Robotic sculpting to save cultural heritage

  • Up until now, it could take a sculptor up to a month and a half to make a copy of a corinthian column. Now, thanks to a French-made stone-carving robot, it takes just a week.
It can do pretty much anything you programme it to do.
First, the original is scanned and the data is downloaded into a computer to create a 3D version of it. The sculpture's 3D image can then be repaired or even altered for reproduction.
Today, this technique is mainly used to obtain digital copies of our precious historical heritage.
At the abbey of Cluny in eastern France, for instance, the robot gives visitors access to works they would probably never see, such as a replica of Saint Peter. The original statue belongs to a museum in the US.
"Here you have a museum quality copy. It's very interesting for visitors who can't see the original because it's in a museum on the other side of the Atlantic," said Ghislain Moret de Rocheprise, the founder of Lithias, the company behind the robot.
But a machine alone cannot produce such perfection. You always need a sculptor to give the finishing touches or the statue won't come to life.
"What gives life to a face are the details, the wrinkles, the creases. What I do is add sensuality to a piece of stone, that's all," said sculptor Cédric Courtois.

This is dated way back in 2014. Its not 2019 and CNC type and 6-dof or 7-dof robotic arms like Kuka and Fanuc can do details must better than humans

But replacing a robot sculpture on a heritage site, is not the same as a hand carved one , originally they were hand carved , so they should be put back hand carved

actually no, if you can get a better result that is closer to the original that youre replacing by using machines you should. Humans make mistakes and they are expensive.

      Nahh,
If you dont do it the old school way. You disrespect the hard work thay did back than. And if it isent 100% the same what so? Atleast it isent a cheap copy... made by a robot. With no love.

Humans are still sculpting, except the "sculpting" is happening on a computer rather than in person. It's the way the world works now.

Disagree as well. At the end of the day, sculpting is simply removing material, it doesn’t really matter how it’s done. What matters is that it is done. The beauty of this is that it is seeing loads of classical building destroyed by war especially in Europe otherwise simply demolished because it’s becoming increasingly affordable. To hand sculpt would cost huge sums given the marble or stone block costs thousands just to begin with, just costs a lot to extract it and transport it. But then you have to pay highly skilled craftsmen many thousands a year. Problem is, it takes months sometimes years even a decade for some sculptures to be made and that’s how long it originally took often at enormous expense but then Governments didn’t pay for social security and health care and even the military were back then relatively cheap to arm and maintain. No tanks, missiles never mind aircraft, radar, airforce etc to finance so the truth is a lot of taxes actually financed the construction of huge highly ornate but even at the time considered extremely expensive monuments, public buildings and yes, personal palaces for Kings and princes. In todays money it did actually costs hundreds of millions not infrequently leading to revolts like with the Russian Tsar or French Kings who then not only financed the Napoleonic wars but the destruction and almost complete reconstruction of Paris instead of personal palaces. Today statues of equal if not even better quality are being produced at an absolute fraction of the cost of the original and this is enabling the restoration of many old buildings as they’re no longer much more expensive than a modernist designed building. It’s rather Luddite to say it should be done the way it was originallly entirely by hand. I mean should slaves still work in a Quarry hammering huge blocks of stone or marble out to be authentic too. After all, it’s all done by huge machines towed away by huge trucks now.

What about a pneumatic chisel to replicate the sculptor?
