Die Metro von San Francisco ist eher eine Art Stadtbahn, welche auf einem Netz von etwa 115km verkehrt - dies zum größten Teil oberirdisch und tlw. auch in Straßenlage. Lediglich der zentrale Bereich auf der Market-Street wird im Tunnel befahren - dieser nur wenige Kilometer lange Abschnitt bündelt alle Linien und ist der Inhalt dieses Videos. Zum Einsatz kommen Stadtbahnwagen von Ansaldo Breda, welche in den kommenden Jahren ersetzt werden. Sortiert ist dieses Video in den Tunnelanlagen von Ost nach West.

Ich denke, preislich ist ein Stadtbahnsystem angesiedelt zwischen einer normalen Straßenbahn und einem System mit Hochbahn- und U-Bahn-Zügen.
Es hat, da es aber Berührung hat mit dem Individualverkehr, eben auch den Nachteil, dass es von Staus beeinflusst wird, was die U-Bahn/Hoch-Bahn in Berlin und Hamburg so nicht hat und erst recht auch nicht München und Nürnberg.
Hatte ja mehrere Jahre in Hannover gelebt und kenne das System und wohnte vorher und nun auch wieder in Berlin.

In Chicago hat die dortige Hochbahn auch nur eine kurze unterirdische Strecke und ist ansonsten oberirdisch.
Ich weiß nur nicht, ob sie verkehrsrechtlich als Eisenbahn gilt (dafür sprächen die Bahnübergänge) oder als Tram (dafür spräche der Zugang, der an manchen Stationen über den Bahnübergang erfolgt).

It is also notable that the underground section of MUNI Metro is operated using ATO (automatic train operation), that is, the train drives itself into the next station. Is there actually any other light rail in the world that uses ATO?

The light rail in Düsseldorf uses ATO in the tunnels.

The Docklands Light Railway in London uses ATO, and the trains are driverless (no cab at all).
The system is partly above ground (with raised stations, above street level) and partly underground. I used to ride it going out to Greenwich, and it's quite fun to sit at the front of the carriage especially when the train dives underground like a huge roller coaster.

Yes and there are lots of These Systems in Germany like in Hannover or Cologne

By the way, San Francisco has also a subway, as known from NY and a tram. Is there a special name for these both?

@@robfriedrich2822 In many Systems the Overground Platforms are high. I think the subway and trams have different Names.

@@dumbass04 I miss this in San Francisco, because in Hannover the majority of stations is equipped with high platforms, so that some lines can run special trams without the shiftable stairs.

" ist eher eine Art Stadtbahn" - also ich würde sagen, es IST eine Stadtbahn, einziger Unterschied nur, dass oberirdisch die meisten Stationen niederflurig sind und lediglich die erste Tür eine Rampe hat, um Rollstuhlfahrern den Zustieg zu ermöglichen.

I visit Volgograd and i think, that the system in Wolgograd are better! In SF it is automatic and a lot of problems in afternoon. so you are faster by foot! In Wolgograd its very fast...and in good function! Only the vehicleage is different, but it is not so important i think! :-)

I haven't been out to Downtown Frisco in years. Last time I was out there I was harassed by an aggressive panhandler so much that I feared for my life. After that incident I vowed never to go out there again. Downtown Frisco is a very dangerous place.
