    Nasty, the videos were great, really curious if it blew because of using the old pistons and rings? I think I would of replaced them and honed or bored while having it tore down all the way. I just picked up an 88 550 to ride again. Had a new one in 85 for a few years but sold it to buy a dump truck and start a landscaping business. Sold the business and retired and now it’s time to ride again. Thanks for posting the videos, there informative and very helpful, have a great day and I hope it didn’t tear up to much of that motor.

      Thank you! It could have been the old pistons for sure. I would’ve got new ones and a hone but I figured I would give it a shot. That’s awesome that you’re still ripping!

      My current 550 will run well in the water now that I’ve tuned the carb, however when I put the engine cover back on it bogs down and quits?? There may be an exhaust leak but the cover air holes are clear. Any suggestions?

    im about to do a complete teardown & rebuild of an 89' JS 550 that has been in storage for 20+ years. did you buy the entire gasket and seal kit on amazon? what about other parts (piston rings?, etc...)?

    • @NastyMoto
      @NastyMoto  3 роки тому

      I bought all of the seals and everything from amazon, as far as top end kits I would probably go vintage jet ski

    Hey Nasty, if you read this comment I have the complete servicing manual for your Honda ATC 70 since I'm also rebuilding a couple.I thought I could maybe help you rebuilding yours by giving you the manual.
    It's basically just a PDF scan of the original so if you want it just reply to this comment and we'll find a way.
    Keep the good work.

    Did you hop in the cold water and just rip on the ski without warming it up for a while? If you are in cold water and you get on it right away then you could have cold siezed the top end. The piston heats up fast and the cylinders are cold from the cold water so the piston basically swells up and grows too quickly and sticks itself inside the cylinder. Typically in a top end seizure due to overheating or leaning out you will see scuffs on the exhaust and intake sides of the pistons. In a cold seizure you will notice the scuffs on the wrist pin sides of the pistons. Also Pack your seals with assembly goo or a thick marine grease and make sure you have the seals facing the correct way. And you are right cut down on the gasket sealant. Your crankcase can get filled with little bits of that crap and block passages that need oiling and also get stuck inside beatings and heat them up. A lot of red flags with this build. If you are going to tear down an Engine all the way to the cases why would you throw used pistons and rings back inside? Scratched up used parts and sticky scuffed up rings out back in an unhoned cylinder will be sure to heat right back up and seize right away. That isn’t a rebuild. That is just a reassembly! Lol also make sure you are putting the pistons on the correct way. If you have them flipped 180 degrees you can have issues for sure. Also anything that has a gasket does not need any sealant. Be honest. How hard was it to separate that cylinder head and head gasket from that cylinder jug! Lol I get that you want to do it as cheap as possible but, like I said, to be tearing the engine all the way down to the cases, you really should be having the cylinders done at a machine shop and have them machined to match the new pistons you buy. Think about it! You can buy a bigger set of pistons and have the sleeves bored and honed to match and not only will the build last and be done correctly but it will have much snappier performance with the larger bore size. To be honest though, I think you should check out a channel called Erickson Machine and Performance on UA-cam. He has videos of Kawasaki 550 rebuilds. You could also contact him to do your top end machining and get you the right parts.

    Check your seals!!! The front one always goes bad the back is a double seal and it rarely goes. When you put new seals in rembember to pack them with good marine grease!

    RIP 550, maybe sand got in mixed in with the water when you hydrolocked it?
