Producing music is challenging, fun, and exciting but let’s be honest, sometimes daunting. It takes a mixture a incorporating musical talent with interpersonal communication. Music producers must be able to effectively communicate their ideas to the artist during each session. Some situations will require the producer to encourage and push the artist to give more or take the idea and refine it. There will be those rare and potentially difficult situations that will require us to tell the artist their idea is not best for the project.
In this video, you’ll gain the close up experience and be a part of the intimate process of the production duo You’re Not My Dad consisting of bassist Jackson Eppley and guitarist and engineer Ryan Truso as they produce the pedal steel parts for their original song “Day Drunk in Reno.” Jackson and Ryan make multiple suggestions to the pedal steel player Justin Schipper to guide and facilitate the process of creating the best song.
Bassist Jackson Eppley is leading the pack of a growing and popular trend in the music industry. He has taken his experiences of being an accomplished bassist and producer and is now songwriting and composing original music for film and TV. Nashville is known as a songwriter's town and Jackson has made his home there and left his mark in continuing this tradition. His achievements coupled with Nashville’s variety of music instruments has given this video an opportunity to explore an unfamiliar but highly recognizable instrument, the pedal steel guitar. You will not want to miss 'Producing Country Music with You’re Not My Dad' (and the haunting and moving tones this instrument produces. At least let our UA-cam video give you a tease. We know you’ll be hooked!
Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,
Warren
Produce Like A Pro is a website which features great tips to help the beginning recordist make incredible sounding home recordings on a budget.
the joy of a producer when the musician or musicians do an extra part unexpectedly and it fits
Hi Erns Cadeus yes indeed! It's truly wonderful to have a musician who is free to be able to both be able to express themselves and also play for the song! That is an amazing skill and takes great guidance from the Producer! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
i what him work on my country song i m working on @@Producelikeapro
This is one of favourite videos! Why? Because it shows perfectly the balance between musicianship, expression and playing for the song! Bravo to Jackson and Ryan for guiding the very talented Justin Shipper's performance! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Produce Like A Pro q1
fantastic video indeed, thank you !
The last solo he played was just perfect
Agreed! Amazing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Agreed, it sounded like a drunk person, but perfect for the song!
Brilliant video to not only show how to produce the instrument, but also promote the instrument to people who haven't heard of it. Well done :D
"Your version of 'suck' is hilarious." This happens so much in the studio! Part of the job has to be honoring the commitment of the players. While allowing them to be self critical, the good producers I've worked with never let the musicians be so down on themselves by setting too high a bar, or letting perfect be the enemy of the good. Great video! 🤘
Haha yes indeed Paul! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
thank you so much warren - glad to see that country music is still alive, i used to play in country bands for almost 30 years and that's the kind of music i like most; realy appreciate the variety you come up with; hope you'll do some more "nashville" stuff to keep us country music lovers up to date; always great to be back to your channel :)
Hi Fritz, thanks very much! Yes, I really want to show all styles of music!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow. Out of guitars, drums, basses, orchestral instruments...pedal steel is my absolute favorite. So heavenly sounding. Thanks for another amazing installment. More cowbell! I mean pedal steel ;)
Hi Kurt, I agree! The Pedal Steel is a truly great instrument! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hi Jack, I agree! The effortless way Justin blends chords is amazing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I'm crying here miles away from there, What a sound guys, thanks for sharing! I love nashville "country" sound
Thanks very much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Oh, man, what a player! It's almost frustrating that he stops dead in his tracks right after he played something killer... You just want more! And props to "You're Not My Dad" for the production chops, getting the best out of a musician (by encouraging him to get out of his comfort zone) and for the awesome name!! Thanks Warren, Jackson, Ryan and Justin!
Thanks noisesoundtonevibe! Yes, I really enjoyed this episode! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Most excellent video showing the creative process of the pros. Well done! I'm a steel player here in the Virgin Islands (only one too) and have Justin's steel with Cyndi Lauper’s performance of “Heartaches By The Number” from her Skyville Live performance as one of my 'play along with the pros' practice tracks...Thanks for the post
What an great instrument. Ive always loved the Pedal Steel. It should cross over to all sorts of styles. Pink Floyed comes to mind but not much else outside country. Has so much oppertunity for feel/emotion, much like a guitar
I've always loved the way Pedal Steel sounds! Now that modern Country sounds like AC/DC it's time for us Rockers to use the Pedal Steel more! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Its the best sounding instrument ever !!
Haha yes indeed Darlene! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
We definitely need more of this instrument--in genres outside of Country. Maybe Beck used it once or twice (Beck Hansen).
Agreed BAwesomeDesign! Beautiful instrument!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Frankly, 12:55, one of the most nice sequence of notes and chords that I listened in my life! Fantastic pedal steel player!
Watching this guy play inspires me to practice steel more.
Great player, excellent guidance from the producer. Love the video!
Thanks David! Yes, I agree 100%! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow! What a great session. Great vibe in the studio with a very talented musician and producer who knows what he wants. Thanks for the opportunity to look over the shoulder of some real nice guys at work. Tell me about that old Yamaha console and the work flow through it. Looks like a similar vintage to my first live console which is in a dusty road case out under a pile of junk in my shed. Might have to drag it back out and see if it still works. Cheers.
Yes agreed 100% Perry! I beige it may well be an old live console! They get great results from it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Haha!! I literally JUST moved back to Reno and came by this and I also play the steel guitar Lol
Favourite video ever on this channel!!!!!
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it chungaleta1234! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

No pressure, no pressure at all!
And that's how the pros do it...
Hi nasanction agreed creating an environment where artists and musicians can flourish is really important! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Beautiful!
Thanks ever so much
This is more my style of music so it was fun to play with mixing this song.
Thanks, I needed that. Alone today.
Hi Loren, glad you enjoyed the video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Love this!
Thanks very much Mike!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That's a sweet pedal board set up and someone asked what kind of steel that is kinda looks like an old fender with a new pickup to me but there's so many Ive only owned Franklin's pedal steel first a single neck now I got the double with the c6 god I love pedal steel so much soul i love getting to see some behind the scenes stuff always looking for good techniques my problems always been the recording technical side I can play any instrument basically but I just can ever seem to want to get a new studio set up already went threw the whole losing a 100k worth of gear and a house because of drugs what a life please no thumbs up I'm literally allergic
Justin is playing a Show Pro in this video. They are great guitars for studio work. Sonically great. For home overdubs you only really need a good DI, DAW and some VSTs if playing wet. The expensive stuff is really for the big guys like those in this video. They need it more. Producing a full record needs it more than just recording a pedal steel track.
I do remote sessions and have had no complaints about tone and clarity (apart from a rookie mistake of the steel being mono on one of them). The guys in the studio have sometimes re-amped my playing and worked their magic.
This video almost brought tears of emotion WOW! My only question, what tuning is he using on his pedal steel?
E9 Tuning
Really great video. I love playing country so thanks for this insight.
Thanks very much Phil! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
awesome insight. love that sound!
Thanks very much Hayden! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Fun!
Hi Terry, yes indeed! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
sounds like there's a phase 90 in the pedal chain. Reminds of Buddy Emmons.
I love the Phase 90 Guitarwizard! Such as great pedal! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Whoooaaw. Justin's the man,right?
Hi Tommy Ekløf agreed 100%! Amazing player! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
What is the tuning on that please ........I'm a guitar player that tries to achieve that sound from time to time.
Great question! The most common tuning for pedal steel is this:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E9_tuning Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
sounds great
Excellent video, very revealing
Thanks Camilo!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren!! Very nice video!! Is not hard to see that this guys level of professionalism has clear the path so nothing gets in the way of creating great music. Could you please share the information on their studio or the studio were their at? Thanks
Hi Hevert, thanks very much! Their studio is in Nashville! I will have to see if they can answer exactly where! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Warren!

Thanks You're Not My Dad Production!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Enjoyed this video a lot. Is this the same Justin that was with The Inbetween group a few years back? If it is, he can really put some licks on lead guitar also. Thanks for the post!
This man on The Steel Sooooooooo Nice
Don't know what they were drinking, but it looked good.
Haha whatever it was they were having fun and the track is fantastic! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Lovely content! Keep it up!
Thanks very much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This guy is a god
Where can I download the song? I love it. Good work and very informative!!
Nice video man!
I appreciate it! Thank you! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Anybody know what make/modal the Pedal Steel is? Great video by the way.
The session would have gone along a lot faster if the steel player inspired by the Bakersfield sound had been drinking the same tequila and lime that the engineers were sucking on !
Hi Piedscooter1, hahaha I feel like it moved pretty darn quickly! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I’d be curious to know what Justin had on his pedalboard during this session. I see a POG, a GE-7, a JHS Colour Box, and what I believe is a rehoused Mostortion. The other row has what I’m thinking might be a Line 6 M5, and either a TC Nova pedal of some sort or maybe a Strymon, but that big white one in the corner is a mystery to me. Any ideas out there?
On the off chance that anyone else comes across this and wonders the same thing, I figured it out. It’s a Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper. Really weird but cool pedal.
Where can I find this song and what's it called?
Where can I listen to the complete song? Is that possible?
It isn't released yet, as soon as it is I will let everyone know! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro thanks! I will be looking forward to it. It sounds amazing.
@@Producelikeapro Hello Warren :) what is the update on the song? I'd love to jam along but i cant seem to find it anywhere
Shit was cool
are they drinking whiskey while recording to keep the vibe of the song? :D nice touch
Haha maybe Stephan, I suppose the song is called Day Drunk In Reno after all! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Haha that's what i thought. Have a marvellous time yourself Warren. Best from Berlin Germany
Haha exactly! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Stephan,
You nailed it! We were lucky to have a laid back day in the studio with friends where we could make that happen.
nice. keep doing what your doing. i had a blast watching the video. never had the pleasure of recording a Pedal Steel yet.
Engineers drinking and shouting during the artist tracking.... even if your yelling 'perfect!' it can rattle your concentration - this isn't a bar show - this is tracking.
Has this song been released?
Fuck yeah
this was great and all but I don't think it really showed much in terms of producing it. it was mostly just a guy being really good at pedal steel.
Sam Gray what do you mean? He is obviously a great player and certainly got most of the way there himself, that's why he got hired. However these guys clearly got him the rest of the way there. That's part of what a producer does.
i would have liked to have seen more about the choices made when deciding what cab to use, what pedals he was using and what signal chain they used and why they were guiding him to the performance they got. like it or not the people producing (who did a great job) didn't really display anything out of the ordinary
Sam Gray I feel like terms are being mixed up here. While those are parts of producing the sound to be recorded those are more engineering aspects of production. Being a "producer" in this sense is guiding the player to achieve what is felt to be right for the song in terms of the part being played.
If you search for "how to record pedal steel", "types of amplifier for pedal steel" and research aspects of signal chains that would lend themselves to the sonic characteristics of country music you will find answers for decisions they would have made before they began videoing this!
i would like to see more of what i stated. which is included under the banner of producer. after all, that is a lot of what warren's channel is about.
Sam Gray Maybe in the modern day Sam as producer and engineer are roles that have been more often than not merged together these days. I believe Warren is referring more to the classic role of producing which is equally as important as the engineering side you are alluding to.
What is a great sound if at the end of the day you aren't able to extract an equally great part from the player. There will be a plethora of videos and info geared more towards what you believe is absent from this video.
I get what's going on here but this shows that studio musician is not as glorious as rock star. Still have a boss(es). TBH, I would find working for these guys annoying since one guy says one thing and the other says another.
Hi Chris, thanks for your comment! I found they encouraged what he was doing and got a lot out of him! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Was having palpitations for that poor steel player. No one wants a camera watching you do a take.
he's using too much of that same G chord with the same bend.
steve istheman most likely because the chorus is so repetitive
Is this a joke?
