- Attention isn't just about what we focus on -- it's also about what our brains filter out. By investigating patterns in the brain as people try to focus, computational neuroscientist Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar hopes to build computer models that can be used to treat ADHD and help those who have lost the ability to communicate. Hear more about this exciting science in this brief, fascinating talk.

I didn't hear a word he just said but I was paying CLOSE attention to him!
I am so poor that i can't even afford to pay attention.
poor? me too
Pffft...We were so poor growing up, if I didn't wake up with an erection on Christmas, I didn't have anything to play with!
daddydojang was it fun growing up rich?! i was so poor, i didnt even have enough blood in my body to get an erection
jajajaja, so do I!!
But u have a rich sense of humour
That is why I meditate! Daily meditation has greatly improved my ability to concentrate, and I feel much better now.
Charles how exactly do you meditate?
Sit in a quiet area and try to relax yourself as much as possible. It's the act of doing (almost) absolutely nothing, which turns out to be pretty difficult at first. As you sit still for a while, thoughts will start appearing and you just have to let them be and focus on a single thing, such as a word of your choosing. I've found in my own limited experience that fighting the random thoughts just stresses you out more.
Really? I've been told countless times to just brush the toughts off, i find that hard
I mean it is kind of the same thing. To brush something off is to not give it much attention, I think. You just try not to focus on them and instead focus on whatever word or specific thing you've decided to use to keep yourself focused. Like choosing to walk down a single path instead of running up, down, and across it, or into other paths.
+Unkown0059 # there is focused meditation and mindful meditation. In focus, once you see a thought and you notice it you quickly go back to focusing on your breath.
In mindful when you get a thought you observe it, don't try to let go just notice it and then it will pass naturally. Then go back to focusing on the breath.
i naturally and instinctivly looked at the middle the first time.
I wouldn't mind having subtitles on TED videos if it means that the speaker can better elucidate their ideas in their own language.
So so well said
Way to go Mehdi... nice talk
How much do you bench press brah.......?
When people say they are multitasking, they may not be giving tasks equal weight. I love the thought of computer training. I worked many years with stroke victims and other neurological issues. Aphasia is one of the hardest things. Like a baby, you have to guess how the person feels. We used computer speech with an ALS patient with eyebrow switch. For one who can't read, pictures for at least basic needs. Thanks for this.
Let's hope that Mehdi's brilliant insights and experiments can hopefully find a cure for the rather debilitating ADHD one day.
Anyone else watching this whilst they procrastinate?
TL;DR
Yep. Totally lol
Yap.
me
Actually working while listening to this, this time around 😁
Wow, thank you for the explanation . New to know. Thanks a lot
I was paying a game and using my cellphone, while watching the video. he caught my attention when i said ADHD, which I have. I would like to try that machine!!!
His bicep is soooo big!!
4:50 Yes, intriguing possibility, and not too far fetched. I'd love to see research done into this direction.
Amazing speaker
i like the idea of machines being able to talk for those who can't
it sounds beautifull
It will never happen.
Just looking at these comments clearly shows objectifying men isn't a thing. XD
The1stMachinist Yeap, not a thing at all.
Amen XD
So interesting!
You got my attention, but don't ask me what I've learned.
brilliant
You can also pay attention to something without looking at it, because seeing is only one sense. The most important one but only one. But for science it sure is handy to focus on one sense everything else would deliver bad results. It only would be nice to mention, that the focus is on seeing, right at the beginn of talk.
What a stud
These researches open door for telepathic communication
Great speech. It's interesting that people that can't speak can use a pc to track eye movement to be used to speak.
when brains and brawn collide, slurp!
Very interesting!I wonder how much of what he is saying can be helpful in intention,, mindfulness and weightloss!
That idea of possibly seeing what a person is thinking about in a coma is so crazy to me!
Shout out to all Iranians, good talk bro ;)
It’s easy to pay attention to his strong arms
Excellent and very promising holps بسیار خوب بود اقای مهدی اوردیخانی سیدلر عزیز موق باشی
Now I Understand
Love to hear native speakers of Persian speak English. Such a beautiful sound!
Anxiety and depression ruin my attention ability, I realize now other that can't filter out information from my multiple senses, I was also overwhelmed by my thoughts and memories, and my thoughts can be confusing to me. Random memories, words, and thoughts fill up my conscious capacity to focus on information. It was just a headache after that, I could feel my forehead just as if it overheated, and then crash into depression, all this makes me worry and the cycle starts again.
Listen..I'm not trying to advise you or tell you what to do, but why don't you enjoy these thoughts and memories? Don't push them away! If you're not focused so be it!! you're body will forcefully make you focus when it's necessary! Enjoy your life man! Your brain have all the informations needed for your survival! why are you trying? give it up! WHO CARES!
He is the definition of perfection
That's what being Iranian does to you...
I would love to be apart of this study.
Such big arms oh my.
I'm sorry, what did you say? I guess I wasn't paying attention...
Have a strong coffee. ;)
PowahSlap Entertainmint ted X left this video so wide open for that lame joke that they literally put it in the description
PowahSlap Entertainmint 😂
What an interesting treatise. I was mostly interested in your observation of the flicker rate. Please email me to engage a dialectic conversation on this subject. What effect does a Television's FLICKER rate have on the human mind? It's my contention that the FLICKER rate of TV has a negative effect on our minds. As a side note, what role does the PINEAL GLAND play or rather how is it affected by this FLICKER rate.
super video
I'm paying attention to you and your body papi sorry xD
yasss he hot af.
Set- Tes Omg exactly, I'd pay attention to him even he be talking in klingon
Set- Tes I stared at his body cause he's so hot. I wish that I could own that one.
wow
i was just about to joke about this when I saw the thumbnail
Asanichi Shichitatsu
Ye we are hoes xD
I'm very tired and I'm watching what my brain desperately trying to do X)
What?? He's basically saying that they're going to successfully make computers that can read human minds( for people who can't speak or are comatose)? *Oh,sure, that won't be misused at all....*
Natsya they've already been doing it. Some computers have already been able to do that, so this is nothing new.
Natsya hmmm
Iniki Thompson yea but this would be on a different level. so it's still new. assuming it works in the way he described
Vintasi no it wouldn't be on a different level. I've heard of them doing and designing this exact thing for quadriplegic patients in the hospital that can't speak. So again, this isn't new...well not for people like me who are highly involved and interested in the medical field.
Ohhh ok cool then. I guess I should of looked it up first xD. I just went off of what I have heard of so far x3
What if we can actually use computer to know what people in comatose think?? That would be sooo cool 😱
This is a helpful study to prevent future damage. Time will unveil its relevance... the frontal lobe seems to be the good study focus.. turning covert into good use for humanity and worldly morals. Guidance is for when we are the oldest living generation so be kind... think about history with a caring attitude so that we can overt our eyes to moral guidance and mother earth peace.. preaching to the learned im sure.. lots of time left to turn pollution around. It starts with you. And the ones related to you, friendliness, and your family tree; do the research and be aware of your own actions and consequence, semantics and linguistics are only the surface area of the filter. Emotional wellbeing comes from your actual service to now and here overt and be patient. P.H.C.
From recognizing some frequency applied as a visual stimulus in the brainwave pattern to understanding thoughts is a pretty big leap imho, but yeah 'soon' seems an appropriate word here.. lol
Great talk but I really doubt that everyone uses the same brain patterns to process the same ideas. Not saying that there’s no way to figure out ways to interpret certain patterns but I really doubt that we all learnt to process information in the same way to that level of specificity.
I'm paying attention to your speech while writing 40-page report
My attention is distracted at the moment, excellent talk tho
V nice mehdi
He is Iranian so am i and I'm really proud of him great job Mehdi that was brilliant. but i must say that next time, please don't memorize and speak too formal. just use some friendly words because our brain can accept and connect better to the tone of speeches we do daily
I wanna have those muscles.
What if we focus on the brain itself ? Mind will grow !
What if we focus on the body ? Same thing. Body will heal.
What if you focus on focus
@@Juanperezeperese You gain the power to see the future
Overt and covert attention has same mechanism of filtering noise
98% of people in the comments payed attention to his body :/
Thanks for the advicing... I have trouble in my life, i am indonesian, want to study foreign language, english. Sometimes i can not apply words to make conversation even i have many words in my mind, but i couldn't tell to somebody else, bcz why? I am too focus on grammatical rules. So that please give me sugestion to make conversation fluently without think the structure of grammar.
man, i cant even remember his name -.-
maybe his name was "uvuwevwevwe onyetenyevwe ugwmuhwem osas"
good day! I said good day!!!!
I got lost in the subtext at the end
how words move your body
Even though I am not against the idea of using brain imaging tech to advance people who currently have some form of communication disability or brain damage... Imagine this: you switch on this tech and immediately your verbal thoughts are being broadcasted through it. Even the impulsive ones you have no control over; and moreover thoughts are not static repetitive and recognizable; the same thought can be formed in a myriad of different patterns and different thoughts can be unrecognizably simillar to each other; so the algorhytm needs to be pretty fuckin flawless and seems to be out of reach for the forseeable decades.
💚
before his granpa died, he used the brain-machine-interface to grow muscles in his sleep
I was reading the comments and seeing the recommended videos, what were you sayin'?
takde pape
At first, I thought he was into sports or body building or fighting arts, wondering why he is talking about attention!?!
Hey hey hey
hello can you communication with me?
I don't think it's a specific computer game. I think video games in general are good for the brain. That's not to say that I think all video games are wholesome and worth playing - due diligence should certainly be done to research the rating and the content of the game before buying it and playing it. I was diagnosed with ADHD among other things as a pre-teen adolescent, but I was also very much into video games. Still am to this day. I would argue that video games taught me a lot of vocabulary as well as attention span skills that are still in my toolbox. I play games too much, but in moderation I feel like they are healthy.
Please put the Tamil subtitles also
He’s so nervous, his voice is shaking.
Never skip leg day
Guys, did I miss something here? In the experiment, he said that he asked people to pay attention to the middle of the flashing symbols. The then says that both signals were flashing from the back of the brain, but the signal he paid attention to was stronger. Confused, did he not instruct them to focus only in the middle, not any particular one?
He seems smart and it's a very interesting topic, but there is something in his voice that makes me feel uncomfortable :/
He really does, he seems to be in a different world, thinking... Almost as if he wasn't paying attention to the talk :D
YouKnow Nothing I think he was nervous... it seemed as if his voice wavering
He does appear to be quite nervous.
YouKnow Nothing always pay attention to the words try to geather them make a full picture of his idea , we human some times fool by people looks and voic
I don't think English is his first language and also he sounds nervous.
While I watch this video.... ignoring homework...
how am i always so early theres only 18 views
he's talking about paying attention yet he himself so distracting, stop being beautiful!!!!
Gerald Soria Stop being ugly!!!
Evelyn You clearly didn't understand my point.
You are now paying attention to your breathing. And blinking. And swallowing.
how do you become a Computational Neuroscientist
You start at the gym, obviously. XD
Well, I guess u weren't paying attention to the size of ur shirt when u bought it :)
Uhh, it's not his fault his body is cut and his clothes hug him. Some of us understand that, others don't LOL
MrALHADE thats how you are suppose to wear shirts moron
I just clicked on this video to see that bodayyyy
I know that it will be possible to understand the thoughts of a person who is in a coma. AI is now very close to it. We the government of different countries. People of science and technology area. Investors, innovators, Entrepreneurs need to attend more. This video was uploaded in July 2017 now it is two years over. Elon Musk and his scientist team doing very hard work on it day and night. And other universities also contribute a major role.
Mines shut down
I don't know, I never paid attention.
am i the only one who thinks he sounds like " Walter white junior "from breaking bad...
Read the tittle
Me: Wait what?
A WRONG BLINKING OF THE EYE CAN DISTRACT YOUR ATTENTIONS!
So what you say is if I pay over attention to your speech and then take my dinner your speech is still gonna be a passenger in my train of thought...
expecting more !!
isn't that what Stephen hawking uses to speak?
anEnigma he types his thoughts down in a computer and it reads them out. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Excuse me, what about Stephen Hawking? He has such a computer that speaks for him. Am I missing something?
Tell me about my brain, Daddy 😘✌🏼
I showed this video to my students and they were all sleeping.
John Stamos' brother?
heyooo.
How ironic. A professor discussing attention who's too boring to pay attention to.
Woww
Nice, Now skynet will be able to read our minds...
If you're not paying attention this guy is gonna steal yo girlfriend.
looooooooooooooooooooooool
His muscles will catch her attention and his voice will hypnotize
there is already some process for a person to speak through computers...... I saw that on one of the ted talks.... why do ted bring in such conflicting things
I would like to know what physical property they measure in the brain to see these wave patterns. Secondly, like everyone else said, he is a beautiful man, lol. Ironically, I just came from a satire video attributing good looks to genetics.
They use EEG caps to measure electrical signals from the brain
Pattern recognition of the brain patterns.
In a way, that's brilliant. But when you think about the implications, it's reaaaallyy creepy. Reading minds? What privacy do we have left then?
Or did I get it wrong?
It's kind of creepy, yeah. Hopefully, the technology would be such that those who wanted their brains read would volunteer to have the required apparatus attached to their heads. It it's a device secretly installed in our computer (or a virus?) that gets our computer to read out thoughts and send them elsewhere, then that _is_ something to be worried about!
