      I know it's brilliant right?
      Doesn't give quite the yeild of some DIY versions but we could always run two or three if we need more baby Brine Shrimp and we're not having to run an air pump and light for it. Looks better too.

      Daniel Keeping Fish the form factor and cleanliness is superb! For my few fish it’s ideal. I get about 3 days of hatching with fairly consistent yields (day 2 being the highest yield). Big fan of your channel. The vibe is very reminiscent of Mr. Attenborough’s works. Thanks & Aloha from Hawaii!

      Thanks very much homes.
      You may be able to harvest more at a time with those Jehmco ones but for me they're a bit more involved so for your average fish hobbyist just looking for a few at a time I feel like these are ideal. Plus they're a little more discrete and tidier than the larger setups so if space or shared living arrangements is a factor they get another wee point there too.

    Don't buy the salt/egg combos - super waste of money. Mix 1 tbsp salt (25 grams) with the bicarb pinch and shake in a one liter water bottle for the hatching solution. Buy good quality eggs and follow the directions. For a really good harvest, place a bright light over the center net for an hour or so. And no, DON'T JOSTLE THE UNIT or you get eggs shells in the batch. Cool product!

    I purchased this disk from Brine Shrimp Direct and my sample of cysts that I got were seperate. I feel this makes a huge difference in the use of the disk for small fry that might choke on the cyst shells. I mix up the water first within the container with my own mix that I have tinkered with, then gently place the eggs in the outermost ring. No shells whatsoever! It's awesome and this is all my killi fry will eat so I'm constantly using it. It's held up real well, I love it. Great choice!

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 роки тому +1

      They're great aren't they?
      I made a mistake setting it up and moving it. That's how the cycsts made it into the centre. I learned my lesson from that. Now I place it where it is going to sit before adding the cysts and eggs mix which works fine.
      The way you do it is another step up and sounds the perfect method though.
      Perfect food for your Killifish fry. I bet you are breeding some beautiful fish. Hopefully you'll show them on your channel at some stage, I'd love to see them at some point.

    I have one too, but mine didn't come with a salt mix, I just use non iodized sea salt. I think I like that better because I warm up a little water and then add 3 teaspoons while it's still in the cup, then I can stir it in real easy, pour it in and top up to the line with a little more water. I get it to wherever it's gonna sit so I don't have to move it, moving it will slosh some eggs into the basket, and add 3 scoops. For anyone new, adding extra will hurt your yeild, what I've found anyway. The temps are important too, I just open the vent in my room and keep it warm in there. It seemed a little expensive when I bought it, but a big part of the price is the eggs it includes, anyone thinking about this definitely GET IT! It rules! So easy and there's nothing better you can feed your fish, will get them some better color right away!

      Great little toys though aren't they? I just love that they can be very simple but effective for the casual hobbyist but more experienced fish keepers can tinker with them and still get some added interest out of them too. Do you need to rinse the brine shrimp or just straight in the tank?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 роки тому

      I just let the water drain out of the scoop back into the hatchery through the gauge in the bottom of it the feed the baby brine shrimp directly to the tank, I don't rinse them.

    this is probably a wee stupid question but when feeding the brine shrimp. Is there any chance of putting too much in? or do the brine shrimp basically swim around till they have been eaten?
    cheers

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 роки тому +1

      They will swim about for a while but they won't last long in fresh water. The fish snap them up pretty quickly. Should any be missed they would die and and decay in the tank but they are so small I can't see it having much impact on the water conditions for the amount you'll be adding.
      You can add them incrementally too. Just add some from the catcher at a time till you're confident on how many you're happy to add to the tank.
      I wouldn't be worrying too much about it if it were me though for the amount being harvested at a time.

    Hows this actually work without a artifical light source? I thought brine shrimp need light to hatch out, this is totally dark inside? Can anyone explain this?

    Is it ok to dump in to the tank right out of this. ( this water has a lot of salt in it )

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  6 місяців тому

      I wouldn't. Not only due to the salt but also for the egg casings and water that has been sitting for a while.

    Any opinion on why "oxygen/aeration" is always recommended, but this device goes against all that.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  2 роки тому +1

      So you don't yet anywhere near the yield with this as you would with other versions so the other ones require the aeration partly due to having so many more shrimp present.
      This hatchery is more for smaller tanks, adding an interesting way of feeding your fish or just the occasional spawn of fry. If you have a full fish room or intend on a regular breeding project you'd be better off with other options.
      Hope that explains it.

    Unique way of hatching brineshrimp. $25.00 in U.S. I still do it the 2 litre bottle way but would love to try this in the future. Thanks for the video.

      You probably get a better yield from the bottle method mate. For the average hobbyist looking for a fun and easy way to feed brine shrimp to a wee tank or two though these are probably a nice wee toy for that.

    Why don't people when they use this disk, which I am going to get for my birthday in Sept., mix the salt water, baking soda before they put it in the hatchery. No one I have seen mixes it first. Why? Is there some reason. It makes sense to me to mix it first, then pour it in!

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 роки тому

      Just because we don't want any egg casings in the middle section. They'll get into the tank when we harvest our baby brine shrimp then and some people say fish can choke on them.
      That's if you're using the pre-mix right enough. Nothing stopping us mixing the water, salt and baking soda, adding that to the hatchery then putting the eggs in. I just try to keep it easy as possible for the average and new aquarists but can always take things to the next level.
      Many happy returns for when your birthday comes. Sounds like you have an ace present on the way.

      The eggs? It's the salt and casings mix I use so that wouldn't work.
      I wash out the hatchery between each use. I've been using it for many months now with great results. Plenty of baby brine shrimp, no smell, no fuss. Think it's great. Unless I've picked you up wrong.

      Daniel Keeping Fish Maybe fish like mollies guppy’s and other estuary fish are good but the continued feeding in some fish can be harmful. Don’t take my word for it. Check it out. I wish I could use something like that. But with the amount of fish and fry I have at any one time I need a five Galen bucket a week of baby and adult feedings.
