    I did a DEXA Scan in March at 225 pounds around 28% fat. In November I showed up at 197 pounds. It said I lost 18 pounds of lean mass and 10 pounds of fat and overall my bodyfat percentage only went down 1%. Shows I need to lift weights, and not just cut calories, and get in enough protein.

      That’s a very important point you’ve raised, that a lot of people don’t take into consideration.
      An 85kg person with 10% body fat has 8.5kg of body fat mass. A 65kg person with 10% bf will have 6.5kg.
      So, what needs to be borne in mind is that these percentages are in PROPORTION to your total mass. People often overlook that, and try to attain incredibly low levels of body fat which professional 100+kg body builders want. Not realizing, that 8% bf for a professional bodybuilder in kg may be 15% bf for a marathon runner. Both look like they have hardly any body fat, as it is proportional to their total mass.

      I have a hard time believing you lost 18 pounds of lean body mass and 10 pounds of fat. Unless you consumed a very small amount of protein and laid in bed the entire time how could you have lost muscle.

      @@devinjansa9329 Yeah, something is not adding up on this one. Just basic biology would have him losing far more fat than lean mass on a caloric deficit diet. I think the scan is inconsistent. Unless he was lifting and had unsustainable gains (less than likely).

    Renpho seems to be more accurate on athletic people, but I think it is worth it if you just want to see a trend. Like, I don't have access to dexa scan, but working on building muscle, so all I want to see if my muscle mass is increasing and whether my fat percentage is decreasing. I don't care about it being super accurate, I just want to see where I am going, so renpho will be enough for my purposes. Thanks for this little experiment. Merci Shervin Jan.😊

    I think the word Tejas was looking for is "precision". It's important to know the difference between precision and accuracy, which, to be fair you all probably do if you're into fitness trackers and data, but some people do use them synonymously. Another great video Shervin.

    The variations between different scales is interesting. I gotta assume the DEXA is the most accurate. Also the point Tejas brought up in the video where as long as the scale is consistently showing a certain body fat and that goes down when you lose weight that is what matters most. I gotta find somewhere around me to try a DEXA scan.

    • @SCKMusic
      @SCKMusic Рік тому +2

      yeah problem is when the device reading is so off, it's hard to even read the trends from that device cause you dont know if that device can first of all read what we are trying to measure, two if it has linear correlation reading (so if it reads 70 for 90, 80 for 100, then we know it has a linear correlation but sometimes devices might not be calibrated and have exponential or even random correlation such as 70 for 90 and 80 for 140, 60 for 150). so I dont know what to trust after seeing this video. The best way is to track your waist and neck circumference and just go visually i guess.

      With these devices it really depends where you carry your fat. Ideally they would measure from head to foot and that would get your torso and legs where most people carry their fat. If you carry your fat mostly in your legs like I do, then a scale one will be more useful for tracking progress. If you carry more in the back and belly, then handheld device will be more useful. Or, you can look in the mirror and weigh yourself. For me, I know I’m doing well when the top 2 abs are fully visible. That’s about 15% and 200lbs when I’m well conditioned. Right now I’m on a weight loss regimen because I blew up to 250lbs in 2020, I made it back down to 215ish in 2021, got comfortable and stopped tracking calories, and now I’m 225 but with better conditioning than last year. So my goal for next year will be to get down to 200lbs and maintain it. Already started tracking calories and macros again this week since thanksgiving is my DGAF eating holiday. Lol

    The Renpho scale sends an electrical impulse up one leg and down the other and then uses some algorithm to calculate body fat % based on how long it takes for the impulse to travel that path. The Apple Watch strap does the same but sends the impulse through your upper body.
    So I'm guessing Tejas has some pretty skinny legs without much fat, but we all saw that he has a pretty flabby tummy 😄That's why his readings were so wildly inaccurate. Although I haven't seen them naked (lol), Mike and Shervin both appear to be more athletic and "balanced", which is why their readings aren't toooo far off.
    My Renpho said 12.4% this morning, but I'm gonna order that strap too and see what it says. I've always wanted to do a Dexa scan but now realize I don't really have to, my body is also pretty athletic and balanced so the deviation should be similar. Thanks for saving me $200 @ShervinShares!

      @tiddyt6527 Рік тому +4

      I’m pretty sure the Renpho scale has an “athlete” mode. If you turn this on, it assumes you partake in intense activity either daily or weekly which causes the readings to be lower than it actually is. Which is what I’m assuming Tejas had his on. I turned mine off and found consistency between Renpho and the 3 point caliper test.

    As mentioned in the video. It doesnt really matter what the number you’re getting. It’s the trend.
    Being consistent in tracking your progress and controlling the variables. This is what’s important.
    Like using a different scale, it’s gonna be off ever so slightly. What matters is using the same scale. Tracking around the same time, under the same conditions.
    So if you weigh yourself in the morning after you use the restroom. You should aim to always weigh yourself in the morning after using the restroom. Control the variables and track progress over time

  • @chrisward2k

    So the way the Renpho and Aura ones work is from passing electricity through the body.
    Electricity will take the shortest route to create a circuit. So given Tejas body, it might be differences in leg and upper body body fat. As the renpho will just look at legs and Aura upper body. However, there is clearly still a strong margin of error. When compared to dexus.

Why can’t they make something like this and have it do the activity/sleep tracking? I unknowingly got a tattoo where the Apple Watch sits before I knew about the Apple Watch not working over tattoos. I’d def buy a strap like this if it did all the other tracking, cause the bottom side of my wrist isn’t tattooed.

    For the renpho saying you only had 12% did you set it up in athlete mode? Cause they will change a lot. Try switching it to the other mode. For me, when I do the other mode it says I have like 38% body fat which I compared to online photos of 40% body fat and I’m no where close. Switched it to athlete mode and it came in around 20ish something which made way more sense given the amount of fat and muscle I have.

      Yeah, I'd be at like 40% body fat if he's 30% and I'm a bit overweight, but not that overweight.

    29%?!?! That dexa scan was WAY OFF. 25% Sure, 29%?! No. At 29% his abs showed from an off angle visible enough to see. He would literally have to be carrying a ton of lower body fat we couldnt see and his back.

    How does that apple watch work? The percentages don't add up at all

    • @chudchadanstud
      @chudchadanstud Рік тому

      The watches are useless for people with a lot of chest muscle or muscular people in general. It's because the send an small electric signal through the chest and the resistance is used to calculate the bf% again a known table.

  • @thebrizzy
    @thebrizzy 2 місяці тому

    For Tejas to go from 29% bf to 16% bf he'd only have to lose about 20lbs of fat. When your small the numbers fluctuate easily.

    Whats the rationale of checking your body fat percentage everyday? Can you really drop percentage on a day to day basis? 🤔

    • @MR-fn7rw
      @MR-fn7rw Рік тому

      If you want to drive yourself crazy, check it everyday. Hydration can affect your percentage with Dexa and bio-impedience. Even with Dexa, it’s recommended that you use the same machine when measuring changes.
