- The Continental Tire Road Race Showcase (formerly the Road America 500) is a sports car race held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The event began in 1950, and in 1951 was added to the SCCA National Sports Car Championship. Following a spectator death at the 1952 Watkins Glen Grand Prix, racing on open roads was discouraged, and the race went into hiatus until 1955, when a permanent circuit was opened. In 1963, the race shifted to the new United States Road Racing Championship.
This was a big event for Carroll Shelby's new Cobra and his cars scored a 2nd place, fourth and 6th place finish.

So much racing history here. Roger Penske, Bob Holbert, Carol Shelby
I worked for Bob Holbert from 1990-2005 he was a gentleman of highest order and to see him in action is a thrill
I was there. My first year at RA was 1958. They even had a NASCAR race back then . Almost every car went of course on every sharp corner. There were no extra room on corner exits. If you got off the tarmac you were in dirt.. Great fun.
Great quality! Looks like it was shot in the 80s at least!
Corvettes, Ferraris, and Porches aside, the other beauties like the Sadlers, Scarabs, Coopers, Elvas, Listers, and Chaparrals stand as testament to the workmanship of yesteryear, when cubic inches were key.
R. C. R. The exotic’s were gorgeous, the Can-Am cars too, Lola, Chapparal , Mcclaren, Chevron etc.
You can still see all the Chaparals on display at the Petroleum museum in Midland
Texas.
King rose you always Rock:::
Look at Roger Penske!
unique in all You Tube & maybe in racing history - the pace car is a Corvair
@8:02 check out the trick asymmetrical front body work on the blue #1 (Chaparral?)
Looks like something right out of Big Daddy Ed Roth's custom shop!
11:54 ... they're still out there trying to get that extinguisher to work.
Wow, look at Road America what's not even hay bales or anyting.
The pace car is a Corvair.
