    When I started playing trombone, I had just learned how to do vibrato on bassoon, so for a while, I played trombone with bassoon vibrato 😂

      wait what? yep I’m a year late but how do you do vibrato on bassoon???? I’ve been playing for 2 years and I never even thought about vibrato (probably because I’m dumb 😂)

    I am struggling as a French horn player turned tenor horn, and this video was helpful!

    Instead of imagining the word "ya ya ya" each time you vibrato, as a trombone player I found it easier to get the vibrato down saying "wa wa wa" over and over again. It just feels easier and more natural to me.

      Kevin Yang I relate. I cannot do the "ya ya ya" form

    These videos are really helpful and they have helped me a lot, but one issue i have had is when i play high (Like high B flat concerts) i cannot play quietly. In one piece i have to play high c's at piano and i cant play it less than a forte.

    Is it important for your vibrato to be on tempo with the metronone?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 років тому +14

      if you are isolating vibrato as an exercise than an ABSOLUTE YES! The whole idea for you to do it as a separate exercise is to gain contol in speed and with and metronome will be your best friend here. if you are talking in context of a piece, then no. Mix it up depending on what you feel will work best with music. However, in order to do that you need to be in control first and timing will help you acquire it. Hope it help buddy! Best of luck practicing, Algirdas

    Disagree about Diaphragm vibrato. When done well it's the most natural kind, musical and flowing, like a singer. The problem is few people do it well, because they are defaulted to the mechanical, boring, sterile Jaw vibrato

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 років тому +17

      I should have probably clarified that it is possible to do it well, it's just that I haven't seen all that many players who do it well apart from singers. Diaphragm vibrato was the first vibrato I learnt and it got me more trouble than actually benefitted me. But I see where you're coming from

    • @frednich9603
      @frednich9603 8 років тому +12

      As a teacher, I liken it to be left or right handed. Some people have the gift of A very natural, pretty Diaphragm vibrato, and do better fluctuating their air stream than their embouchure. Others are the complete opposite, and asking them to bump and push the air sounds terrible. I have students try both. I find that over 90% of my euphonium students are better at Jaw vibrato, but tuba players, because of the size of the mouthpiece and the movement it takes to actually get a vibrato going, are split 50/50 between the air and the jaw

      +frednich9603 That is a very interesting point! Very good topic for discussion! You should make a reply video regarding this, I would be more than happy to share it on my Facebook and etc.

    Wouldn't "yah" engage the tongue, which would be bad? Why not try "mah" or something that doesn't engage the tongue?

      The captions are probably automatically created by youtube and not the video maker at all.

    I know this trumpet player who cheated a vibrato by rocking his fingers on the valves. It sounded terrible tbh.
