Al Stewart = absolute brilliance, ....the artistry is unbelievable,.such class, i knew this was great music when i was a just a kid in the 70s, and Al can still do it, surrounded by wonderful musicians. thanx for sharing this.
I was just 14 when it first came out and I absolutely loved it, and still do. One of the best and most engaging songs I've ever heard in my entire lifetime.
Al Stewart is still in fine voice after all these years. I still get chills up and down my spine from hearing “Year Of The Cat”. I was a mere lad of twenty when this song came out.
Same for me and want to add I am not in Love from 10cc. God the music was just so much richer than the drivel from today. Although there some great artist around round, I miss the richness of songs from the 70s and 80s
The open piano chords of this tune always and instantly transport me to the living room of my house in Bloomington, IN, circa 1976. There was so much great music during my college years.
Don't know what you're listening with - but clearly he can't hold or reach the high notes. Not surprising, age doesn't do any of us favours in the long run....me included!
@@wtc175 OP said his voice was "as clear" - didnt say he was hitting the same notes. In any case Al Stewart's voice sounds a lot better than McCartney, Brian Wilson or Elton John.
@@wtc175 True. I saw Al Stewart performing through the years. I respect him for his beautiful songs, and because he is a kind and optimistic person. But his singing is definitely not what it was. Why not be honest about that. Although the song is tuned down 1/2 tone, he avoids the higher parts and does some Mark Knopfler-like sing/talk parts instead. Is he to blame for that at his age? No, he isn't. But he could have chosen another way: tune the song a few more steps down an sing a lower version with the original melodic structure, fitting his present voice. Apart from that: his musicians are technically good, but they don't seem to be able to give the song the right atmosphere, (my opinion). There are a lot of musicians of Stewart's generation still active, and I like that. But we don't have to be critic-less all the time, do we?
Wow! I can't believe I found this. I loved everything Al Stewart when I was a teenager in the seventies. This is the first time I have seen him since then.
Ya know, this the first time I've ever seen AL Stewart, it's wonderful to see this tune performed. "runnin' like a watercolor in the rain", what a friggin' line!
In '76 i was in the Royal Navy, and heard this for the 1st time whilst on weekend leave at a house party in a cool part of London - what a beautiful song that transports me back to those carefree teenage years. Great to see that Al is still putting on great shows with this talented bunch of musicians he has assembled 😊
Had the pleasure of seeing him in a small venue of a few hundred people and it was amazing. Not only a great performance but the way he interacts with the crowd is great. Al is a legendary artist, and one hell of a classy guy.
I was lucky enough to see both. First the concert then next door in a small pub where I get a tap on my shoulder saying you know I wrote this song. He autographed my cd that night also.
Amazing live show. I have seen Al something like 14 years in a row, mostly at Eddie's in Atlanta, but also Chicago and elsewhere. My first Al Stewart show was in the Ericson Kiva at Michigan State University in 1984. Hey is the smartest, kindest, and funniest rock & roll star I've ever met. And he sounds fantastic!
Saw him at a little casino in Carson City a couple of years ago and he still looked great and sounded the same as ever. A very funny and intelligent man as well as talented composer.
I didn't hear the song for the first time until sometime in early 1977. I was 14 then, and I loved it. Still love it even today. Rich storytelling, amazing arrangements and orchestration were the things that drew me in. One of the best pop-rock songs from the late 1970s, the late 20th century too and a classic to boot.
HA! Broke my fingers on those chord changes & shapes as a very young player. And Al's voice... The lyrics came last but got me for life, the whole package is there. Such great memories, thank you for putting this up Greg!
