.
The question that needs to be answered, in that case, is WHY exactly it would evolve to have the hole on it's head be permanently plugged up. And I believe there are a couple of possible answers for this: 1) As it evolved to become less plant like over time, it no longer needed a way to disperse it's seeds, thus making the hole become obsolete 2) Because it's able to discharge electricity from the hole on it's head and not just seeds, maybe plugging that hole let it make more efficient use of said electricity? I mean, it tends to discharge it pretty easily when it's happy and excited, which makes it very prone to accidentally discharging it when it does want to
I figured it must be a species of tumbleweed, except instead of dropping the seeds as it tumbles, it just builds up energy then explodes, spreading spores/seeds everywhere
Apricon balls are completely natural, but we can still see them do the zap-and-shrink thing that modern manufactured Pokéballs do. I think the electricity can be simply explained as a natural property of apricorns as a whole, maybe even somehow tied to their seeds.
I don't really like the "Haunter is Voltorb" theory, because it's honestly kind of a flimsy one. It's mainly based around the fact that Voltorb has the same eye shape as Haunter, but the thing is, a lot of Gen1 Pokemon have a lot of shared design elements. In particular, a LOT o Gen1 Pokemon, including Rhydon, Charizard, and Blastoise, have the same shaped eyes too. It's not a sign that Voltorb and Haunter are one in the same; it's an artistic quirk on the part of the Gen1 art design team.
Ever since they revealed Hisuian Voltorb and not its evolution, I've been thinking Electrode's replacement might be very different from what we'd expect, like an actual tree or something.
I think if that's what they're going for, it'll probably be a totally new Pokemon that hasn't been seen before rather than a Hisuian version of Electrode. In fact, I think that at least one of the newly revealed Pokemon actually is such an example
I think that Voltorb is still an electric type mimic that just evolved to keep looking similar to the object that it wanted to imitate, adapting by switching the grass type for steel type when humans stop using apricorns as the most common material for the creation of pokeballs (so with the past of the time, it´s shell just hardened enough and ended up gaining the type eventually). The whole inspiration from seed bombs was pretty cool and accurate in my opinion.
It's more likely that when industrialization happened and the PokeBall changed to it's modern form Voltorb loses it's outer shell. Losing its electrical resister and is more irritable. There could be colonies of Hisuin Voltorbs as they are mentioned in the pokerap at the end credits of Horizons.
i saw voltorb and the grass/electric type and then the hole on its head reminded me of a cherry top when you pull out the stem. Makes me imagine them growing on a tree and falling off leaving the hole where the vine/stem/etc grew. I know that the pokemon breed but without ditto how would they breed? Especially if the theory that they are mew clones that failed is true XD
So thought. The fungus spores could land on a pokeball and still take hold. The electric typing could be from that and still keep the plant typing. And over time the fungus adapted to other types of pokeballs cause it was efficient.
In addition to being a literal "Seed Bomb", it could vert well also be based on the concept of "Explosive Dehiscence", a method of seed dispersal utilizing explosions. The most famous plant using this is the Sandbox Tree (AKA the Dynamite Tree), which is capable of sending it's seeds flying 100 meters every which way.
Saw a really dumb article last week that people playing Pokemon Go encountering Hisuian Electrode were confused by the hole on its bottom half, calling it a "booty hole"... Like, they never realized that Electrode is just a flipped over Voltorb... And Hisuian Voltorb has that exact hole in that exact location. Unobservant people are unobservant.
I never like or disike Voltorb,it was just there when i see it. I even sometimes try to put it on my team in some games and it help a lot. So when i found out Hisuian Voltorb and learn about it online, i grown to appreciated more (the same goes for all Pokemon, even the weaker ones aswell).
I think you might be confusing avocados for figs, because fig wasps are known for being involved in the pollination process for some species of figs but avocados are usually just pollinated the usual way with flowers
My currant headcanon: voltorb was the first to mimic apricorns as camouflage. Then, as humans realized this, they took a closer look at the apricorns, realizing that they could easily be hollowed out and carved into Voltorb's ball shape. Perhaps even noticing the unique attributes of each apricorn, eventually leading them to be made into poke balls. What I want to know is who figured out how to put a mini pocket dimension in a plant!
Sooo happy you did a video on this topic! I love the new voltorb design after seeing the little animations. Could not wait to hear your thoughts on it!
0:48 I mean they're still usually pretty chill if left alone. I mean one even let its trainer paint it like a watermelon (least one can only assume it was the voltorb's trainer because how the f-), that takes a considerable amount of chill I'd think.
Perhaps the seeds in Hissuian Voltorb out performs the various crop plants, leaving little to no nutrients for the farmed plants. This would explain why they are seen as nuisances. Think about it as if you were a farmer, how would you perceive an animal that brings in a plant that basically kills your winter harvest?
speaking of hisui, why is the diamond clan leader's symbol a pentagon? the natural shape for a diamond is a rhombus, or the diamond suit in a deck of cards, more like revive than anything else. apparently no natural crystals form in a pentagon, so maybe it's a weird pokemon universe only thing? especially when you take into account the "prism spheres" from the underground. idk where else to go with this but i thought i would let you know.
I think another inspiration might be exploding seed pods seen in a variety of plant species. Specifically though, the disgustingly named "Squirting Cucumber", which is a round/oval-ish pod with a *hole in the top* that forcibly ejects seeds when disturbed by even a slight vibration... Much like Voltorb's are known to do.
If Grimer is just toxic sludge that spontaneously came to life because of exposure to “x-rays from the moon” than I don’t see why Voltorb (both forms) can’t just literally be a living pokeball, no need for any of this possession or bug eggs going on, just that occasionally someone making the pokeballs f***s up and somehow you get a Voltorb
The seed ball theory is interesting, and not one I've heard of before. I thought perhaps H-Voltorb's connection to Japanese culture was urushi laquerware, seeing how the top red half resembles red lacquer, which is made of sap harvested from trees.
Because Hisuian people though Voltorb was annoying and were plugging it’s whole to prevent it from spreading it’s seeds, the ones who looked like Pokéballs could blend in and be skipped over. They evolved over time to start looking very much like Pokéballs. Later when new Pokéballs started looking different, they evolved to look like those too. Somewhere along the line, they all moved to Kanto as Voltorb today is noticeably absent from Sinnoh’s Pokédex. Once they moved to Kanto, they stopped spreading seeds altogether, perhaps the dramatic increase in fire type Pokémon in Kanto compared to Sinnoh/Hisui, was the environmental pressure needed for them to change. Now they’re only electric types. Just a theory from a guy who takes Pokémon lore to seriously! Reply if you see plot holes in this theory because Lord knows there probably are. Loved the video, Lockstin is the best!
I think we're going to see some kind electrically-charged plant in the region as a result of Voltorb throwing electric seeds everywhere (which, btw, electric seeds are an item in the games).
Not sure if this has already been said in this comment section, but it's entirely possible that Hisuian Voltorb went extinct and another species evolved to fill the niche later down the line. It also works for Haunters, having no more apricorn pokeballs to possess and as such start appearing in pokeball factories
the seed bomb inspo makes the most sense, but i also read a more darwinian theory that, just like other plant/fruit pokemon, voltorb's ancestors were camouflaged as all kinds of apricorns. But as apricorns became more rare, they started to evolve to look more and more like the apriballs that were being produced, or at least the apricorns that make "normal" pokeballs (as there would be more of them). And finally as apricorns became suuuper rare, they basically started to evolve in conjunction with pokeballs instead which were much more common :)
I doubt you’ll see this but if you do, do you think we’ll get a hisuian magikarp that’s actually strong like it’s dex entry’s always say “in the far past this Pokémon use to be very strong”
Could just be convergant evolution. When animals that are not related but look similar because they've evolved to fill similar niches. Eg Ichthyosaur, dolphin, n sharks. Voltorb, foongus (duh) and hisuian voltorb could all be different species just filling the niche of "looks like a pokeball".

...but what does the different levels of Pokeball mean? The Master Ball would have no purpose if they were just containers that Pokemon could just leave any time they wanted.
If catching rate was based on badges instead of type of ball, it would be a whole lot nicer, since it would imply that they are staying out of respect for your training ability. But it isn't, and it sounds a little sketchy.
(If you could explain the tiers of Pokeball in a way that is consistent with the notion that the Pokemon can leave, please tell me, I actually want to know if it can be explained in a realistic way while not being problematic.)
Trainers abusing their Pokemon literally could not happen if it was all by choice.
He's a Ball of Joy. Question solved.
Or he's just full of energy, explains the electric type
Speaking about seeds and explosion, that reminds me of balsam flowers whose fruits explode to spread their seeds out into the wild.
That's what came to mind when I first saw it's typing
I've seen two theory videos about Hisuian voltorb now and much to my surprise, neither have mentioned peat moss, which literally spreads its seeds by exploding.
Imagine if Hisuian Electrode is just an even bigger seed bomb or even just a big ol' berry.
That would make my day just knowing that.
I like the berry idea. Touche
I'm imagining a bonsai tree growing out of a round pot.
Strawberry Electrode?
Now the seeds are on the outside.
@@chasedownall6492 Doesn't the pokémon world have completely different berries then ours? Oran berry Electrode is where it's at!
@@rjs4176 Rawst Berries more like.
Speaking of the type combo, I had this idea for a Grass starter that would be Grass/Electric Beaver with the middle stage possibly being a the region's Pikachu clone (Though unlikely to happen in a real game).
hmm you know the time, and the region is a pretty good explanation on why some pokemon type combos are rare, such as animals in real life. or they just have no idea how to implement them
I lpve unique types like that, one of the main reasons why lanturn is both my favorite water and electric type mon
I don’t know much about legends are us because i want to skip the spoilers, but i know this fine round lad gotta be on the team.
Something they could also be based off of are exploding seedpods. Seedpods that just straight up blast their contents under extreme pressure.
And I believe there are a couple of possible answers for this:
1) As it evolved to become less plant like over time, it no longer needed a way to disperse it's seeds, thus making the hole become obsolete
2) Because it's able to discharge electricity from the hole on it's head and not just seeds, maybe plugging that hole let it make more efficient use of said electricity? I mean, it tends to discharge it pretty easily when it's happy and excited, which makes it very prone to accidentally discharging it when it does want to
You’ve become my favorite Pokémon UA-camr in the past few months leading up to PLA. I’m excited to track with you and enjoy your future content!
I never would’ve thought that I would want a voltorb on my team. Regional forms are the best!
I really hope they just give Voltorb a regional evolution instead of just Hisuian Electrode, like they did with Galarian Meowth and Perrserker.

This reminds me of your video on the berries where you try to poison yourself by eating fruits wrong
At least we know he's a happy little sphere
I figured it must be a species of tumbleweed, except instead of dropping the seeds as it tumbles, it just builds up energy then explodes, spreading spores/seeds everywhere
Apricon balls are completely natural, but we can still see them do the zap-and-shrink thing that modern manufactured Pokéballs do. I think the electricity can be simply explained as a natural property of apricorns as a whole, maybe even somehow tied to their seeds.
He couldve spared us from the knowledge of avocado wasps
But he chose violence
Am I the only one who imagined at the "kicking them out" part at the beginning that the people of Hisui _literally_ dropkicked them out? Anyone?...
The "possessed pokebal" theory is still the only one that works for both variants.
The seed is stored in the voltorb
I love learning with Lockstin. You have such a funny and interesting way of bringing new topics to me
I’m picturing Hisuian Voltorb spreading seeds like the littler forest spirits do in Totoro, rolling around in one straight line all clumsily ^^
Me eagerly waiting for him to finally start talking about the seed bombs and when he finally did he did not disappoint.
An absolute Lockstin moment
He was right. Electrode was infact pissed.
!!! The obligatory lockstin video ive been waiting for !!!
Especially if the theory that they are mew clones that failed is true XD
i literally just found out hisuian voltorb exists
its basically just a smiling voltorb. I'm happy they got rid of their anger issues
4:14 skip to here if the bugs eating the fruit is disgusting to you
Saw a really dumb article last week that people playing Pokemon Go encountering Hisuian Electrode were confused by the hole on its bottom half, calling it a "booty hole"... Like, they never realized that Electrode is just a flipped over Voltorb... And Hisuian Voltorb has that exact hole in that exact location. Unobservant people are unobservant.
this makes this pokemon as a concept make so much more sense, what a great video :D
Most species of figs, if only bc of how quickly figs speciate along with their fig wasp symbiotes
7:30 (ish) was that a Dark Cloud mimic? Man that takes me back.
It has now been confirmed that it's a pokemon ability that allows them to shrink. It's not caused by the pokeballs
Man I love the amount of brainstorming you do for your videos
2:32 Meanwhile in the Isle of Armor there is a kid with a rubbish machine that will rip you off in exchange for Apricorns.
There are some fruit, like the Ecballium, that literally "explode" when they're ripe to disperse their seeds as far and wide as possible.
What I want to know is who figured out how to put a mini pocket dimension in a plant!
y'know, Scyther could also be in the theory. The eyes of that pokemon when it's mad enough have the Eggexcute/Haunter/Voltorb eyes...
you were right about electrode it is pissed
3:28 erhem actually it’s fig wasps because figs are like inside out flowers 👆🤓
Now I’m imagining a Glameow using Hisuian Voltorb like a treat toy ball.
He's just a lil guy, I love him
Poketubers get deeper with theories than I previously thought possible for Pokemon. Love it.
Hello, here before the voltorb really goes boom
speaking of hisui, why is the diamond clan leader's symbol a pentagon? the natural shape for a diamond is a rhombus, or the diamond suit in a deck of cards, more like revive than anything else. apparently no natural crystals form in a pentagon, so maybe it's a weird pokemon universe only thing? especially when you take into account the "prism spheres" from the underground. idk where else to go with this but i thought i would let you know.
People tend to recognize the shape of a cut diamond as the gemstone far more than they do the shape, would be my guess as to why.
@@theforgottenscribe yeah but this dont even look like a cut diamond, the proportions are weird, this looks more like a bulbous house.
There's also those plants that spread their seeds by exploding after something touches them, like jewelweed!
My theory is Hisuian Voltorb is related more to the Foongus line
Quick idea for its ability: Scatter seed, when knocked out, this Pokémon scatters leach seeds on the opponent’s side
I loved this video, from the music, the theories and the end was a damn plot twist!
The thumbnail killed me. I am done. 🤣💀
I think we're going to see some kind electrically-charged plant in the region as a result of Voltorb throwing electric seeds everywhere (which, btw, electric seeds are an item in the games).
9:35
OMG I've been saying that idea for a while. I'm so glad someone else had the same thought.
Not sure if this has already been said in this comment section, but it's entirely possible that Hisuian Voltorb went extinct and another species evolved to fill the niche later down the line. It also works for Haunters, having no more apricorn pokeballs to possess and as such start appearing in pokeball factories

You are my favourite UA-camr
I remember watching the old video. Glad you added more energy in your new videos
4:28 hah that didn't age well lol
I hope electrode gets a grass-y beard
the seed bomb inspo makes the most sense, but i also read a more darwinian theory that, just like other plant/fruit pokemon, voltorb's ancestors were camouflaged as all kinds of apricorns.
Wondering if there is gonna be a Hisuian Electrode, or maybe another thing voltorb could evolve into.
I doubt you’ll see this but if you do, do you think we’ll get a hisuian magikarp that’s actually strong like it’s dex entry’s always say “in the far past this Pokémon use to be very strong”
the way you bit that avocado was the most unholy thing I've seen in a very long time
Every update I get more excited for this game
Amazing thumbnail XD
I can’t believe voltorb could get so deep
What if hisuian voltorb is already adapting and that's why it has the electric typing?
Could just be convergant evolution. When animals that are not related but look similar because they've evolved to fill similar niches. Eg Ichthyosaur, dolphin, n sharks. Voltorb, foongus (duh) and hisuian voltorb could all be different species just filling the niche of "looks like a pokeball".
I’m so glad that we get to watch an episode about Voltorb’s seed!
