    “Extremely unique”..... I mean tech 21 already did the dug pedal and the dark glass website says the idea is an old recording technique.... still sounds great

    • @drphalanges1520

      It's unique to have it in a small pedal. It is an old recording technique but it took a lot more to achieve it than stepping on a footswitch. It's different from the dUg pedal because you can select your crossover frequencies. So it is unique.

    Always enjoy the creations Doug and his team put out. What's anyone's opinion on this lacking a blend knob? That's one particular element that gravitates me towards Darkglass products is the blend functionality. Can that be achieved somewhat from tasteful mixing of the low comp and high level/drive? Thanks for the demo Patrick,
    great job as always appreciate your time and effort.

    Great stuff Patrick, quality demo and review as usual. The inclusion of HP and LP filters is just the icing on top, they act to really tighten and focus things. Another genius offering from our Darkglass friends in Finland.

    This is really weird, even with very good headphones, every setting, every bass and every distortion sounds the same ... And not only here with this pedal !
    I suspect UA-cam upload lowers bass sound quality, which sounds flat and undefined in the end ...

    • @martinheath5947
      @martinheath5947 6 років тому +3

      I agree! Apart from added lows according to instrument used, exactly same fizz all the time until you dial it out a bit. Obviously a "go to" fizz for some bassists

    Hey Patrick, if someone were to run this as an always on pedal, do you think the low comp is sufficient compression enough for the overall signal, or if someone has a compression pedal they like should they plan on using both?

    IS THIS AN ALPHA OMEGA? CHECKing OUT THE COMMENTS BELOW. I commented previously that this is getting more and more cloudy differentiating the variations in the pedals that DG is making. I am an Alpha O owner and yea I really like the pedal but cmon. Can you help us?

      Lol, I made the X-men reference on there. I think I still like the Alpha-Omega better. I plan on using the regular X to make things brighter and harsher. Like a better B3K, which is how I see this pedal. My other favorite is the Tech21 Oxford, which sounds warm and has a lot of grunt. Maybe Orange's new pedal will replace that one. What do you guys use?? The low gain parts around 8:20 sound nice, though.

    • @codyhansonbass
      @codyhansonbass 6 років тому

      I mean, I dont disagree that a lot of their pedals sound similar, but who cares? Just dont buy it if you dont want it. But honestly in a band mix you probably wouldnt hear much of a difference between them.

    • @AlexhPDX
      @AlexhPDX 6 років тому +3

      I used to love Darkglass but everything they've put out recently has been a rehash or a money grab. I'd like to see them use some of the innovative ideas the company started with and come up with something new that isn't a distortion. Another thing is the Darkglass distortion sound is so overused in metal recordings nowadays that its gotten boring for me to hear it on records... I miss the sound of a real bass amp mic'd up

    • @ThelowEE
      @ThelowEE 6 років тому +3

      That's because of 2 (I think) factors:
      1- He (or the pedal) scoops the shit of those mids;
      2- The effected signal is blended way too high leaving no space for the actual sound of the instrument;
      Or a combination of these.

    This is probably the best overdrive pedal I've heard so far because for me it's more of a grit than it is Distortion or fuzz, I bought the boss ODB 3 and I was pretty disappointed with the type of distortion it gets its really fizzy but what I like is that it keeps the low end but I'm looking for more of a grit sound than I am Distortion or fuzz and this pedal hit the spot perfectly but I'm pretty sure the price doesn't hit the spot

    • @barrymurray7683
      @barrymurray7683 5 років тому

      I use my odb3 as a boost for my clean sound now. I have the gain set to 1 o clock and have the blend dialled to just where the overdrive effect is about to kick in. The EQ on the odb3 is great I think. But yeah, the X7, money damn well spent!

  • @jimrubelbassplayer

    I enjoy how the Darkglass pedals sound. This one sounds as good as all the others. But I've only ever heard them in controlled recorded context. I'm primarily a live player so I wonder if in a live environment when you're trying to hear yourself on stage as well as pop through the mix if your sound just disappears..? I'd love to hear a front of house video using a Darkglass pedal but have yet to find one.

    • @ChaseDougie
      @ChaseDougie 6 років тому +2

      If you set the pedal right it will absolutely cut through. Generally finding the sweet spot in the upper mid range is key since a lot of the time finding a spot above the guitars frequency wise is what makes you cut in a mix with guitars.

    • @Patrick-fv6yh

      Everyband Ive seen live who uses some sort of DG I can hear the bass clearly and it sound amazing. Then I never got a chance to use mine live but when I was jamming with a full band for a short time I ran direct and was able to cut through and it sounded great

      I used a B7K ultra in a band I was in for about 35 shows. I always got compliments on how clear and articulate my bass sounded in the mix from audience members after we would finish our set. Finding the right spot for the blend knob is what really matters as far as cutting through the mix.

  • @shaft9000
    @shaft9000 5 років тому

    i appreciate the effort, although no sensible mix engineer would mix bass in a song like this
    a more comprehensive demo should have a) how it affects the input and output signal when set at different levels, and b) how well it still sounds when rolling off highs. this is fundamental.
