@@brigidsingleton1596 Dunno. It's like snacks in a movie theatre, ChatGPT says this: Sensory Engagement: Watching a show or movie is a visual and emotional experience, while eating adds tactile and taste sensations. This multi-sensory engagement can make the experience feel richer and more satisfying. Emotional Comfort: Both eating and watching entertainment can be comforting, and together, they reinforce each other. Eating releases dopamine and other feel-good hormones, while favorite shows offer an escape from reality, making for a cozy, pleasurable combo. Mindless Eating Habit: Watching something can distract us from monitoring how much we’re eating, leading to "mindless eating." The show or movie keeps the brain occupied, which can make people less conscious of portion control or hunger cues. Social and Cultural Norms: Food has always played a role in social activities. Having snacks or meals during movies has become a cultural tradition, dating back to popcorn in theaters, and it’s seen as part of the experience. Enhanced Relaxation: Eating while watching can make people feel more relaxed, as both activities are associated with downtime. This combination often becomes part of a person's routine or reward after a long day, creating a comforting ritual.
It's a shame Gretel's tag failed, but I'm glad that the story ended well for the shark, as many of these incidents that grab a lot of public attention do not.
It makes me happy seeing the perception of sharks change over the years. these arent mindless monsters, rather beautiful wild animals that deserve our respect.
The way they freed this shark is so inspiring! When I grow up I want to be a shark farmer too, herding my flock of Great Whites around. Maybe even train myself a dolphin to respond to my whistles and shouts of "come by!"
Dr Skomal’s book Chasing Shadows, was great, he talked about this incedent. I LOVE your vids by the way! I wait allll week until Sunday to watch !! Thanks!! 🌊 🦈
I read it as well , excellent book , I highly recommend it. Another great shark book is Devils Teeth by Susan Casey. It's about the shark research at the Farallon Islands.
That was a happy story! I've heard it before, but you brought a lot of information to light that was new to me, and it was nice to hear the story told so well! Thanks for that. I am glad Gretel made it to safety at last. Who knows? She might still be alive out there, growing and growing... but then again she seems so directionally-challenged that she may have ended up in a canal somewhere and... no. Best not to think that way. In my mind, Gretel is still swimming the briny depths and will be doing so for years to come!
Great job with this video (and I love your videos in general). My brother, Dr. Mike Armstrong, just retired as assistant director of Mass. Division of Marine Fisheries and he had been on the boat with Greg Skomal when he tagged this great white. I remember him saying that you don’t realize how big these sharks are until they’re right beside you.
I haven't swum in the ocean since 8pm on August 21st, 2008. I live in Half Moon Bay, California, in the middle of the Blood Triangle. When we were younger we used to jump off the rock Jeti and swim in the deeper waters near the shore. At the age of 17, you think you are invincible. Well on the night I felt something huge bump me and it rubbed up against me. From the time it bumped my leg and stopped touching me I could count for 3 seconds. So this animal had to have been 16 to 18 feet long and was so powerful. It put a fear in me I have never felt before. I had nightmares for a long time ever since. I still do occasionally. I'm 100% sure it was a Great White bumping me then I was going to come back for an exploratory bite. Luckily I caught the wave and rode it back in within seconds. All my friends were screaming swimming back to the rock Jeti cause they saw a big dorsal fin. I can't bring myself to go back into the ocean. When you feel something that big and powerful bump you it changes you. Especially in the dark. Do you think it was a Great White? It was late summer when they fed on Seals. I'm right near the Farallon Islands. Where Marine biologists study the seals and great white behavior.

My dad was born and mostly raised in New Bedford Massachusetts. He lived by the docks. He says he couldn’t remember one incident of a great white shark being caught there. Him and his friends would annoy the fisherman coming back in … they would beg for fish. Many times my father would bring in a fat fish for his mom to prepare.
It would be great to get your opinion on two shark attacks in Mexico in 2022 in the pacific, in both instances the shark bit thighs and victims bled to death. Officials blamed bull shark but would like to hear your opinion on the matter
OMGosh, I grew up on the Cape. There was another shark that sat in the marsh in Falmouth and WHOI (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute) even came out to intervene because so many kayakers were trying to see it. They were basically harassing the shark as they were sitting in kayaks or human twinkies. Thanks for covering the Cape. We’d also watch the fishing boats coming into Hyannis Harbor and we knew when a coast guard chopper was following to get out of the water because the boat had called in a shark following it back. Not necessarily a great white back then. Such a fun spot to grown up!
