When you don't know what to order - call the lab and ask. We do know lab tests better than you do. And if you just order everything, we will 1) know that you don't know what you're doing and 2) reject half your tests anyway because they're not appropriate for the specimen you collected. So ask us. We will appreciate you for it.

Eric is so right! These tips are right to the point and very valuable - especially the pointer to watch out for depression! I wish I had know this before I started my internship as I could have avoided a lot of heartache. Make sure you know the classic signs of anxiety and depression, and GET YOURSELF TREATED as soon as you start experiencing them - in particular, poor memory or cognition, blurred vision, muscle twitching, etc. Any additional stressors in your personal life, on top of starting an internship, can easily be enough to send even the most resilient person into a deep depression. The worst part of depression is that often to afflicted party has no idea they are becoming clinically depressed! They are just trying to cope as best they can, yet struggling with debilitating symptoms that prevent them from being successful.
I worked with doctors who didn't recognize my symptoms as symptoms, and had zero compassion when they later found out. For those who are supervising others, please watch out for the hallmark symptoms, and be compassionate to your interns. Help them recognize their symptoms if you see a pattern developing.
Trust me - after you get treatment, you will be your old sharp self again. It's OK to ask for help, but even more importantly, it's OK to not be on top of your game and not even know it. Make sure you have a good support system with compassionate people who will be honest yet caring with you.
Most important tip - if you find yourself working with callous, uncaring, dismissive or uncompassionate doctors... do everything you can to get out of that toxic environment. "Trying harder" isn't always an option.

I've always taken my patient history standing up; sitting instead of standing is a great tip, i will definitely try it out. Thanks for the helpful video.

This is absolutely the best video I have seen yet for educating doctors (or any provider) to be the best to care for their patients. I know many doctors who have been practicing over 20 years who do not follow these recommendations. In a world of a medical and mental health system that is dysfunctional at best, these recommendations are important to maintain your Hippocratic Oath and ethical codes. To truly be an excellent doctor, it is much more than knowing procedures or basic knowledge. I can't say enough how important this video is for all medical and mental health providers to listen to and embrace this style of care for their patients! Thank you!!

    Dear Eric,
thank you very much for your great tips. Especially #11 is very important to be recalled in our daily routine.
Is it possible for you to do a video on how to be a good teacher if you are in the position of a senior physician?
    Keep up your great work!

My tip is when confering with more senior doctors, summarize as best you can AND present them with what you plan on doing, if you have some notion of what to do. This is better than just asking, what to do.

    Hello Dr. Strong,
Will it be possible to do a segment about choosing a residency? maybe a few general words , even on some of the options will help a lot...nothing like experience to help guide us through all the options..
Many thanks on the vids !

Great tips to interns ... thanks. I may add - 1 - to introduce first by saying ... hello ... I am (name) ... and (job description) ... before interviewing, and 2 - avoid jargon ... keep it simple to avoid misunderstanding. Thanks.

Respected Sir.,Kindly get a topic on seizure and its management. .

    • @StrongMed
      @StrongMed  8 років тому +1

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm not a neurologist, and don't personally encounter seizure disorders very often in my practice. Seizures are on our "long-list" of topics to cover (in contrast to the "short-list"), which means that we absolutely intend to get to it at some point, but there is no estimate of when it might be, and will likely be beyond a year. I'm sorry, but we just get too many requests to keep up with them all in a timely manner.

I know things have slowed down a bit over the past couple of months. I work on several videos overlapping - the main current project is a collection of 5 more advanced EKG videos. I also had a video on cognitive bias which was virtually "in the can", but I was unsatisfied with it, so reworking the script and reshooting. And also working on a practical video on blood pressure measurement. You should see all of these out by the end of the summer.
