So this is why some of my keys occasionally don't strike and most of my keys feel loose. Like the hammer should be striking a little faster. I can tell now it's the bridle straps. I might need to buy some soon!
I heard that it's better to use cork or regular besides the clips. I was told the clips do make a little noise and are better for quick repairs only. This is just what I've heard. Take from it what you will.
Thank you for this, and many other great videos. I really enjoy them. One topic I can't find though: How to correctly adjust the bridle straps. Do you have such a video?
I have a very old upright piano and the bridle strap is broken. The old strap is glued in to a cork. How do i remove the glued bridle wire and dismantle the glued cork.
My old upright has standard bridle straps; only one is broken. I could replace just the one, or the whole set, but.....would you advise to replace with standard ones, or can I change them all over to clip on ones? Thank you.
You probably dont care but if you guys are bored like me atm you can watch pretty much all the new movies on InstaFlixxer. I've been streaming with my gf during the lockdown :)
Just had our old 'Mason and Risch' Canadian made piano apart for cleaning. While I was putting the action back I noticed one note mechanism was not sitting correctly. I noticed a broken strap and jury rigged a piece of plastic twine to go in it's place. The piano is now working fine, but I realize it's a very temporary repair. Those clip on straps look like a great solution.
Hello howard, i have a question, in my upright i have the old standard style straps with the hole, if i replace them with the cork style ones, is it an exact match in size? I have a 1960s everett upright.... Thanks
You can only replace the old bridle straps with the cork style if you have the hole for the cork underneath the catcher, which not all pianos have. You may be better off using the clip on style bridle straps which I demonstrate in this video.
+howardpianoind okay thank you. I have the holes for the cork which is 1/4 dia. Would you reccomend cork over clip on or clip over cork. Thanks again. I'm looking to replace these soon and will be buying off your website for sure, i love your proffesionalism.
Hello, first, a very informative and well done video. I have a friend with a Kimble Piano Model # 3797 SN# S46054 that needs at least one bridal strap replaced. Do you know if it is necessary to remove the entire action to be able to replace this strap (middle G) ? I've never done this before, but I have tuned pianos for years for friends and I'm mechanically wired by my maker. My friend nor myself are millionaires to pay someone to do this, but will do so if we have to. Thank you. If you can help or not, I still like your video! If I could find a manual for this piano (don't know if there is such a thing), that could be a great help. Thanks.
Hi @dekelsey1 did you manage to do this repair with the action still in the piano ? I have a couple which I need to fix. I'm thinking a tiny dot of superglue might make it feasible to stick it onto the hammer butt. My piano is nothing fancy at all and my playing is not good enough to notice an imperfect fix, but the B key two octaves above middle C is sticking.
The new bridle straps I bought from you seem a little hard to put on. Is that normal? Or are there different sizes in the leather? What's a good way to go about this? Thank you!
You could try that. I haven't ever run into this problem. You also want to make sure that the strap is pulled far enough into the bridle wire. If it's too tight it will be at a strange angle and will have trouble hooking on.
My Pierce Piano Atlas shows 1908-1915, I don't see a breakdown for exact year based on serial# maybe something more exact if you Goggle it. The Pierce Piano Atlas says Jepson Piano Co. And A. L. Jensen 209-211 Walnut St. Des Moines Iowa Years 1908-1915
Why not just buy bridal straps with corks already glued on? What is this "Hot Hide glue? I bought hide glue and it says nothing about being heated and it works fine out of the bottle
The clip on straps aren't holding on the hammer shank tightly, (slipping) on my 70's Wurlitzer upright because the shank is thinner ( I guess ) than normal so I'm using glue after clipping.
Thanks, as always, your video-clips are very informative and useful. Keep up the good work
Excellent explanation . Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Very well explained. Much appreciated!
All the best

Do you have a name for the tool that moves the clip up and down so you don't need to remove the action?
That is the Clip On Bridle Strap Inserter, available here: www.howardpianoindustries.com/clip-on-piano-bridle-strap-inserter/
Thank you for this, and many other great videos. I really enjoy them. One topic I can't find though: How to correctly adjust the bridle straps. Do you have such a video?
We don’t have a video on adjusting the bridle straps, but you can adjust them by bending the bridle wire forward or backward.
I understand that, but how do I know which way to adjust?
You want to adjust it so it has enough slack that when you press down the left pedal the straps don't lift the whippens.
I have a very old upright piano and the bridle strap is broken. The old strap is glued in to a cork. How do i remove the glued bridle wire and dismantle the glued cork.
The cork should be able to come out of the hole so you can put in a new cork bridle strap.
I've got a broken strap. Do I have to remove the whole assembly?
You should be able to replace the strap without removing the action.
My old upright has standard bridle straps; only one is broken. I could replace just the one, or the whole set, but.....would you advise to replace with standard ones, or can I change them all over to clip on ones? Thank you.
The clip on are much easier. The standard ones are a lot more work. It’s usually best to replace all of them.
Thank you sir! This is exactly what I am looking for

@Knox Jeffrey definitely, I have been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
I'm trying to find somewhere to buy bridal straps from with no luck. Any ideas??????

I measure the strap while on and i get about 3 1/4 long from the glued side to the tip of the leather

If your piano has the holes for the cork strap, they are probably a little easier to install. Either one would work well though.
+howardpianoind ok thanks

Is it the leather tab that you're having trouble pushing onto the bridle wire?
Yes it is. Do i bend the hook of the bridle wire back a slight bit?
You could try that. I haven't ever run into this problem. You also want to make sure that the strap is pulled far enough into the bridle wire. If it's too tight it will be at a strange angle and will have trouble hooking on.
Once it's on there it's fine, it's just the leather was too thick to wrap around the spiral part. Bending the hook out a little bit did the trick!
sir could you help me to find out how old my piano is a.l.jepson mfg co des-moines iowa 10638 and 638 thank you for your time sir .

I have an old Horugel that needs new bridal straps... how much would I pay in materials for a job like this?
Hi Luke,
A set of bridle straps is around $23.
This can happen with some pianos. The solution is squeeze the clip together a little.
Thanks for the reply Steve. I've found that squeezing doesn't hold it in place well enough. I'm resorting to a bit of Elmers also.
This is american system action upright piano.
