    D-Ray, I watched this video and memorized all the steps one by one as I have the exact same motor on my 1998 Tracker pro deep v 16. me and my Girlfriend changed out the impeller and lower unit oil in 45 minutes, tested it out in a bucket of water and the pump worked flawlessly. Thanks so much!! saved $250.00 bucks that the Marine shop wanted to charge me to perform both tasks.

    Thanks DRay! I've done plenty of auto motor work but never saw the inside of an outboard. My 35HP Force and the pump was slightly different but your 2 videos helped give me a good look at what I could expect before I got in there. You covered every detail that one would encounter in performing this maintenance. As I started doing this job, I noticed the vent and fill points on the gearcase and wondered what they were for. You cleared that question up and even gave me the tip on what lube to use.

    When I changed mine, I put the impeller into the pump housing first, making sure the vanes were all facing the correct direction, then slid the housing down over the shaft and then lined that all up with the shaft key. Make sure that the impeller vanes are bent the right way.

    I've got one that is a 1994. Seems like the shifting linkage is not located in the same place underneath the frame. Also, the bolts that hold the lower end on are of the opposite direction, requiring you to gradually pull the lower end down as you unscrew the bolts. Thank you very much for this video, by the way! A great afternoon for my father and I.

    Thank-you, D-Ray! Great videos. One question. Does it matter if you leave motor in neutral or does it need to be in gear (and which one if necessary)? Thanks again for your time in making these.

    I just replaced my water pump kit ordered from this description. Seemed to match perfectly. . I have a 40hp tracker Mercury 2002/2003. Put everything back how it came off and re connected shift linkage but now my motor doesn’t find the neutral although throttle is in neutral. Previously anywhere in neutral I could start. Now I have to move the throttle super slow in the neutral gear back and forth in its play room while holding key turned and sometimes it starts and sometimes it’s just dead and never attempts to turn. It doesn’t attempt to crank at all till it finds a spot in the neutral while holding key turned to start. so it never cranks till finds a spot moving throttle back and forth in neutral, then it does sometimes and cranks and starts. Any ideas?

  • @bimmerknut
    @bimmerknut 12 років тому

    Okay, I have a question. The water pump was pretty straight-forward and easy to do. I went to check the lubricant and unfortunately it was very milky. So when I went to get the impeller, I bought a seal kit for the lower end. I got the seals changed out and all looks pretty good. My problem is this. The bottom of my shifter rod isn't attached to anything. I call pull it straight out. I noticed that it is threaded on the end but I cannot get it to thread into anything deep inside the lower unit.

    I have a 1996 40 hp force Mercury just like your working on. The sticker with the serial number is so faded, I can’t read all of the numbers. Mercury told me they have it stamped on a freeze plug that is pressed into the block, but could not tell me where on the block it is. I can’t find it. Any ideas where to look?

    I have a similar Force motor and I notice something while running the motor with the muff`s. The bolts holding the lower unit on are tight, but it seems that water is being forced out from the housing where these bolt holes are located, while running. Bolts are on tight. Is this normal?

    I should right after starting. some of those have a check plug near the top of the cylinder head that you can remove and see if you have water flowing there.

    D-Ray loved your description of the 40 hp pump impeller change. Can you give me advice on silencing the warning buzzer on a '98 40HP Mariner 2 cycle. It is either the oil sensor or the water jacket heater sensor. Wiring looks good to both. Getting that little heat sensor is a real bear. I drained the oil out of the reservoir for the 2 cycle oil to check the oil level sensor. Thanks Mark in Seattle.

    Ray, I have a Mercury 40HP with oil injector I think it is a 1986 model, when I check the motor with ear muffs there is no water coming out of the hole, I checked to see if it was plugged and it was not, should water come out of the weep hole as soon as I start the motor?

    D-Ray, great video. I replaced the impeller with relative ease. I was wondering how much water should come out of the above water exhaust. I'm not getting a steady stream its more of just a spit. Any thoughts?

    • @lakejosh
      @lakejosh 6 років тому

      I have the same issue. In the process of replacing mine but the person before me used RTV sealant in the housing so it took a bit of time to remove all that before replacing. The impeller looked fine, where the water comes out it's like two little rectangles so it's not a steady stream like some outboards with one little circular hole. Water kinda spits out of there was also wondering if I should see more.....I think I should. My replacement kit came with gaskets, not sure why this guy didn't use them.
