I'm a 73yr old male. Racism was presented to me as child, in a "matter of fact", and low key manner. Hatred & epithets were rarely used. I now reject that practice, HOWEVER, I find that I'm always Hard checking my responses, because this was something of an unquestioned, core value of mine, for many decades. About 20 years ago, I started thinking about how many communities, never get outside of their environment, due to lack of money, which leads to tons of other issues. Example; I was living in SoCal, and began thinking of all of the inner city kids, living a short drive from the beach, that never had seen the ocean. Small steps and checking myself continues to be something I can't stop. Please love ALL people. There are no "Other People".
My background is very much the same as yours, even my age. We were taught by bigoted people that it was the black people's fault we didn't have anything. My family members still think the same way. Prejudice runs deep in our past. Naturally, the view is going to come to mind. It's just our responsibility, since we now know better, to keep it in check. Prejudice will cause us to do things we didn't know we were capable of once we have a leader who promotes those very lies.
@@genevagould8276 Those who deny it exists have simply never experienced it. The African American female that punched me in the chest in junior high was not racist at all to me. She simply did not understand me. She just saw my skin color, and took her anger out on me at the time. No doubt, she was having more issues then race. I did not know her, but went to elementary school with the male that was walking with her, and it shocked him more so then I. He warned her that she could get hurt because he knew that I could handle myself in tough situations. But no worries, because I simply knew better then to strike females. Later in high school, she was working in the school cafeteria, and offered me a free plate of food, but I said no thanks, everything was OK between us. I always knew she was a beautiful individual, so racism is the farthest thing from my mind when I think about her. What is so freaky was I searched her name after thinking of her, and I ran into her obituary. She had passed a few days before I thought of her. I think hate and racism is just the same word. It goes hand in hand. No one is really immune from hate, and wouldn't it be nice if hate had a vaccine! The whole damn country would have to line up to receive one. It’s interesting that my Republican friends use the violence that happened last summer as an excuse for the violence at the Capitol; they literally don’t understand the difference.
Remind them that the violence last summer was started by the police. The protesters were simply reacting to THAT violence. They keep killing black folks and then feign outrage when we protest it. Fifteen ( 15 ) Republican Senators did not attend the Impeachment Trial today. They should be disqualified from voting by violating their oath to be impartial. There are penalties for oath violations from expulsion, suspension and monetary fines.
I called all of a select group of republican Senators and mostly could only leave messages today. I stressed one notion which I hoped might sink in. This thread about Oath Keepers here resonated with me because today I tried to emphasize during each call how much the oath keepers, the three percenters, and the proud boys share a common American tradition which is seldom recognized for what it is and how it functions, indeed has always functioned. Embedded in our society performing a role when called upon have always been our very own shock troops. Please use your imagiation and fill in the blank for the instances where these numerous individuals have manifested. For good or bad these types have essentially defined critical aspects in events for our republic over and over again. Our traditions have applauded, permitted and or excused their behavior down through the course of our history. We have just witnessed in our time the first direct example of this force being cleverly directed against our own government. Mobilizing and somehow appealing to the loyalty of this subculture within our essentially military culture has always previously been harnessed in ways more acceptable to the nation as a whole. In any earlier example more isolated situations have been brushed over and tolerated even if suspect because the results have reinforced rather than fractured our general level of comfort. The ability of any political creature to activate this collective and channel it is perhaps mysterious but should not be. It is simply a part of our fabric and it is indeed far more exceptional than given credit for. A recently cited and sterling gesture was Shanksville of course. Under appreciated and taken for granted to the point of being ignored for several decades as part of some historical abberation best forgotten. It has now been unleashed in the most inappropriate manner by our former President against what remains of our institutions of command and control. I advised the Senators I left messages with that much of their Impeachment decision should regard the use of this particular national asset by # 45 in disrupting the electoral process as grounds to convict. Indeed our own innate patriotism has been used against us.

The optics of the Capitol Building were worse, but no one's livelihood was destroyed. And I'd argue that the $2B in damage and dozens of people that were killed by BLM/Antifa last summer was much, much worse.
@@ronrolph Besides the lives lost, how many people have been (and will be) arrested and now have some serious federal charges pending. Their lives are over. And did Trump say or do anything to acknowledge these people who threw their freedom away for his lie? Nope. No pardons. He got what he wanted, mostly. But the repercussions of this are going to haunt america for many, many years to come. The GOP is going to crumble under the weight. Also, Trump has set the stage for someone else to come along and accomplish what he failed to do. But equating BLM riots with January 6th is fundamentally flawed. One was based on a social movement (taken over by agitators) that resulted from systemic racism that still persists. The other was the result of a political lie.
The Boogaloo Boyz were at the BLM protests and caused a lot of the damage and problems because they wanted to start a race war. This is a regular tactic with peaceful protests where provocateurs infiltrate and cause damage so the Police can use force to disperse the protests.

Michel Martin and Ronan Farrow, thank you both for the excellent edifying discussion. Underneath it all, are insecurities and emotional triggers that get the "ready for purpose" citizens drawn in. In my own family there was a lingering anti-Semitism that cropped up when job insecurities became an issue. It's the unfortunate nature of habitualized blaming of other groups of people when life gives you lemons, rather than looking at systemic problems and policies that lead to economic and social insecurities. My cousin infiltrated the clan years ago and found that downward social mobility was the leading reason men joined the clan or were succeptable to their pitch. Add to that the feeling that a few pull strings (take the home loan banking and economic collapse in 2008 for example) getting away with it, and along comes conspiracy theorists to fill in the gaps to explain the "deep state" behind it all. We need more thorough investigations, studied academic explanations, and correction on these matter to help fix what ills us and pull the curtains back on the real shenanigans as well as pull the curtains open on the conspiracy theorists, just like Toto did in the Wizard of Oz. Many thanks again to you both for this deeper investigation into what motivates these attackers of Congress, and the hazards of algorithms that send many succeptable citizens down the wrong and ultimately destructive path.

I think it's important to understand that no one thinks "I'm stupid, evil and I'm wrong. That's what I do". These attackers think they're right, they think they did the right thing, honourable even, that they're the victims. We should be asking 'how did this happen?' This kind of extremism is now a global problem (I'm from Poland) and I'm convinced that saying 'We're good, they're evil' is too simple. It is also missing the point to some degree. We need to get to the core of this fenomena. For me, the most important question is: What are the causes of this radicalization? Why people are more and more extreme? Why do we deny others their humanity because our beliefs differ? I don't see this problem only on one side of this war. Yes, I call it war. I'm most anxious. I'm afraid that the WW2 and stalinism horrors will be repeated. That murderers will say 'It's right because they're not humans like us and anyway it's for the greater good' and millions of bystanders will do nothing because they will agree or they will feel powerless. Profiling the attackers is important and a necessary step, but it's a huge mistake to say that the attackers know that their thinking is irrational, illogical, evil and wrong. The problem is, they don't. They would say the exactly same thing about their opponents. I know I'm kind of vague here and don't provide any solutions really, but I only wanted to add my concerns to the discussion, I always look forward to expand my point of view through discussion and learning other views. In conclusion, great job Mr F! Understanding, digging deeeper - let's keep it up :)

You can also tell that he really did his research and tried to understand these people's motivations (self-contradictory as they are), which is what a good journalist should try to do to get to the bottom of the story. Well done.
Exactly! Other people have had grievances, and tried to challenge the system within the norms, often taking decades to achieve their goals, like, the Women’s Suffrage; the Union, the Civil Rights, Farmers’ Rights, environmentalism, etc. But these people with their privilege, and entitlement mindset want to go around the laws and do what their cult leader and social media tell them, like it’s Black Friday and they must be the first to get their hand on a cabbage batch doll.
I appreciate how Farrow digs so deeply into these topics and is so generous to share his findings. We don't see this a lot in journalists today, and he is filling in a void that's quickly becoming a gaping hole in what we once called journalism. While listening to this, strangest enough, I thought of a word that seems unlikely, but may be totally appropriate: cancer. Cancer cells are damaged, and highly dysfunctional. They are always dying, carrying off resources with them on the way out, and polluting the rest of the body as they do so. The cells in a tumor are all different, in countless random ways, and are constantly changing. This is why you can't just kill them off with one shot of chemotherapy and be done with it. They also tend to ignore signals from other cells around them; they have gone rogue. Doesn't this sound a bit like Trump's followers? I just hope this society doesn't have some kind of smoldering terminal disease in the form of this…subculture.
Maybe more like a virus considering the times we are in. The Cancer analogy is apt never the less. But the difference may be moot. We must try and improve the terrain.
There's one more part of your cancer analogy that I think holds true - cancer doesn't take hold in a supremely healthy body. The body's immune system is always somehow compromised, weakened, and then cancer can gain a foothold. I think whoever said that if America falls, it won't come from outside our borders, it will be because we've weakened from within, saw the truth better than most of us are seeing it now. People whose country is supporting their dreams and efforts to build a meaningful life can't be radicalized.

Freedom fighters, that is how US media and politicians describe rioters in other countries. Example Ukraine 2014, there were freedom fighters,.. on whom US spent $5 billions to activate (Victoria Newland testimony in Congress) and still US embassy staff in Kiev plus then US assistant secretary of state Victoria Newland, further supported freedom fighters with cookies. Therefore, it's great inconsistency by the way Jan 6 events are covered by US media now. Building excitement to violence in other countries i common everyday US politics. The president could not know that the same is prohibited domestically ?
Seems like one of a very few left. I blame many journalist for the Trump phenomena. The ones that only praise him but the ones that only bashed him too.
Prejudice will cause us to do things we didn't know we were capable of once we have a leader who promotes those very lies.

me at the time. No doubt, she was having more issues then race. I did not know her, but
went to elementary school with the male that was walking with her, and it shocked him more
so then I. He warned her that she could get hurt because he knew that I could handle myself
in tough situations. But no worries, because I simply knew better then to strike females. Later
in high school, she was working in the school cafeteria, and offered me a free plate of food, but
I said no thanks, everything was OK between us. I always knew she was a beautiful individual,
so racism is the farthest thing from my mind when I think about her. What is so freaky was I
searched her name after thinking of her, and I ran into her obituary. She had passed a few days
before I thought of her. I think hate and racism is just the same word. It goes hand in hand. No

Very interesting that "Oathkeepers" want politicians who don't keep their oaths!
Well said Dyna. So true, lawless is what it is.
Fifteen ( 15 ) Republican Senators did not attend the Impeachment Trial today. They should be disqualified from voting by violating their oath to be impartial.
There are penalties for oath violations from expulsion, suspension and monetary fines.
@@MrDowntownLA do you mean , did not attend?
Not to mention they act as bodyguards to a Russian asset..ie. Roger Stone
I am continually impressed with Ronan Farrow. I am becoming a fan.

They want to equate trashing Foot Locker with trashing the Capitol Building.

You're exactly right. While some if not most, know Donald Trump was lying about losing the election, he speaks to their deeper fears about losing their "superior" place in society, so they pledge allegiance to his fairy tales.
But yes, I too wonder what is happening in the world that so many people don't see the danger in welcoming an authoritarian into their government.

I appreciate how Farrow digs so deeply into these topics and is so generous to share his findings. We don't see this a lot in journalists today, and he is filling in a void that's quickly becoming a gaping hole in what we once called journalism.
I'm sorry to learn that he is having to hire armed guards to protect himself from the truths he's uncovered, especially about this sniper/marksman guy who has clearly gone off the rails. That is concerning and I wish him safety until that guy is tried and jailed.
How criminal and cynical these Republican Senators are who still do not want to impeach Donald Trump.👎 and I do hope that voters will leave the Republican Party a masse.
I agree completely. I’m a lifelong Democrat but have considered becoming a registered Republican so that I could do damage from within and then vote Democrat.
I love the way Ronan Farrow speaks.
He is concise and no nonsense.
He is an awesome journalist and political consultant.
Can I join your sisterhood? Ronan needs his own show. Articulate and intelligent. A voice of reason.
Ronan Farrow is so impressive. His research, his analysis and his communication of what he has discovered reaches deep into the heart of his investigations and pulls out the pertinent pieces for us to view, analyze and decide on ourselves. Kudos to him and his colleagues. And to Michel Martin for her interviewing skills.
It's WT-NESS, it's not that deep it complicated. The country is browning and they're flipping out. Period 🙄
Especially if the 'brown' people have better educations, careers and $$ prospects than THEY do. That's why all the hatred for AOC and 'the squad' which is Fox-driven misogyny and death threats.
I totally agree. They are afraid. They wanted to revert the country back before the 60’s. A bunch of racists just like Trump.
You just hit the nail on the head! It's fear! I have always said when Jesus Christ returns he will be a black man! That would turn all the racist, religious groups inside out and right all the wrongs done to people of color!
It starts with them being unemployed over 40, or a small business owner whose business was shut down by the government due to the pandemic. Fix the cause, and the symptom will heal.
Did he say a mom of eight!? Wow that's impressive. We have two children, and between working and homeschooling my wife just didn't have the time to storm the Capitol. Call us lazy, or bad at time management, but just couldn't fit it into the schedule.🤷🤦
Fundamentalists seem to go for large families. I'd have been taken off to the loon bin. 😜
Ronan is great to listen to. Never distracted from the core issue. Great, to the point insight.
Social media makes us live in an echo chamber, where are views get reinforced without being exposer to opposing positions
And when you do see something you don't have to wallow in the discomfort and pain of your paradigms being shifted. You just leave a hateful comment and leave to never return.
That's a choice. We're all free to avoid social media, or follow a variety of viewpoints.
He looks so much like his Mother. And has grown into an exceptional writer, investigative reporter, Journalist who has a knack for getting into the WEEDS of a story. And when interviewed his ability to back up his work with a razor sharp clarity.
I would like to see him investigate Hunter Biden and his father.
He is smoking hot... His upper lip is suigeneris beautiful...
@@curiousfrenchy4333 he did investigate that, that's an aspect of the Trump-validated conspiracy theories...
Except his investigative skills tilt so far to the left, his original balanced self is gone.
He paints Trump supporters as crazy for accepting the idea of election fraud when intelligence and cyber security experts show EXACTLY how it was done.
Seems he didnt do enough 'investigation'.
Working in tandem with crusty feminists. Especially the race bating, bad hair lady.
I am so disappointed.
As a black elder, I find his take on racism was so cringe, my head is reeling.
Ronan, what happened to you?
Quite impressed with Ronan, spoke very succinctly about the core problems were are facing here
@teledine Sorry whoever you are, violently attacking our capitol hardly qualifies as a "reasonable expression of views". We all enjoy the freedoms of our democracy, trying to destroy that is straight out treason.
@teledine I agree - he is above it all elitist.
@@markwhitton8785 wow! You’re an adult, and still believe that capitol storming charade? Why not take a closer look at the crowd that never really tried to do anything at all. Then after that, turn off your tv. You obviously watch way to much of it.
@teledine yes. Sadly, even Eskimos can find themselves stuck knee deep in bullshit. I meant Bull moose shit, of course.
@@cb-tz8og Oh my god, you have just convinced me with your amazing and persuasive statement of zero facts, much like your weird orange buddy.
Great interview. Ronan Farrow is intelligent and well-spoken. Too many people get their news from Facebook...I live in a small town in WV, and have dozens of cousins, aunts, friends, etc., who believe all the Facebook propaganda, and when I try to give them "facts", they just repeat Trump's favorite line that that's all "fake news". I rarely go on Facebook anymore.
Intelligent. Well-spoken. And very nice to look at
I hear you, the same thing happens to me; I have learned to live with their stupidity.
Look up the Smith-Mundt Act, and why is wasn't reinstated.
He is young and still wet behind his ears. He should have put more time into this before coming to such shallow conclusions.
@@tonybullock7555 There's nothing shallow about what he had to say.
This guy Ronan kick ass.
He do.
Excellent analogy.☺️. Cheers from Michael. Australia.

I really like Ronan Farrow. He’s so smart and he explains everything so that I completely understand it. I like his books too.
Agreed.
He talks like this so we can understand the others on purpose try to act high amd mighty Trapper made a remark making fun of President Trumps 2 lawyers about how they talk and their words they used felt good to hear lawyers that I understood he seems to forget where he came from 🤣 SHAME ON YOU TRAPPER THATS CALLED BULLYING but its ok for u

All you need to know about the 2024 election is look at Texas and how the GOP has run that state. That's all you need to know about how republicans run things nuf said.

I guess you wind up killing a few dozen citizens because you failed to prepare your infrastructure.

We really do need a multi-party system in this country. The two we have now are 'marginal' and 'catastrophic'
Don't blame Texas because the Woke Green New Deal Power Apparatus failed miserably.
In what fantasy land do you think Demsocrats are leading. Killing tens of thousands of good paying which are push our energy cost to skyrocket. Letting in thousands of illegal aliens(and lying about it) to take few jobs we have for working class people. Providing no vaccines for Border and ICE personnel. Shall I go on... Ronan is my favorite journalist. Now I’m a HUGE fan of his partner Lovett. I bet their conversations are extremely interesting & often hysterical.
John Lovett is brilliant as well. Great couple.
@Danny Johnson nope! He called out sexism problem in the industry, & you’re a bad person for believing otherwise
Danny Johnson, doth thou protest too much?
@Danny Johnson matt's innocence is what got him fired. I get it. Buh bye!
Ronan Farrow is an excellent journalist! He makes good observations and I like he's authenticity 👊😀👍
Seems like one of a very few left. I blame many journalist for the Trump phenomena. The ones that only praise him but the ones that only bashed him too. America's loss of confidence in most media is justified and allowed Trump to do whatever, because if called on it he could scream fake news and people would cheer. This network seems pretty legit. I am sure they make mistakes but I find them credible overall. The problem is too many networks are not.

LoL, yeah read a few books on why humans believe the things they do, and you will basically see how humans and their beliefs are easily manipulated.
