Big 12 Believes FSU and Clemson Will Join As Soon As A Year From Now? | Clemson Court W Over ACC

  • The reports linking FSU and Clemson to the Big 12 might have legs, afterall. Arizona insider Jason Scheer reported on his X account that, “According to sources, there is an internal belief in the Big 12 that Florida State and Clemson are likely to join the conference within the next year or so.” If the Big 12 can use private equity infusions and creative advertising revenue to pay them significantly more than the ACC, perhaps this could become a viable option.
    Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs wonder if they were too dismissive last week over the Big 12 buzz. Can they afford to make big moves like this in order to truly compete with the Big Ten and SEC? Donno and Gibbs discuss a recent court victory by Clemson over the ACC and what it means for their dueling lawsuits with the conference. You will not believe how many travel miles the Cal football team will be racking up this season in their inaugural year in the ACC…

    Kenton is just being petty and resentful at this point. He swore up and down that the GOR was ironclad and FSU wouldn't even be taken seriously by courts. Now he accepts FSU and Clemson are out but now he hates the idea the Big 12 pulling off what the ACC cannot. Not to mention he firmly doesn't believe that ESPN will pull out of the TV deal. He should just hold or hedge his takes and let the process play out.

    ESPN has a look-in clause for January of 2025 where they can pass on the deal through 2031. Cheaper to take the best teams from ACC and place in B12 for much less than paying for a whole conference that most people don't care about.

    There are a lot of "estimates" that may or may not be accurate. There are lots of details you don't have, and I'm sure the admin at FSU and Clemson are not the fools you want to make them seem. They have info you don't. The B12 may or may not be able to renegotiate the tv contract with more expansion, especially in the class of FSU and Clemson. The ACC has already proven they're "hostile" partners to both of those schools, that relationship is permanently broken.

    SEC only would want FSU and Clemson as a block to stop Big10 from encroaching on their region. If Big10 isn’t interested in those 2, then the SEC isn’t. Those 2 don’t add enough value to go against the SEC policy of not adding schools from states that already have an SEC school. Only Texas was a big enough value to make the exception to that policy. FSU and Clemson aren’t even close to the brand and value that Texas is. I hate Texas, but that is a true statement.

    The negotiations and contracts are the difference between 1st and 3rd party talks. Clemson and FSU have only engaged in 3rd party talks with other conferences due to legal reasons. Its possible the Big12 thinks FSU and Clemson will be left holding the bag after the legal battle with the ACC is resolved and will be forced to join their conference to survive, but I think that scenario is not very likely. The Big12 would need unequal revenue sharing to land FSU and Clemson legitimately, and I dont see that happening considering their history.

      @@encycl07pedia- If it was just about football, why didn't the B1G go after FSU 10 years ago after FSU won the natty instead of UNC, UVA, Rutgers, and Maryland? Why not just target Clemson since they've been better at football than FSU the last 10 years?
      You do realize PSU has a $9 billion operating budget and TOTAL athletic revenue is only $200 million? If you're a university president, why are you going to allow 2% of your revenue to dictate the other 98% of your budget when making a 50 year decision?
      Two things can be true at the same time which is what FSU fans don't understand. You can be of value for what you do bring to the table, but you can also not be the priority for what you don't bring to the table. Right now, FSU and Clemson are valued but not the #1 and #2 targets. Get a travel partner like Oregon did with Washington and the rest is settled.

    • @encycl07pedia-
      @encycl07pedia- Місяць тому

      @@heartbreak25 Probably the same reason the B1G didn't go after Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, USC, UCLA, etc.: they were happy enough where they were and the geography, at the time, didn't make sense. Stanford and Cal were looking for a life raft. There weren't happy being in the Pac-4. After adding 4 West Coast teams, what's 2 more?
      If your operating budget is 9B USD, why would you care about a media payout that is only a small fraction of that?
      I never said FSU and Clemson were the #1 and #2 targets, either. I don't think that's the case.

    • @heartbreak25
      @heartbreak25 Місяць тому

      @@encycl07pedia- OU, Nebraska, TAMU, Kansas, and Iowa State tried to join the B1G as a package in 2010. The B1G was interested but didn't have the financial capacity they do today to make the deal work. They ended up settling for Nebraska, TAMU went to the SEC, every other team stayed. The B1G would've taken UT and OU this time, but they were immediately accepted by the SEC and never called.
      The B1G didn't target those teams for three reasons: 1) The SEC and PAC-12 teams were under a media contract. If you haven't been paying attention, realignment happens when a conference is out of contract. 2) They long wanted to go east and Texas and California are not east. 3) You're making my point. Bama, UGA, and LSU aren't AAU. Why target schools that won't fit?
      In terms of Stanford and Cal, once again, it's pretty simple if you're following along. The B1G TV deal doesn't have a pro rata clause like the SEC and Big 12. Every new team means the TV networks have to put up new money. That's why only one team is listed in the agreement to trigger new money. Fox told the B1G that the Bay Area TV market wasn't lucrative so they weren't going to pay for Stanford and Cal. Period. Is Stanford the most likely travel partner with ND? Yes.
      Thank you, you finally get it! They don't prioritize the media payouts above all, hence, they're not making media only decisions. FSU is great for a media payout. It's good but not great for the other 98%. Northwestern is great for the other 98% but poor for the 2%. Now does it make sense? Which is why Northwestern is more valuable to the B1G than FSU. Get it?
      If you're not saying it's a zero sum game then that's the debate? FSU and Clemson aren't #1 and #2. They could get into the B1G or SEC, but they don't control their own destiny in doing so. And they'll like need help either way.

    Oh, and Kenton, you are correct that FSU, is NOT negotiating anything at this time, with the Big XII. The reason is that if they were, the ACC would have a lawsuit against the Big XII called tortious interference with contract. The alienation of affection that you mentioned is the domestic relations version of the older tortious interference concept. So, apparently what is happening is that someone NOT employed by FSU is talking to someone not employed by the Big XII This is called third party talks. Anything discussed among third parties is not legally binding as a contract, and there is thus no tortious interference.

Yormark has already said that the Big 12 has a growth rate of 40% over the last two years. If the Big 12 was on the stock exchange, would this kind of growth rate in profit margins work for you. I would also encourage you guys to not underestimate Brett Yormark. He has done deals far larger than Clemson and FSU with NASCAR.

    Everyone saying this doesn't make sense HAS to be lying! Like I get, without Clemson and FSU, the ACC becomes a significantly weaker conference across the board. But you can't cope with that fact by continuing to downplay FSU and Clemson's moves to better themselves. I've been watching Alex and Kenton since before the lawsuits hit. The ACC-biased delusion gets stronger and stronger as the likelihood of FSU and Clemson leaving sooner rather than later increases.

    No conference is talking to any of the litigants until the legal issues are completly settled. The size of the trotious interfenence damage claims due ACC would bankrupt any two super conferences.
    The only way forward for the schools to get free to begin to negotiate with a new conference any sooner is to pay the severence fees as set forward in the contract otherwise expect a summary judgement after discovery is completed in North Carolina which will likely make any litigation in other states moot. Any talk of a conference having any informal or remotely tenuous feelers with either team at this stage is delusional and pure folly. All these rumors are likely the idle musing of unofficial individules to make for click bait or stir controversy.

    Okay I don't get what part of this equation you guys are not getting. Penn state, Nebraska, Maryland, Rutgers, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington. All AAU schools other than Nebraska who fell out but they were AAU when added. History would strongly suggest there is no Big 10 card for FSU and Clemson to play unless they get into the AAU sometime soon. So it begs the question did those 2 schools have a questionable at best plan when they started all this? It is possible because San Diego State completely misread their situation. So it's been known to happen.

    I'm pretty sure ND and Calford/SMU could drum up enough equity to match or exceed any PE the B12 could dream up, and if it was set up as an ACC trust, it would pay out annually, not a one time injection....all it would take would be the "will" to make it happen( which probably isnt there after the way they're being treated), plus it would have to be an equitable payout among all ACC teams (Clemson and FSU seem to lack the will for that path). This isn't just about money, it's also about seeking unequal treatment that aggrieved parties feel they are owed, so they seek a party to scratch that itch.

      It would seem that FSU & Clemson are sold on this Super 2 conference scenario possibly by private capital partners.
      The ACC was already guaranteed for increases. It seems like FSU doesn't want the deal to improve.
