Are the mantles they make, today still got toxins in or have they made them safer to use cause I see people using them in tents as lighting I've got a, few campingaz lamps and tilley lamps too that I want to use but was wondering if the mantals have changed to become more safer unless they was already safe in the fist place but they are really good lamps

Michael Ryan yesh its really good and bright alternative to batterie lights. It also gives out heat . Don’t forget it’s a big and bulky for trekking with but a stationary location very good.

So would this be the same idea of how old sutt lamps works on bicycles from the early 20th century?

Will Coleman Mantle #51 fit because it's more cheaper than the other mantel brand

I don’t know . I see generic ones really cheap. They are so cheap you might as well test it and find out. But these are only £2 each

Perhaps it would be useful to explain what a failed mantle looks like and what damage using a failed mantle can do to your lamp. Also it’s important to stress the point that mantles contain Thorium which is radioactive. The burning in process should be done outdoors and the smoke should never be inhaled. Also wash your hands after handling the mantle (especially the expired mantle). Ingesting Thorium after handling a mantle and preparing food is bad for obvious reasons.
    Good video otherwise, thanks!

Primus Mantles as I used in the video are Throrium free ;-) so nothing to worry about. Neither do other large manufacturers like Coleman or Petromax contain Thorium. So long as you buy a name brand mantle from a reputable store it is highly unlikely that you will be getting a Thorium mantle these days. If in doubt buy from Primus, Coleman or Petromax where they state Thorium free on the packaging. Since the dangers of Thorium became well known in the 1990s it is commonly not used.

@@verysurvival Many of the major manufacturers changed from Thorium to Yttrium or zirconium in their manufacturing process. Unfortunately, Both compounds are carcinogenic and are also harmful if ingested or inhaled. Same safety points are just as valid. Also bear in mind that the vast majority of mantles produced and sold worldwide (including the US) still contain Thorium.

@@verysurvival Not really, just google it. I’m not attacking your video, I enjoyed it and found it helpful! I just think people should be aware of potential hazards so they can take appropriate precautions when handling hazardous substances 👍
