  • In this video, I show you how to play the D major scale, ascending and descending on the right hand.
This scale is made up of a collection of 5 main white keys and 2 black keys, which are called SHARP notes. When the scale is written musically, a sharp note can be found by looking for this symbol #.
In the TREBLE CLEF stave, the # symbol appears just after the treble clef symbol but BEFORE the time signature, and sit on the musical stave line of the note to be sharpened. On the BASS CLEF STAVE, the # symbol appears just after the bass clef symbol and BEFORE the TIME SIGNATURE, and sits on the line of the note which is to be sharpened. There are variations to this, but in this case the notes of the scale we need to sharpen to play the scale are F to make it F# and C to make it C#.
Ascending: The first D played is known as the ROOT note and the second D is known as the OCTAVE note as it is D in higher range.
Descending: The first D played is known as the ROOT note and the second D is known as the OCTAVE note, as it is D in a lower range.
To play the D major scale ascending, place your thumb the root D, then place your index finger on the next note which is E, then the middle finger plays F# (to locate F#, you will play the FIRST black key in the group of 3 black keys, where the WHITE key F sits next to the first black key in the group of 3), at this point you will then need to TUCK YOUR THUMB under your fingers to play the G, you indeed finger plays A, your middle finger plays B, then your ring finger plays C# (to locate C#, play the FIRST black note in the group of 2 BLACK notes that sits next to the WHITE C key) and your little finger will play the OCTAVE D.
To play the D major scale descending, place your little finger on the root D, then place your index finger on the next note which is C# (to locate this, you will play the BLACK note that sits next to the WHITE C), then your middle finger will play B and then your index finger plays A, then the thumb plays G. When you get to this point, CROSS your MIDDLE FINGER OVER to play F# (to locate this, remember it is the FIRST note in the set of 3 BLACK keys), then the index finger plays E and the thumb plays the lower octave D.
