These influencers literally make me ill. True self care , from a psychological perspective, isn’t about massage, pedi etc. it’s about true rest, honoring your boundaries, telling the truth about your feelings. SJP was actually quite realistic.
self care as a mother, is going to therapy and working out (gym, walk in the sun), a bath in private and putting in boundaries with money, social media, relationships and my time
Self care is just what it is - taking care of yourself. But the key difference is that it’s unique and tailors to individual needs. For some, it’s a trip to a nail salon, reading a book, being home alone for a couple of hours or a spa resort, for others it’s a 10 mins alone time in your house to just breathe. So I think when people look at celebrities and influencers, I think they should view it as “oh that’s nice, good for them, they are looking after themselves” rather than “oh I wish that was my day”. Contentment will help one to know what is self-care.
I can’t wait to watch this. I find so many self care by celebrities are hidden product placements or they ignore the crazy luxuries and expenses they have. I remember once seeing a “you’re not ugly, you’re just poor” meme & it’s so true….a lot of celebrities looking so good is because they have so much time for “hired” care because let’s be honest most of them aren’t doing this stuff themselves
The best self care for me has been discipline. I eat healthy food even though I want junk, because my body feels so much better that way. Likewise with a 2 hour workout before work. I hate waking up but feel fantastic for the rest of the day. Yes the lazy days are nice but those are best after working
“Paltrow is unapologetically herself” yes if by that you mean completely lo-lo 😅 Self care is really not glamorous. Sometimes it’s taking a shower and brushing your teeth because you’ve been too depressed to get out of bed lately. It could be finally getting to a workout after feeling sick. Or paying an overdue bill you’ve been shame spiraling about.
Agree completely with you (and SJP), it's tone deaf and unrealistic. I don't have kids, I don't have the same responsibilities many women do and even I have a hard time squeezing in time to just give myself a pedicure. These influencers are toxic, whether they want to admit it or not. The other side to it is women spending money on some of these treatments when they can't really afford it and going into debt because they saw one of these influencers doing it and think it's the way things should be.
I have to say SJP has been a working actress since she was a literal child (she was one of the Annies!) so I feel like she does have a good grasp on "real life" even if she is very buffered from it now. Paltrow's whole business model is scammy quackery but it was kicked off by her dad's death and her belief that all these alternative medicines and "healthy living" could have saved him (they could not have); it's really very sad and I feel for her taking that responsibility (incorrectly) on herself; but the conclusion she drew is just wrong and now she's terribly anti-science. All of which is to say I try to keep in mind the person's own experience when I look at what they stand for.
I do have time for a bath every night! I am single and live alone with my two cats. I don’t make much money. I live in a crappy apartment, so my version of “self care and indulgence” is something as simple as having a bath. I’m also a dance teacher so my body hurts at the end of the day. A bath helps a lot!
I think the time has passed for these self care videos! people want to watch 'real' content now, thoughts, reflection, travel, news, DIYs etc. I think this has been prompted by COVID and the world tensions and disasters of late so people are sick of influencer hauls and out of touch creators.
She’s 50 so she doesn’t have children to take care of I am 48 and I do a lot of self care after years of raising kids and working it’s not self indulgent it’s healing. I don’t have the money to do Gwen’s level but I have the time now to do so much more. I don’t advertise my self care but I’m not selling it like Gwen is. I find self care my luxury after so many years without it.
I take 20 minute-plus baths probably every other night. I don’t think of it as self-care. I like baths more than I do showering. It’s about cleaning my body, and also reading time. I am child free and I don’t work, but I’m not rich. I mean, to each their own. I make no apologies. I wasn’t able to have children, so I have a lot more time than mothers and fathers. I think we should all judge less and be allowed to live. We can’t be relatable to everyone, nor should we be able to relate to everyone. I mean, do we want a communistic society?
I will always ensure I make time for myself, either a bath, nap, or whatever I need to help me feel better and care for my family. I’ve worked and ensured my children had a good childhood, and I can totally care for myself as a priority.
I had a bath tub once in my old apartment. I was working like crazy and I reaaaally enjoyed having a THIRTY minute bath every night (if I wasn’t out or working). It was no less than amazing! Definitely not too much 😅 I miss it a lot.
I have been loving your videos. It is refreshing to watch someone that analises social media in a way the is healthy for the regular person. Thank you ❤
SJP has simply been advised to say this, to be relatable to ordinary women and excuse herself. I find this more annoying than Paltrow TBH. Because as you say, Paltrow is just being herself, whereas SJP is being insincere. She isn't stopping her own indulgences she just is smart enough to listen to her social media advisors, and refuses to talk about it. I find this disingenuous, for someone who has been enormously influential in the wrong ways, she has encouraged enormous wastage and misdirection of funds into frivolous items (some of which she has designed herself; who hasn't been a 'handbag or shoe designer' I wouldn't mind but the whole SATC thing has caused women to spend money on the wrong things: that money could have been used to invest. Instead she has indulged with her handbag/shoe line, now she's sorry and not being brazen about it. Wise move. OKaaay. But let's not celebrate her for wising up and staying silent. It's just another form of 'quiet luxury', i.e. so quiet you simply won't talk about it, and make that into a virtue. Sorry Caitlin but I can't stand her.
I was walking to the subway one evening in 2018 after a rare (for me) event at a clothing designer. A lovely woman in a fancy dress descended the staircase of a brownstone and made a joke to the driver before hopping into the open back door of the black SUV. As it drove off, I realized this perfect Sex and the City-like moment was starring none other than SJP. This was her home I was walking by. It was magical and she can claim all she wants that she is normal, but I still think she is NYC royalty. 🥰 (Truthfully I hear she is the real deal in person.)
I think there is a balance between the two. It is definitely true, that some of us do not have time for self-care. But if there’s no focus on it at all, society may believe that we are not entitled to it.❤
Gwyneth Patrow don't realize that those women who watches her videos are mostly the "ordinary masses". I don't think the people who can afford her lifestyle would spend time to watch her because they know what they want. Most of the masses are the ones gullible with celebrity lifestyle. That's what makes her unrelatable imo, because her target market are not those people who watches her videos.
I definitely agree that it can become over-indulgent. Especially because most self care content is advertising like you said! It’s consumerism rebranded as health advice. One example is how many people overdid it with skincare and then had to repair their skin barrier by simplifying their routines, it was just too much of a good thing. I also think the focus on self care is a distraction from the reality that we’re missing community care. We’re expected to do a lot of things alone that for most of history people worked together to accomplish! And it’s a distraction from poor working conditions too, we can buy bath products and face products and fragrances that promise relaxation all we like but it’s never going to be enough to compensate for a toxic workplace or exhaustion from having to overwork to survive or being shamed and isolated during motherhood
there is a reason why gwenyth paltrow is one of the mosted hated celebrities in hollywood.i work with women who are tired and sick on a regular basis from being overworked trying to do it all.thanks you for making this video.
I think it's high time we completely cancel these so-called influencers for good. Enough of these fake money-hungry people who exploit the viewers shamelessly.
Caitlin, you are looking great 💝 I think this new path you have chosen suits you, and also is so much better in terms of where the world is headed these days....These influencers are getting ULTRA exhausting. I have stopped following most of them, they are too over the top now, in all they do, not just self care...
Why are we labelling relaxation time or time out, napping, doing nothing for a bit, when we lead hectic busy lives as "Lazy"? Paltrow is out of touch with all reality and let's not forget she was born into silver spoon Hollywood royalty. I work and weekdays am up at 4am every day. If i get to sleep in or nap on a sunday I don't consider myself to be lazy. I need to catch up on sleep to function for the next week.
Caitlin your videos are genuinely so so helpful to me in my life and I never missed any one of your videos you are my inspiration and I wish you have a best weekend💫🙂💕
I think these days “self care” in conflated with pampering yourself way too often. Sure, a facial or a massage is nice, but for me self care is showering daily, brushing my teeth, a short and manageable skincare routine, having a consistent sleep schedule…and even those things are luxuries to some people!
The fact Gwen has a 20 minutes bath each evening - how is her slobbing in the bath relaxing any different to someone slobbing on the sofa watching the tv for 20 minutes relaxing? It's how things are presented, that's all, much of it is just pretentious babble. I totally agree with SJP, it's tone deaf.
Taking a bath, go to the sea, reading a book, beiing in nature, taking vitamins and healthy food, yoga, meditating, cuddling with my guinea pig, a beautyday with a facemask, matchalatte and a book📘
I’ve always loved Sarah Jessica Parker, and was excited that you mentioned and linked the article (which I just read), I’ve been out of the world for a while now, and I’m still coming back to the curated things that I love - it’s going to be a long process. But it was really refreshing to see that SJP is still pretty much the same as she always was. Her response to self care doesn’t surprise me at all, and I don’t find it offensive, but realistic. She doesn’t want to make other people feel lesser just because they aren’t able to do the same. I always found her to be far more realistic and down to earth than Carrie on Sex and the City. In my head, Gwyneth Paltrow is still the same woman who starred in Wes Anderson films and recorded a song with her father for the ‘Sliding Doors’ soundtrack. Her being a mogul or whatever have you these days is something my brain struggles with (though admittedly, I’m stupidly curious about that damned candle of hers for some reason). Of the things she mentioned for her self care, I manage two, and to far less degrees. I have fibromyalgia and have have several back surgeries, and so for many years, I’ve been trying to to take regular epsom salt baths, as medically recommended. I try to make them more luxurious with a LUSH bathbomb (and cut that shit into quarters, my friends - one is far too big for a bath, and it won’t stain your tub as much; also it makes the price of a more “top tier” bath bomb less expensive), but even I struggle to do it daily, despite working from home on my own schedule. The other is massages. But I don’t leave my house. My partner and I were always going back and forth, having to rub CBD or some menthol rub on each other - he’s always sore from carpentry work and my back is always a mess. So we grabbed a few books and learned how to help each other out, and we make a point to give one another massages. Self care is important, but I can’t see the point of taking it to such a massive extent.
I think u have to work insanely hard for years to laze out like Gweneth. She shouldn’t have to dumb her life down, it’s inspiring and motivating. It’s just a suggestion really. I work every single day all day, but I dry bush, have a bath every day, meditate and I read for a bit every night in bed, but I don’t waste any time during the day so I can do that stuff. Gwen, you worked hard 🏋️♀️ I love hearing about this stuff!
I adore this concept but must admit, we need to drop the idea that all women are mums and that’s why they’re stressed. Your first three points about women were new mums, single mums etc. I get that it’s so many women and it’s true but it makes us non-mums (whether it be due to medical conditions like me or by choice) either way all women deserve to look after ourselves and probably want more time as well. Othwerise I adore your videos and have been bingeing them all day
In defense of people having really nice home gyms or home theater systems or home spas (which I don't have any of these, by the way), I think there are some cases where that is probably fairly "practical" for them. If they regularly and routinely entertain and have people over to enjoy their spa, gym, home theater, that could make sense. If they are really famous and cannot go to these types of places without being hounded and badgered by fans or anti-fans, it makes sense to me. If I was as famous as some of these celebrities, I wouldn't want to go to these kinds of places, either. People would either criticize you for what you were having done or they wouldn't leave you alone. That does not sound restful. I also think it's interesting that we get kind of hung up on the idea of home spas, but I have known several people who have had insane home theaters in their houses, as well as full bars and entertainment areas. Or crazy intense, gorgeous home gyms. I don't see a lot of difference there.
I think a 20 minute bath is very reasonable. I mean it take that long to shower daily ? It’s all about scheduling things in & having a routine … which usually means getting up earlier than everyone else. I go to the gym 5 days a week for an hour, usually sauna after and spend 20 minutes a night on skin care (not a bath person) and obviously it’s not always like that / I have thing come up and can’t go to the gym that day or am so tired I can barley wash my face let alone do an extensive skin care routine but I try to stay consistent & on routine. ❤️
Self care for me is when I’m able to lay in bed and read a book. I don’t need all the other stuff. Fortunately my kids are old enough now that I’m able to have me time more often.
Look honestly, I don't think that Sarah Jessica Parker's approach is pitying anyone. I'm thinking she just chose to speak her true mind on the subject because perhaps she's more in tune with the masses of women of the world. Now that's no shame to Gwyneth Paltrow. Frankly the woman is just being and doing exactly what was said which is, she is being her authentic self, and with that, I've always been a believer of living and doing self-care regimens within your own income bracket and capabilities. Just because you don't have the type of money or lifestyle as Gwyneth Paltrow does not mean you should go or need to go without and completely be deprived of life's enjoyment or indulgences when it comes to self care, whatever that may be for you. Otherwise, life won't be fun or worth living if we're always comparing, observing, and doubting what we can do to the next person that comes off as bigger and better. Yes in life we all have our real responsibilities. But we don't only work hard to make a living or to sustain a livelihood. We should also be able to have fun and live life to the fullest within our own means... again it's what I live by and I am by NO MEANS in the realm of Gwyneth Paltrow's income bracket OR Sarah Jessica Parker's for that matter.
Self care days .. lol no really I do enjoy self care .. just moments. Being able to do my nails every week, doing my am and pm skincare routine, hell even showering sometimes can be destressful. I do consider myself fortunate that I AM able to do that now having my 18 mo old.. BUT I am able to do these things bc I have a husband that helps me take that time to myself and takes care of my toddler. I know nowadays having a partner isn’t common and a rarity unfortunately. I will say in less than two wks I’ll be happy to just brush my teeth since I’m about to have another baby 😊 but that’ll be just another chapter for us to come ❤ .. self care will be defined as just be getting rest at that point for me 😂
This is while SJP is respected and you never hear anything bad about her. She has a unique beauty- that never synced with Hollywood. But, she was successful. The influencers are getting most of their stuff for free or bankrolling it themselves. A lot of these influencers are going to suddenly be 50 with nothing!
Yep, would love a video about the 'half life' sounds pretty interesting. Thanks for the reminder that these self care stuff isn't real. I mean stealing some time to paint my own nails feels like I deserve some sort of award for completion. The guilt of just taking time out to watch a video instead of watching a kids show, with my 7 year old, is real. I've been threatening to lock the toilet door, when am in there, for years now because it seems to turn into a confrence room once I go in. 20 minute baths every night????? 😅in what world?🤣 Am not saying its impossible, but something else will suffer.
I have two kids under 5 and it’s a luxury when I get to wash my hair. Bath?! That means I’d have to clean the tub after and that’s not something I have time for
I agree with you on many of your points especailly about over indulgence. But Gweneth P, is a bit on the out of touch nut side. Did you see her next flix series. Wow was it crazy wierd, some of the health practices she perscribes are a bit on the not safe doesn't cure any illnese but that is what they belive.
@@sams3015 good point. But some psuedo science she preaches is unsafe and could be damaging. I know she's all. About self care but she's wildly veered into I'm a kookie nut territory. Self care isn't meant to hurt you,
To be devil’s advocate, I would ask, are the people who buy a BMW instead of a Toyota also out of touch? They may not be relatable to me, but they have a different income. Maybe we as a society are too easily offended? Love these videos - they really get me thinking.
I put blue Nivea on face and that's it😂😂😂,and I 'm ok with it,I'm imune on influecing😂😂😂of that kind, being lazy is mision imposiblle,20 m bath ,rather take a shower ,lay in the bed and read a book
Are influencers/ celebrities self care days realistic for your lifestyle?
One of the ones that get me is the crazy gym routines. Even guys who are not fitness influencers or anything
These influencers literally make me ill. True self care , from a psychological perspective, isn’t about massage, pedi etc. it’s about true rest, honoring your boundaries, telling the truth about your feelings. SJP was actually quite realistic.
But therapy isn't as instagrammable tho?
Influences make everything toxic (self care, therapy, mental health, routines, etc). They make everything a “trend” for content.
self care as a mother, is going to therapy and working out (gym, walk in the sun), a bath in private and putting in boundaries with money, social media, relationships and my time
That's the real self-care - doing things that are a little bit hard to do but take care of the self.
👏
Self care is just what it is - taking care of yourself.
But the key difference is that it’s unique and tailors to individual needs. For some, it’s a trip to a nail salon, reading a book, being home alone for a couple of hours or a spa resort, for others it’s a 10 mins alone time in your house to just breathe.
So I think when people look at celebrities and influencers, I think they should view it as “oh that’s nice, good for them, they are looking after themselves” rather than “oh I wish that was my day”.
Contentment will help one to know what is self-care.
While I can understand why some folks watching over indulgent self care videos consider them as utopian, I share this take on it - it’s all relative.
I can’t wait to watch this. I find so many self care by celebrities are hidden product placements or they ignore the crazy luxuries and expenses they have. I had no idea about the backstory of the brand creation
Thanks for sharing this.

Absolutely totally agree with you 💯
Totally agree with you! X
A 20 minute bath seems so wasteful to me. If I’m having a bath, it’s like maybe once a week, and it’s 1-2 hours with a bath bomb. 😅
late reply here, but I don't even bath, just daily showers. A bath takes way too much space, water and money >
Same ! I rarely do a bath but when I do it’s a BATH 🛁 !!
She’s 50 so she doesn’t have children to take care of I am 48 and I do a lot of self care after years of raising kids and working it’s not self indulgent it’s healing. Gwyneth Paltrow does have children. If they’re grown, it’s simply that she’s in a different stage of her life.
I heard someone say "self care is just rebranded narcissism."
It's tongue & cheek but also made me laugh due to it's element of truth. LOL
It’s really annoying to hear these influencers say ‘self care is so important’ when you’re a busy mom. My self care time is very limited

So true... it can be so unrealistic well most of the time! To me, self care needs to work around you, not the other way.
Self care for me is doing what you said you were going to do. Not betraying yourself. And having a good night sleep.

bathing every day is a stretch for me. if I don't work out or seriously sweat or there's a heat wave outside, you bet I go straight to bed.

At last, someone is being totally realistic about women's lives. I also love your new take on being more conscious about spending. ❤❤❤

Thankyou so much for watching ❤️
Completely agree with you and SJP on celebrities self care 😊
toddlers will actually follow you INTO the toilet and want to watch you pee haha
😂 so true!
Othwerise I adore your videos and have been bingeing them all day
“go eat a packet of chips”😂😂👌🏽
It’s the NY versus CA awareness in US. CA is smug, and they think the entire country is a larger CA.
I worked in a restaurant in NYC and SJP was very nice to the staff
Self care for me is when I’m able to lay in bed and read a book. I don’t need all the other stuff. Fortunately my kids are old enough now that I’m able to have me time more often.
Thanks for sharing 😘
GP is an absolute nutter.
Finally someone addressing this.
Did that Gwyneth Paltrow candle actually read what I think I saw? Uhhhh WHAT?
Very true! Thanks for watching xx
I have two kids under 5 and it’s a luxury when I get to wash my hair. Bath?! That means I’d have to clean the tub after and that’s not something I have time for
that’s also your choice to be a mother
It's less about the time to have a bath everynight, just imagine the water bill 😂baths are so much more expensive than showers
I think that’s her sthick, sometimes I wonder does she use it to stay relevant
@@sams3015 good point. But some psuedo science she preaches is unsafe and could be damaging. I know she's all. About self care but she's wildly veered into I'm a kookie nut territory. Self care isn't meant to hurt you,
I remember watching one episode and thinking it was weird 😂 maybe I should watch the whole thing
The water bill 💸 after a month with every day 20 minutes bath 😂😅
SJP is the best. Great & relevant video. Thank you 🫶🏼
Gwynny love spoil this mom with a full size bathtub, would you? K thnx 😘💰
It's not self care it's working for 24h. She's saying that because she makes content and videos articles about it that why it's reachable.
To be devil’s advocate, I would ask, are the people who buy a BMW instead of a Toyota also out of touch? They may not be relatable to me, but they have a different income. Maybe we as a society are too easily offended?
Love these videos - they really get me thinking.
I put blue Nivea on face and that's it😂😂😂,and I 'm ok with it,I'm imune on influecing😂😂😂of that kind, being lazy is mision
imposiblle,20 m bath ,rather take a shower ,lay in the bed and read a book
total agree with you :)
Gwyneth Paltrow is honest.
I’m jealous of her lifestyle.
Nobody wants to bathe for 20 minutes every evening. That's boring. Self-care is really exhausting
I love soaking my body in the bath for up to an hour every day if possible get the water very hot takes away pain
