  • Growing one's own food in urban areas can seem like a far-fetched idea. But not for one Pasadena family.
The Dervaes family has been growing their own food for more than a decade. They've been at the forefront of urban homesteading by growing thousands of pounds of food annually in an average-size backyard.
"I brought the country to the city rather than having to go out to the country," said Jules Dervaes, the man behind the self-sufficient farm he created with his three adult children.
The Dervaes' urban homestead is sustainable and dense. They grow and raise 400 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and edible flowers that amount to about 6,000 pounds of food a year, enough to feed the family with surplus left over to sell. Fresh eggs from chickens round out their diet.
The family-owned city farm is the talk of the town for many local chefs looking to cook up a tasty meal. The family makes roughly $20,000 just from selling their freshly grown produce. They use the money to buy staples that they can't grow like wheat, rice, and oats.
Reporter Val Zavala visits the Dervaes' homestead to find out what inspired Jules Dervaes to go green in the extreme.

Friendly nice honest people who care about the environment, their family, and the community. They are to be highly commended. I love the idea of urban tiny farming including front and side yard vegetable and fruit gardening. I also like the way they raise their live stock.

"Honest" nope. It's a scam for fame cash. They claim 6000lbs of produce per year on 1/10th of an acre. That's so biologically impossible it's a joke. Especially, with them growing low yield produce in little boxes.

To Grace Axisa: When I was in grade school in the Philippines back in the mid 1960s', we were taught how to make a vegetable garden and how to make baskets and slippers using twigs. Plus we were taught good manners & right conduct (G.M.R.C.).
The schools in the U.S.A. should make those classes mandatory, but they rather focus on sports.

Today was my first visit to your amazing channel. Your video was delightful, interesting, educational and inspiring. I am 75 and enjoy patio gardening and grew my first potatoes this year...in containers. Next spring, I will take some of today's inspiration to heart, and grow more vegetables in my back yard. Of course, it will be nothing that resembles yours, but it will be fun and offer me more exercise, and I will share with a few special neighbors. Thank you and your wonderful family. I look forward to more videos. Mobile, Alabama 5/6/'19
