  • In the Trump impeachment trial, a key element of the prosecution's case is a dramatic video taken at the Capitol during the insurrection. Who were the actual faces in the crowd? Ronan Farrow has profiled three different rioters to learn more about their backgrounds. All three have been arrested and now face criminal charges. One made threats on Farrow's life. Michel Martin speaks with the reporter about his investigation.

I'm a 73yr old male. Racism was presented to me as child, in a "matter of fact", and low key manner. Hatred & epithets were rarely used. I now reject that practice, HOWEVER, I find that I'm always Hard checking my responses, because this was something of an unquestioned, core value of mine, for many decades.
About 20 years ago, I started thinking about how many communities, never get outside of their environment, due to lack of money, which leads to tons of other issues. Example; I was living in SoCal, and began thinking of all of the inner city kids, living a short drive from the beach, that never had seen the ocean. Small steps and checking myself continues to be something I can't stop. Please love ALL people. There are no "Other People".

My background is very much the same as yours, even my age. We were taught by bigoted people that it was the black people's fault we didn't have anything. My family members still think the same way. Prejudice runs deep in our past. Naturally, the view is going to come to mind. It's just our responsibility, since we now know better, to keep it in check. Prejudice will cause us to do things we didn't know we were capable of once we have a leader who promotes those very lies.

@@genevagould8276 Those who deny it exists have simply never experienced it. The African
American female that punched me in the chest in junior high was not racist at all to me.
She simply did not understand me. She just saw my skin color, and took her anger out on
me at the time. No doubt, she was having more issues then race. I did not know her, but
went to elementary school with the male that was walking with her, and it shocked him more
so then I. He warned her that she could get hurt because he knew that I could handle myself
in tough situations. But no worries, because I simply knew better then to strike females. Later
in high school, she was working in the school cafeteria, and offered me a free plate of food, but
I said no thanks, everything was OK between us. I always knew she was a beautiful individual,
so racism is the farthest thing from my mind when I think about her. What is so freaky was I
searched her name after thinking of her, and I ran into her obituary. She had passed a few days
before I thought of her. I think hate and racism is just the same word. It goes hand in hand. No
one is really immune from hate, and wouldn't it be nice if hate had a vaccine! The whole damn
country would have to line up to receive one. I wish everyone in today's world were color blind!

I called all of a select group of republican Senators and mostly could only leave messages today. I stressed one notion which I hoped might sink in. This thread about Oath Keepers here resonated with me because today I tried to emphasize during each call how much the oath keepers, the three percenters, and the proud boys share a common American tradition which is seldom recognized for what it is and how it functions, indeed has always functioned. Embedded in our society performing a role when called upon have always been our very own shock troops. Please use your imagiation and fill in the blank for the instances where these numerous individuals have manifested. For good or bad these types have essentially defined critical aspects in events for our republic over and over again. Our traditions have applauded, permitted and or excused their behavior down through the course of our history. We have just witnessed in our time the first direct example of this force being cleverly directed against our own government. Mobilizing and somehow appealing to the loyalty of this subculture within our essentially military culture has always previously been harnessed in ways more acceptable to the nation as a whole. In any earlier example more isolated situations have been brushed over and tolerated even if suspect because the results have reinforced rather than fractured our general level of comfort. The ability of any political creature to activate this collective and channel it is perhaps mysterious but should not be. It is simply a part of our fabric and it is indeed far more exceptional than given credit for. A recently cited and sterling gesture was Shanksville of course. Under appreciated and taken for granted to the point of being ignored for several decades as part of some historical abberation best forgotten. It has now been unleashed in the most inappropriate manner by our former President against what remains of our institutions of command and control. I advised the Senators I left messages with that much of their Impeachment decision should regard the use of this particular national asset by # 45 in disrupting the electoral process as grounds to convict. Indeed our own innate patriotism has been used against us.

And did Trump say or do anything to acknowledge these people who threw their freedom away for his lie? Nope. No pardons. He got what he wanted, mostly. But the repercussions of this are going to haunt america for many, many years to come. The GOP is going to crumble under the weight. Also, Trump has set the stage for someone else to come along and accomplish what he failed to do. But equating BLM riots with January 6th is fundamentally flawed. One was based on a social movement (taken over by agitators) that resulted from systemic racism that still persists. The other was the result of a political lie.

I think it's important to understand that no one thinks "I'm stupid, evil and I'm wrong. That's what I do". These attackers think they're right, they think they did the right thing, honourable even, that they're the victims. We should be asking 'how did this happen?' This kind of extremism is now a global problem (I'm from Poland) and I'm convinced that saying 'We're good, they're evil' is too simple. It is also missing the point to some degree. We need to get to the core of this fenomena. For me, the most important question is: What are the causes of this radicalization? Why people are more and more extreme? Why do we deny others their humanity because our beliefs differ? I don't see this problem only on one side of this war. Yes, I call it war. I'm most anxious. I'm afraid that the WW2 and stalinism horrors will be repeated. That murderers will say 'It's right because they're not humans like us and anyway it's for the greater good' and millions of bystanders will do nothing because they will agree or they will feel powerless. Profiling the attackers is important and a necessary step, but it's a huge mistake to say that the attackers know that their thinking is irrational, illogical, evil and wrong. The problem is, they don't. They would say the exactly same thing about their opponents. I know I'm kind of vague here and don't provide any solutions really, but I only wanted to add my concerns to the discussion, I always look forward to expand my point of view through discussion and learning other views. In conclusion, great job Mr F! Understanding, digging deeeper - let's keep it up :)

In my own family there was a lingering anti-Semitism that cropped up when job insecurities became an issue. It's the unfortunate nature of habitualized blaming of other groups of people when life gives you lemons, rather than looking at systemic problems and policies that lead to economic and social insecurities. My cousin infiltrated the clan years ago and found that downward social mobility was the leading reason men joined the clan or were succeptable to their pitch. Add to that the feeling that a few pull strings (take the home loan banking and economic collapse in 2008 for example) getting away with it, and along comes conspiracy theorists to fill in the gaps to explain the "deep state" behind it all. We need more thorough investigations, studied academic explanations, and correction on these matter to help fix what ills us and pull the curtains back on the real shenanigans as well as pull the curtains open on the conspiracy theorists, just like Toto did in the Wizard of Oz. Many thanks again to you both for this deeper investigation into what motivates these attackers of Congress, and the hazards of algorithms that send many succeptable citizens down the wrong and ultimately destructive path.

Other people have had grievances, and tried to challenge the system within the norms, often taking decades to achieve their goals, like, the Women’s Suffrage; the Union, the Civil Rights, Farmers’ Rights, environmentalism, etc. But these people with their privilege, and entitlement mindset want to go around the laws and do what their cult leader and social media tell them, like it’s Black Friday and they must be the first to get their hand on a cabbage batch doll.

Hi Ronan. I can talk about one aspect of your interview. I worked as a Pharm Tech at a VA hospital for 16 yrs. I saw the carnage of war and their
Training. Pretty awful on the whole. These guys, some girls, are programed to kill. They see many atrocities and most end up with ptsd.
Of course they are not deprogramed when they leave. One vet comes to mind that was a friend. He was sitting on a atomic miscule out west somewhere during the cold War. For years, it was his job to engage if
Necessary. It effected him. When he left, he just signed papers and left.
No deprograming at all. He was older when I met him and his family. But
After the service he hooked up with a motorcycle gang and did alot of bad
Things. He was the head guy. He was still at "war". He changed in his later life and got help.. Sound like some of these vets now? Our military has always came back from wars with ptsd. It has always the changed the name for each war. This is not an excuse, but it makes them vulnerable to idiots like Trump and gang. I know this, but I still cannot forgive them for trying to overthrow our Government on 1/6. A messy situation for sure. But they need to follow the money. Get Trump and his minions in congress who are now obstructing this investigation. I think Nancy is making the right move on special investigation with just DEMS. Thanks for all you do.

But we can patrol it on our own, freeze them out. Republicans are getting asked for donations made to them, to be returned.
We can do this....don’t buy, don’t patronize, pay no attention to them. Boycott where you can.
Each of us though....find a Fix News addict and give them an internet alternative. Don’t like mainstream? What do you like?
