    Very fine video, thank you. A very beautiful and capable machine.
    Mine takes regular 15X1 needles without any problem at all. After a bit of adjustment and cleaning, it went from being noisy to being an extremely quiet and very smooth machine. The only noise I hear is from the motor and the "clicking" of the hook and feed dogs. The typewriter key mechanisms click when the mechanism is engaged but otherwise, the machine is as close to silent as one can hope.
    Thanks again for a fine video.

      You can use 15x1 needles if you are only doing straight stitch, but if you do zigzag or pattern cams the needle will hit the bobbin case. There is a replacement case you can buy that has more clearance for zigzag and patterns.

    This was the machine on which I learned to sew. My mother bought it new in 1956 (so it is older than I am) but it still sews like a champ! For it's time it was truly the most advanced machine on the market. I have the complete set of fashion cams and it does many more stitches than some of my modern machines. In "1956 - dollars" it sold new for $469. It, originally, used an "odd-sized" needle which are becoming more rare. It CAN be re-calibrated by a competent technician to use modern sewing machine needles.

      @@r.duroucher225 It did not cost that much in 1956. The average American family only had an income of $ 4,500 at that time. The Singer # 319 retailed for $ 299.99, which was a great deal of money. I love how people "inflate" the cost of things. The Singer # 401 machine debuted in 1957 and sold for $ 359.99 and that was expensive !!

    Thank you soo much for your great reviews!😊😊 Could you please tell me the difference between singer 319w and this one? Can you combine stitches with this one like you do with 319w? In case I buy it, is it easy to find replacement parts if it is necessary? I'm looking for a good heavy duty machine and first I saw the singer 20u. But unfortunately it is a bit pricey..also, the 319w or this one seams to be better (more stitches). What do you think? Sorry about all these questions! 😳 Happy sewing!

    Hi Alexander. Quick question (hope you see this). I bought this exact same machine with everything included (cams, orginal table, etc) - a bargain at $40. The stitch length adjustor was stuck and was not moving. I oiled the machine from top to bottom according to the owners manual hoping this would fix it. It did not so i tried getting into the machine to oil the parts of the actual stitch length dial. It started moving a little but in the process i ended up breaking from too much force - the actual dial snapped off. The machine works great. Now i'm thinking this may be a costly repair & wondering if i should call it a loss and toss the machine out (or donate....). I got a little teary eyed after this happened. Wondering what the cost of repair/replacing this part may run me although i know shops charge different rates. :(

    • @AlexanderDyer
      @AlexanderDyer  7 років тому +1

      It will do buttonholes if you can do buttonholes. It is a somewhat manual affair, You have to mark the position and length of each buttonhole. You sew up one side, tack the end, sew in reverse on the other side after re-positioning your needle then tack the other end. I think there are probably a few videos on the UA-cam to help you learn. good luck.

      I think there is also a button hole foot, as well as a button foot, that was available for this machine when it was sold new in the past, but nowadays, they seem hard to come by. Even with the button hole foot, the process is manually intensive, like Alexander described. If the manual describes how to use accessories, that might help. Best of luck.

      The difference is country of manufacture. The 20U is an industrial machine, much bigger, stronger, faster. The 319 is a very good machine in my opinion. Smaller, cheaper, more stitches. Parts are available but be aware that some parts will need to be acquired from "parts" machines. All 319 machines should perform in the same manner in terms of combining stitches.

      Thank you so much for your reply! ☺☺ Now, I own a Singer 3323 (domestic machine). That was my first one. I have problems with topstitching thread so I'm looking for a machine that it can handle this. After using this type of thread the tension goes off. The guy at fix shop told me that topstiching threads can handle only industrial machines. As far as I can see, 319 has a manually tension right? This might can handle it. Also it looks really powerful machine.

    Decorative stitches do not work on the Singer 319k Sewing Machine. You move the front stitch lever after triggering the desired decorative stitch, the needle post moves with it. But the Singer 319K sewing machine does not move the needle to draw the decorative stitch, sometimes it threatens to start and becomes heavy. It looks like something has come loose inside the machine in the needle movement mechanism.

    That does make a better zig zag stitch than the Singer #401. For some reason the #401 has very strange tension on the underside of a basic zig zag and the satin stitch is not that great. I have sewn on at least 20 of them and they all have that same trait. Oddly, the Singer #600 "first series" has a better zig zag stitch than the # 401-500 machines.

      I like your comment. I have never had a Singer 600 but now I'm interested. I have had a couple of these 319's and several 201s and I just really like them both. Thanks for your insight.

      The only issue with the #600 machines is that they are mechanically very complicated and many do not understand the self-winding bobbin mechanism ( or how to wind one ).The bobbin does not not hold as much thread as a #221-301 machine does and there is not a tension spring, but a "thumb" that rests on the bobbin that controls the tension. If they are adjusted properly they work well. Singer developed a lower "thread carrier" that contained the thread before it travelled around the hook. I assume that is what made the zig zag stitch better than the #401-500 machines. The only decent ones are the # 600-603+ E series machines. In the summer of 1966 Singer switched to those famous "poly/nylon" gears that shatter.

      Oh really, well I have a concrete bench behind my house that is absolutely silent but it can't do a 3-step zig zag.
