My "one-lens" kit for general every day photography is the Nikkor 24-120 f4. Excellent quality, versatile, not too bulky; covers many situations. This differs for my "street" setup, which generally involves a compact "muffin style" prime lens.
I got my 24-120 the day that Nikon released it to go with my Z9 as my first Z mount lens. I would estimate that I use it about 65% of the time. Last month I used 14 different lens combinations, so I have lots of choice. The 24-124 currently lives on my Z8 and only comes off when I need the Z8 for something else. Great video Zack.
My edc and travel kit are one and the same. A Z6ii, 24-120mm f4, 28mm and a 40mm. If I had to choose compact and low profile then the 28mm would win for the most versatile.

Still building out my Z lens bag. I have the 24-120 but actually enjoy shooting the 50mm MC f/2.8 as it makes the Z9 a bit more compact. If I am walking about I can quickly use the macro feature of that lens while still having some low light capability. If it is serious macro I switch to the Z 105 f/2.8 macro. I am anxious to try the 28-400 as a walk about lens. With my D850 I used the venerable 28-300 but it wasn't as sharp as the holy trinity of lenses. Hoping the 28-400 is a tad sharper but doubtful.
Well it’s usually my OM5 with 17mm (equivalent 35mm) 1.2 lens. Small and fast package. But my local camera store bought my horrible, horrible Nikon 40mm f2 lens for $200 and gave me a $100 instant rebate for the Nikon 26mm 2.8 which made it a sweet $200. And I’m really liking that lens on my ZF. I can see that as an everyday carry.
Funny....... It's either the 40mm f2 or the 24 - 120 f4 I don't mind either even though there's a huge difference. I own the 50mm f 1.8 which technically is better than the 40mm f2 but I just like the 40 mm f2

In the field not being in a studio, isn’t the versatility of zoom more important for making compositionally appealing images rather than having the sharpest lens in hand? What are your thoughts?
Based on the foundation of this video, if you’re the one that is just capturing memories, yes zoom it. If you’re the kind that might have an actual interest in photography, I revert to my long time basic advice of everyone’s first lens that they buy is a 50 f1.8. I think a prime teaches you to seek the composition rather than letting a zoom keep you from moving around for it

I’m surprised you didn’t like the 40. The 26 isn’t getting the attention it deserves. Great saturation on that thing 🤙

40mm is an underrated focal length in modern times. Used to be much more common
