    👉🏻 THE RAYY Fine Jewelry: computational caustic projection from the polished surface of a ring of white gold. Here the image of the word LIGHT is formed via a reflecting surface in a new process that utilizes the physics behind how light is concentrated into caustics, such as the bright interesting curves of light seen at the bottom of a pool. There are no letters engraved in the polished surface- instead the face of @therayy ring has a surface of slight but precisely calculated and constructed curves, designed to project a word chosen by the wearer when lit by a simple light source like the sun or a smartphone flash. This is not a hologram, but instead a new proprietary light redirection technology by the company RAYFORM. 🌟 Special thanks to @rayform technologies for sending me this new jewelry artform to review.

    👉🏻 Mickey Mouse Physics: Red, green, and blue LEDs switch on and off lighting the layers sequentially in a loop producing the animated scene from Star Wars. Disney + Lucasfilm = mouse ears of the future! (starwars, mickymouse, scienceisawesome)
    👉🏻 Vintage VFD Tube Clock: before seven segment LEDs there were Vacuum Fluorescent Display tubes in which zinc oxide coatings emit green light when bombarded by electrons under high vacuum. A phosphor coated anode segment only illuminates if it and the grid (seen in close up) are both energized at positive potential. This clock features an eight digit IV-18 display tube manufactured in the 1990s configured to be powered up with a USB cable- old tech meets modern electronics in an elegant acrylic case. (clock, nixietube, throwback, cathode)

    👉🏻 Dual Axis Sand Pendulum
    (pendulum, sand, sandpendulum)
    👉🏻 Reflective Wind Spinner: this one translates rotating motion into a repeating expanding square. An interesting one of many ways to connect rotational motion to translational motion.
    👉🏻 Magic Sun Stone: gem quality iolite shows very strong pleochroism- its color depends on the polarization of light as it is transmitted through the crystal.
    👉🏻 Reuleaux Rotor
    👉🏻 Spin Top Carousel
    (spinningtop, balance, neodymiummagnets)
    👉🏻 Fiber Optic Cactus Lamp: this vintage 1980s fiber optic lamp was found at a local thrift store- and it still works! The fiber bundle is illuminated by a lamp in the base and the color shifting patterns are generated by a rotating color wheel placed between the light source and the fiber optic bundle.)
    👉🏻 Orbit Spinning Top
    BONUS CLIP
    Unstable Equilibrium Pen Holder: the center of mass of pen + stand is directly above base of stand.

      This is even more impressive with lower resistance material. Either dip the copper in liquid nitrogen or if you can afford it, use a silver tube. The induced current is higher resulting in higher back emf. I made a "racetrack in plexiglass lined with magnets. Old pennies roll slowly while new pennies roll quickly. A drop track of magnets can be used to sort fake silver bullion as there is no substitute for silver that has as low an electrical resistance. All fakes fall faster down the chute. Due to lower density of most fakes, they are thicker for the weight and won't fit the test slot.

    • @civildiscourse2000
      @civildiscourse2000 4 роки тому +1

      Yep, that's a good summary. This is a demonstration of Lenz's Law, which states (loosely) that the direction of the induced magnetic flux opposes the direction of the applied magnetic flux. For demo you can do as well (better I think) with a couple feet of non-ferrous conductive pipe like common 1/2" copper plumbing pipe and a good ceramic disk magnet about 3/8" diameter. You might expect the disk to tumble but it floats right down the center of a vertically-held pipe at right angles to it. Best viewed from above.

    Both the left hand and right hand rules apply together. First the motion creates an electric field arround the copper like in a dynamo and then this generated electic field produces force in the opposite direction of the motion. This opposing force is not stong enough to oppose as energy is lost but enough to slow it down.

    The jumping disks are used in electrical applications for thermally-sensitive switching. For example they can be used to disconnect a load in case of overheating (so-called "high limit"). They are also used in a form of time delay relay called a sequencer. This is a common furnace part used to turn on heating elements and control the fan in a timed sequence. Imprecise, cheap and the most common cause of failure, they are being phased out. Maybe jumping is a better application.

    the magnet is in a constant state of magnetism to all edges. trying to pull the whole thing closer to its self equally on all sides of the tube. cause the descent to slow down.

    • @krupert8355
      @krupert8355 4 роки тому +1

      @Alexander Allen You both are pretty close. As the magnet moves past a conductor (like wire, or in this case copper tube) it creates an electrical current, that in turn creates a magnetic field which interacts with the magnet. It's making a feedback loop, the more the magnet moves, the more electricity within the conductor, the more magnetic field, the more it slows down the magnet. So the magnet will never stay still, nor will it fall too fast, it will find it's rate that it finds stable to drop.

    Law of induction. Moving magnet induces current in copper and this current produces field opposing magnets field and in consequence slowing magnets movement.

  • @timehunter9467
    @timehunter9467 4 роки тому +1

    The reason the magnet slows is because of eddy currents. Magnets moving past copper makes electrons move, physics doesn’t like it so it tries to stop motion. Electroboom goes into detail about it in one of his videos, very clever man.

    I'm going to say Lentz' law, which describes the eddy currents created by the magnet as it falls, which, in turn induce magnetic drag on the magnet; bearing in mind that it is not the copper doing the repelling, but the electrical field which is induced in it. P.S. Minor correction. It's Lenz', without the "t".

    The strong magnet's magnetic field, creates a magnetic 'flux' through the copper tube, which varies with time due to the motion of the magnet.This varying magnetic flux creates an induced potential difference(also called as an electromotive force) in the copper(a para-magnetic material) tube. The induced potential difference has a polarity that opposes the initial changing magnetic field, the opposition happens to agree with the conservation of energy. The negative of the first derivative of magnetic flux with respect to time gives the magnitude of the induced potential difference. Also called as LENZ'S LAW. There you go.You're welcome.

    The magnetic eddy currents inside the copper pipe have a reverse magnetic field that doesn't last very long and is created by the magnet falling through the pipe. Or the magnet creates electricity in the copper pipe and the electricity creates a magnetic field that is rotated by 180° or 90° spin on the electricity and again 90° on the magnetic field at the end so it is the magnetic field that slows the magnet fall speed.

    I think I might've seen a pure in real life, but a looney physicist grabbed it and ran off before I could be sure.
    If it was anything like these marvelous toys, I missed something really interesting!

    The two disc in the previous quiz are like the disc in electric water heaters. They pop outward disconnecting the current when the water gets too hot.

    The magnet will Induced an electric current in the copper tube, thus becoming a magnetic field, resulting in a slower than normal fall while within the copper tube.

      The created magnetic feild, caused by the magnets lines of force are in the opposing direction, thus causing the resistance I think.

    Answer: The magnet while passing through copper tube makes electrons in the copper start to move in one direction, but as the magnet falls, they start to go the other direction which makes an electromagnetic field that tries to stop the magnet, but gravity always finds a way of wining.

    The neodymium magnet as it flows through the copper tube generates an eddy current due to which it attracts to it and thus increases normal reaction along with friction. The imp. thing is the electric field generated is a non conservative field. Its curl is non-zero meaning the current flows in closed loop . The potential difference is undefined as there is no conservative field.

    Eddy currents is why the copper tube can slow the magnetic ball down. Same technology is used in roller coasters for their brakes.
