I went to a woodcarver meeting for the first time. Everyone was talking Doug this and Doug that. I said who is Doug? Doug Linker, they said. I told them I watch you on UA-cam all the time. You've got quite a fan base.
For those of us who can't find Doug's Terra Nova NaturOil where you live, from what i can work out based on the clear colour and label, i think white food grade mineral oil used on butchers blocks or cutting boards etc should do the same trick. 🙂
something about your style i just love. your videos are what got me into carving. wish i could show you the drastic improvement from my 1st to the 2nd.
Great painting tutorial Doug! Because I don't like the smell of the boiled linseed oil and it's risk involved, I have been using transparent cuttingboard oil, from IKEA. It works for me. Great idea with the ice pick and the whiskers!!
Love the wooden marionette on the top shelf, at least that's what it looks like. If you had all your wood carvings on DVD I would buy them , I'm having so much fun wood carving. 🌻
Doug I used linseed oil for years but really didn’t like using it. This oil you have now I find best kind. I’ve been using it for 3-4 yrs and it’s perfect to use before painting in my opinion
I wanted to try something different, so I ordered 8oz of the Terra Nova. It just came yesterday right after I had completed my first Hobo Pumkin so I will wait to use it on my next piece. Thank you for the tip Kevin and Doug.
I too am constantly trying new things and learning from other carvers. I enjoy the painting as much as the carving. Comparing my early painting to what I do today is like day and night. Experience is a great teacher! Another great video Doug.
You make this look so easy that it makes me want to start carving again however I've lost most of the feeling and use of one hand and haven't figured out how I can do it but if I can I will be giving another go at it. Thanks to your videos and thanks for showing the tips on painting the carvings.
Great info with the painting video Doug, thanks for sharing as you update your techniques . Its great to change things up a bit I think, have a blessed weekend
Hey doug. Enjoy your videos! I have been useing the tera nova naturoil for a couple years. Not sticky or stinky like linseed👍food grade Need a couple coats tho.. And then a couple more coats😎
Brilliant, thank you for that, especially the shadowing. Any chance of helping us with what to use to soften wood for carving, please? Everyone keeps being jealous of you as it looks like you're carving butter!
Hey Doug, I know you probably wont answer this question and I might have to wait for the next "Live w/Doug + Sophie", but isn't the Terra Nova NaturOil essentially food grade mineral oil? I just picked up a bottle of Howard Cutting Board oil, who also makes the Howard Feed-N-Wax. It was $10.97 (US dollars) for a 12 oz. bottle on eBay. It says on the bottle that it is food grade mineral oil enriched with vitamin E. This would be the same as the Terra Nova stuff, eh?
I'm a watercolour and oil painter, I'm just about to start the wood carving journey, albeit with a Swiss Army knife to begin with. What paint are you using? Is ir acryllic?
I don’t care for BLO and this natur oil doesn’t seem to readily available where it m at. Just wondering if you ever tried just mineral oil as a base? Or if there’s a reason it shouldn’t be used.

Great idea with the ice pick and the whiskers!!
most cutting board oil is mineral oil which you can buy cheaper at a drugstore (used as a laxative)
Thanks 👍

Outstanding! Very nice painting! I agree with the shiny paint, I now only buy matte craft paints!
Great video and project Doug. Thanks for taking the time to show us how you make your carvings look so good.
You da man!!!!!!!👍
Clever way of shadowing thanks doug 😊

Very enjoyable video, it's great to see how to paint and finish a figure as it certainly makes a difference to the end product.
Thank you! I use your paint techniques on my hand poured and painted concrete pieces.
Thank you Doug.
Well done Doug......enjoyed very much
Very interestiVery interesting ! I love raw wood, but with color, it gives much more character!
Great tips Doug. Will be looking for some of the products mentioned.
Keep them coming!
Thank you! Great videos!
He really is the Bob Ross of carving.
Doug, appreciate the painting content very much. Just getting into carving myself, started with your 📚 idea. Haven't tried painting yet but will soon.
Well done. I enjoyed listening to you and learning. When u mentioned JD name I thought " I know him" lol. Ty
Doug, I see Howard’s makes a cutting board oil, was wondering if had tried that. Thanks for the painting video.
very neat like it a lot
I just got and 1984 Honda goldwing. I can't wait to take a road trip to Erie and carve by the lake then ride home
I use the Howard wax love it

And then a couple more coats😎

Thanks Doug, you are an inspiration. do you have any tips on "speeding up" the carving process? thanks again for all your tutorials.
Have you tried Mineral Oil? I believe it will remain clear and it is less expensive.
👍👍👍
Not boring at all, always good to relearn old things anew.
The ring light magnifying set up do you use it for carving?
'the storm is over. there was no hail.'---
Omg. my OCD thanks you! #closure
Curious as to how much burnt umber oil tube paint you add to how much BLO. Thank you

Definately should be safe to try as long as there is no wax it may be good
@@dougLinker now I feel special that you answered me! LOL! Yup, no wax in it. Thanks Doug!
Do you know where to get good quality carving tools, like V-tools, that are not overly expensive?
could I just use any kinda oil? or does it have to be a specific kind or quality?
Doug have you tried Walnut Oil?
Can you list the colors of paints you use when you get a chance. Thanks
I'm a watercolour and oil painter, I'm just about to start the wood carving journey, albeit with a Swiss Army knife to begin with. What paint are you using? Is ir acryllic?
Yes just craft store acrylics
@@dougLinker Roger that. Thanks.
Have you tired tinting the Naturoil?
I don’t care for BLO and this natur oil doesn’t seem to readily available where it m at. Just wondering if you ever tried just mineral oil as a base? Or if there’s a reason it shouldn’t be used.
definitely a striking resemblance to a certain former US president 💚🇬🇧🌱 is he a hobo now? That would be 🤣😂🤣😂
Is olive oil works?
Didn’t he used to be the British PM?
Can one use Beeswax in place of oil?
Noooooooo! Don’t do it -you can never paint over a wax
Yeah Kevin coats is a brilliant carver , but you can't send him coffee.
These guys remind me of the orange monster troubling American democracy at the moment.
Thanks!
thank-you very much!! appreciate it
