While the serve height and visibility of the serve are factors as you mentioned, the ball is also supposed to be tossed nearly vertical ... which is where that serve might've been called illegal by many umpires. I hope this is helpful 8>)
That Xu Xin's serve at 2:53 should've been called on not being it thrown upward. I know Xu Xin's serve is like almost an arch everytime, but that one you can clearly see him pull back to actually hit the ball; otherwise it wouldve landed on his head.
No, as long as the ball is hit behind the table endline and above the table, it's legal. If you're talking about Xu's body blocking Ma's view due to the sideways toss, ie hidden serve, well, most top pros hide their serves a little bit and they usually don't get called.
No it's totally legal, he didn't serve over the table, he didn't serve on a side of the table, the ball has been thrown 16 cm high and his serve wasn't hidden :)
Ma Lin is 32.. he moves like he is 60. This guy is a pro athlete, my dad is like 54 and he never exercises and when he plays table tennis he is everywhere and covers so much ground
