The princess in the story was to be married, but only agreed to marry the man who got the answer to her riddle right. Otherwise, he dies. The “forgotten prince” (the character who’d sing this in the opera) gave her a riddle back. What is my name? Answer correctly within a days time & I will turn myself over to you to be killed. If not, we marry. She sends all her guards into the town to find him or someone who knew him to basically intimidate the information out of them, hence “nessun dorma”- no one shall sleep. Until we get the info we need, we will run through this town essentially disturbing everyone’s slumber. Meanwhile, the “forgotten prince” sings this aria, which is essentially a declaration of determination to make him his wife. He will win the wager, because no one recognizes him or knows ones who he is. Basically a bunch of “get ready, woman, you WILL be mine!” 😆

My theory has always been that he went in not being 100% sure he could hit that B4 at the end because this was toward the end of his career and he'd been struggling with his health and his facial expression at the end is him being like "Holy shit! Holy shit! I did it! I still have it in me!"

I was a young Black Kid from The South Bronx, working my way through college. I worked at the box office, and when the shows began we closed, and I could take any empty seat in the hall. Wonderful, Aileen! In the opera Turandot, in this song, this aria, his character is wooing a famous princess who tests each of her suitors by asking them three riddles. If the suitor answers incorrectly he is executed. The singer is awaiting dawn when he will be asked the riddles. He is singing of his love for the princess and vowing that he will win. "I will win!!" is the final line of his song. For him it will be Love or Death. Thank you for sharing this beautiful performance. Pavarotti was truly a special voice. 😊

I believe that he has already correctly answered the three riddles but when the princess still does not want to marry him, he offers her a counter proposal: If she can correctly guess his name before sunrise, he will let her out of the contract. The princess orders all her subjects to work through the night to find the answer and the song conveys that "no one sleeps tonight."

Actually, he already answered all three riddles and got them right. Problem is, the princess still does not want marriage, thus, the character (Love) challenges the princess to guess his real name by dawn. The princess agrees, and does everything she can to get the name, even torturing an innocent servant named Liu. The song is called Nessun Dorma “none shall sleep” for the princess orders all of the nation that none shall sleep until she determines Love’s real name, lest the citizens be executed. If you read the lyrics, Pavarotti sings “my secret is hidden within me, but it shall be uttered upon your lips (a kiss)” , he stops singing and the opera sings “no one knows his name, thus we will all die.” Amidst their singing and their depressed tones in the aria, Pavarotti (the character Love) silences it all and commands night to vanish and for the stars to set, because victory shall be his by dawn. The song perfectly evokes what all the characters are going through, even the princess as at the start he sings “Nessun Dorma (none shall sleep), even you Princess.”
It’s a beautiful song from an iconic opera, and Luciano Pavarotti did it the best by far. Rest in peace to the greatest tenor the world has been blessed to bear. ❤

'Nessum Dorma' --- the opera song performed last night at the RNC Convention after President Donald Trump's speech. This song was also played at the end of the 2002 movie "The Sum of All Fears" (Tom Clancy novel) when the good guys were "taking out the trash". As an FYI, the opera 'Nessum Dorma' translates to "None Shall Sleep". It's a song about overcoming obstacles and achieving victory. In the opera, the main character 'Calaf' boldly declares that no one will sleep that night since he's very determined to solve 3 complex riddles in order to win the love of a princess. Calaf also declares that he will win...he will overcome all obstacles. The song was also performed by Luciano Pavarotti at the opening ceremony of the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
But my favorite rendition of the song is definitely from the 2002 movie, "The Sum of All Fears" as the bad guys who conspired to use false flag attacks as a pretext to start World War 3, are all eliminated. 😎

The song's words are the following: Nessun dorma
    Nessun dorma
    Tu pure, o Principessa
    Nella tua fredda stanza
    Guardi le stelle
    Che tremano d'amore
    E di speranza
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
Il nome mio nessun saprà, no, no
    Sulla tua bocca lo dirò
    Quando la luce splenderà
    Ed il mio bacio scioglierà
Il silenzio che ti fa mia
    (Il nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir, morir)
    Dilegua, o notte
    Tramontate, stelle
    Tramontate, stelle
    All'alba vincerò
    Vincerò
    Vincerò
    No one sleeps
    You too, oh Princess
    In your cold room
    You look at the stars
    That tremble with love
    And with hope
But my mystery is locked inside me
No one will know my name, no, no
On your lips I will say it
    When the light shines
    And my kiss will dissolve
The silence that makes you mine
(No one will know his name
And we must, alas, die, die)
    Disappear, oh night
    Set, stars
    Set, stars
    At dawn I will win
    I will win
    I will win

Classical music is amazing, when i was young i could not care less about it, but over the years/decades my mind has completely changed on that.
For me, music has to take you on a journey, tell a meaningful story and bring out the emotions that go with the story, this is why i love bands like Nightwish today, but that love stems from my love for classical performances, the vocalists, the instrumentals, the story telling... it's absolutely first class to me, and therefor... a big fan of Pavarotti as well, obviously.

Very important, I think, to note that you're hearing the work of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (1858- 1924). He was a master of writing music (a practitioner of operatic realism) which drew emotional responses from audiences. Listen to "Un bel di" (facing loss of love) from Madama Butterly, "O mio babbino caro," (extreme behavior [comic]) from Gianni Schicchi, "Mi chiamano Mimi" (fragile beautiful Mimi) and "O soave fanciulla" (declarations of mutual love) from La Boheme. Along with "Nessun Dorma," they represent some of classical opera's greatest hits.
    Aileen, do more opera reactions!

Luciano was one of the greatest tenors of all time and he also did several opera/jazz cross over collabs. The aria „Nessun Dorma“ from Puccini‘s opera Turandot is one of his most famous performances. This was recorded on the mid nineties in a concert of „The three tenors“, where he sang with his fellow colleagues Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. The „vincero“-climax („I will win“) is one of the most famous pieces of opera.

I'm not into opera but was blown away by Pavarotti so much over a decade ago that I had to look more into it. After hearing him sing with Joan Sutherland the song "Parigi O cara" I had to look up the words and printed them out so I could sing along. I like the rhythm of that song. But for favorite video of him is with Bryan Adams singing "o solo mio". I can't help but smile the whole way though as Bryan has a kick butt voice but doesn't compare to Pavarotti and struggles a little, yet has a great time.

  • @ikshields
    @ikshields 3 місяці тому +3

And this is what he could do, just pulling the aria out of his pocket, out of context, at a gala concert. He could literally just deliver it on cue.
That’s not being struck by lightning - that would be too facile. It’s not a special once-in-a-lifetime high point - he did this on any average evening, for decades. This is finely-honed, relentlessly practiced, supreme mastery.
This is the real lesson of the greatest artists of all kinds, and it’s so often lost on audiences so fixated on “emotion”, “talent”, and other magical impressions: this is the result of WORK.
With that in mind, the great ones can be appreciated as something far more impressive than just some lightning rod on legs.

When I was little music was one of my first loves and i did two things that wowed family and friends. I would reenact the conductor from Fantasia and imitate Pavarotti's singing. My parents especially my Father got me started early on great music. From BB King and Muddy Waters with the Blues, to Bach and Beethoven in Classical, and Pavarotti with opera. Nessun Dorma out of many amazing songs performed by Pavarotti was always his best, the power of his delivery was something. When I was in middle school we went on a field trip to the Met to hear Pavarotti sing at a dress rehearsal performance, that was a real treat. And kindness and good was always easy to see in Pavarotti's face which made it even easier to be a fan of his. Imagine the music being made by all the greats in heaven such as him..

One of the BEST performances ever! I know many will say RIP to the GREAT Luciano. But he isn't able to do that. God gas him on contract for the next 100 years to teach the Angels how to sing more powerfully.
    A bit of geekdom here.
This part of the performance is a little over 3 minutes long. That standing ovation you see start happening. THAT LASTED 20+ MINUTES!!! Yeah, nearly 7 times longer than the performance clapping. The Great Luciano (his official nickname) is just Devine

This is from Puccini's Opera. It's the story of a princess who refuses to be married. To discourage men pursuing her she states that anyone wanting her must answer 3 riddles, but anyone that tries and fails is beheaded. She kills many many men until Pavarotti's character comes along. He's loved her for very long and he successfully answers the riddles anonymously. She's absolutely furious and announces that no one is allowed to sleep that night until he is found and brought to her so that she could kill him. If they don’t find him, they will all be put to death. That’s why the chorus comes in to say they feel they will all die.
This song is him somewhat mocking her "Nesun Dorma" = "none shall sleep" and announcing that he will win. The last two lines that were very powerful actually mean "I will win".
    Gorgeous opera and breathtaking song.

So glad you finally got to experience the best tenor to ever grace the stage. This is an aria from the opera Turandot. It’s essentially the “forgotten prince’s” declaration of love for the coveted princess (different royal family lol) & his determination to have her for his wife. If I may be so bold, I’d like to suggest you also check out (even if you don’t release reaction videos for them) “la Donna e mobile”, “funiculi funicula”, “Caruso” & my personal favorite, “o sole mio”. One of the greatest love songs ever written. It was my grandmother’s favorite as well. It’s the one she showed me that turned me onto the maestro in the first place. Regardless, thanks for putting this one out. Have a great day!

If you can, go to an Operahouse and enjoy maybe a Verdi opera. I love it the same as when I go to a rock concert, even been to an opera and to a Rush concert in one week (yes I am CRAZY haha). The symphonic orchestra alone will make you tear up. It's something everyone should experience, though my 1st opera was when I was about 40. Maybe it's not for MOST young people, but then again I saw oldtimers above 70 in a Status Quo concert here in Germany. That proves music is ageless...Enjoy!

Nessun Dorma (meaning none shall sleep in English) is an aria from the Puccini opera Turandot. Don't worry about your pronunciation (unless you're Italian, then I guess you can be picky), I think you did ok, and being Mexican and I'm sure speaking Spanish, a sister language to Italian, I'm sure you did better than most of us English only speakers.
Reading some of your comments I see some people saying things like he was one of the best tenors of his day, this is incorrect. He was, and still is, the best tenor of all time. He performed during the Italia 90 FIFA World Cup as part of the Three Tenors along with José Carreras and Placido Domingo, returning to perform at the next World Cup in the US in 94, playing to sold out crowds in LA I believe and achieving popular worldwide fame (he was already famous to any opera fans, of course).
Here in the UK, I think I'm right in saying, this was used as part of the BBC World Cup Italia 90 coverage and gained so much fame that it was released as a single reaching number 2 on the UK singles chart, something that I'm not sure any other opera aria has ever done before or since.
Great reaction and I don't think anyone who loves music can do anything but get emotional when hearing this song. I wasn't surprised you'd love this knowing your love of music. It was amazing to see you so captivated watching it. Keep up the good work and will catch you next time!!!

Apparently this is the english translation..
    None shall sleep,
    None shall sleep!
    Even you, oh Princess,
    In your cold room,
    Watch the stars,
    That tremble with love
    And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
    No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
    When the light shines.
    And my kiss will dissolve
the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name
    and we must, alas, die.)
    Vanish, o night!
    Set, stars! Set, stars!
    At dawn, I will win!
    I will win!
    I will win!

    Wikipedia:
Luciano Pavarotti was born in 1935. After abandoning the dream of becoming a football goalkeeper, Pavarotti spent seven years in vocal training.
This is from Turandot an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. Puccini left the opera unfinished at the time of his death in 1924; it premiered in 1926 after the music was posthumously completed by Franco Alfano. The opera is set in China.

I'm no opera fan and know nothing about it but Pavarotti is my all time favorite male singer. The guy was simply amazing. Years ago PBS used to show a Christmas special he did in I think Montreal Canada. It was just unbelievable. Every year I still look to see if it will be shown that year, unfortunately I haven't seen it in maybe 15 years or so. Rest In Peace Luciano Pavarotti

The song is from a classical opera, but it's basically his now and forever. It brought him to the mainstream when he sang it at the World Cup in Italy in 1990, and I'd say it was his signature song. And boy, did he live. The documentary Pavarotti, directed by Ron Howard, will give you a great insight into his life and craft.

He is singing Turandot's victorious piece, full of power and passion! And you can see how much he's in character, almost exploding with power, passion and pride! Just amazing
