I act stupid while trying to be funny (I don't even know what I'm trying to be actually). I identify myself as nice, because other people told me I am, and I'm told that I'm funny, but I refuse to believe that. I would really like to see tho what I act like, and what other people think about me as being not me, since I can't read thaughts.
My bottom jaw is off center slightly to the right. In the mirror, my face looks perfectly symmetrical, but in photos, I think, "Holy shit, my face is bent!" Lol
I feel like most people are better looking in person than pictures or even videos. I’ve seen people look amazing but soon as you pull out the camera it doesn’t look the same. It gives me hope that the same goes for me. 🙂
I hope that’s true also. I think it is because Ive seen people who are not very good looking in real life but very photogenic! And good looking in real life but not as good looking in pictures. I also hope I look better in real life 😂
I beleive in the mirror. If you comb your hair to the right, turn around, you're still combing it to the right. Idk if it's a good example but, I don't believe our eyes can flip us.
I don't believe I do. I scrutinize every flaw and there are many. Do I think I'm some sort of swamp creature? No but I don't believe I'm anything remotely close to a beauty queen.
So basically when we look at ourselves, we see every. Tiny. Flaw. And we automatically think that people see it too. But look at your friends for example. You don't see every. Little. Flaw. So they don't in you either.
I think people don’t really pay attention as much as we think they do, the fact not many see your scar just goes to show they aren’t paying that much attention to your face. I think we get hyper sensitive. My partner always thinks I’m looking and judging his eyebrows but it’s like I’m looking in that area but not even aware of it im just paying attention to what he’s talking about. It’s interesting,
What?! I genuinely thought I was the only one that thought I look better in the mirror than in photos! This is beyond bizarre to me that this video came on my feed considering I was literally just thinking about this yesterday !!
Lenses have distortion and the further you are away from the camera lens, the less distortion or fish eye effect on your face. When you're too close to the lens it can make your nose and center of the face look large and is almost never flattering. When you take a Photo in the mirror it actually doubles the distance between you and the lens, eliminating the lens distortion. Distance is from lens to mirror, then mirror to you. So if you are standing 4 feet away from mirror, camera is taking a photo of you 8 perceptual feet away.
garden addict I always think I have a big nose because of selfies, but whenever I see pictures of myself or look in the mirror I don't. It was an insecurity for a while and this helped me realize it's most likely because of the lens
Ashley Vedas aww I'm glad this helped. You'd be shocked what good and bad lighting can emphasize as well.. ill see if I can find this one really helpful instructional lighting video I saw a while back, it's intended to help you find the most flattering lighting but it opened my eyes so much
I’ll never forget the day I realized my face was assymetrical. I was crushed. Not only is it assymetical, but my nose is pretty crooked to the point where it looks like I have previously broken it. For years it bugged me..I hated how I had to be shocked every time I saw a picture of myself lol with everything being out of place....but then one day, I saw my friends reflection in the mirror. Her face looked whack, kind of like mine looks in pictures. Then I realized, this gorgeous friend of mine has a face more assymetrical than mine, and I didn’t even notice!!! I only noticed it in the mirror because that’s reverse of what I see day to day! That goes to show, it’s really not as bad as you think it is!
Well technically no. If she looks worse in mirrors then that means she looks better in pictures. And the pictures show what you look in real life. So she doesn't have an asymmetrical face...
i look normal and dont care to try too hard. however am very grateful for 2 arms, 2 legs and a generally functioning body, its great! if you are overly critical of your appearance - dont work on your body, work on your soul....
Very nice comment, that’s something I’ve been realizing for the past few days, almost no one is thankful for what they have and that’s including me sadly ;(
I am the most un-photogenic person i know, but yet when i look in the mirror i think 'ok I'm looking decent today' , then whammy ..... I see a picture of myself and it looks like i just had an organ transplant and my body is rejecting it !
maryann HT I hear ya, but I'm pretty sure I get the prize for most unphotogenic human ever. Especially if I don't know I'm being photographed. My friends look beautiful even when caught talking, then there's me, mouth wide open, double chin, expression like I'm outraged and in pain all at once. 😣
This is why I hate taking pictures of myself, I think I look awesome in the mirror and then I take a picture and I look like trash and it makes me feel bad about myself so I rather just be happy with what I see in the mirror
aqua fina that's because when you take pictures of yourself, you have control over the camera, and your posing and "fixing" your face the way you want to see it. When someone else takes the photo, you are losing that control. This applies to mirrors as well, but with a flipped image.
Mirrors are more realistic. Some people that are unphotogenic and some are photogenic which is why you cant trust photos. People find you 20% more attractive than they do in real life. A mirror is a 3D version of yourself whilst a photo is a 2D version of yourself.
1.We dont really see in 3d,that as an overly simplified statement. 2.We see ourselves better in the mirror because we are so used to seeing ourselves in the mirror that we got used to the assymetries, and then when we see a photo of us unmirrored the assymetries are accentuated ,to us only,so pretty much how people see you normally is how you see yourself in the mirror and vice versa. 3.Camera lens angle, there aren t photogenic people, its just that the lens of the cameras that people use to take photos and selfies is telephoto and your eyes see in a wider angle thats why people might look better or worse in cameras.
Also people forget that your eyes are way more advanced then a camera or video recorder can ever be at capturing things in motion so the likelihood that you think you look better in a mirror as apposed to a camera is probably for a reason
Yes, in the mirror I look the bees knees, in every photo, I have a droopy eyelid, crooked teeth, a wonky face like I’m having a stroke, my hair is always uneven on one side. Which one is true, please don’t tell me it’s the photo one!
basically it's just because you're used to seeing yourself in the mirror which shows your face flipped so when you see the pictures, your eyes are not used to seeing your face flipped the other way which is why everything looks weird and extra asymmetrical. However, when other people see you, they're used to seeing your face in the same way it's shown in the pictures so it doesn't look abnormal to them like how it does to you if you get what I mean.
@AyshaPlays :3 But when I take a selfie my nose looks normal , but when anybody else takes my pic from back camera then it's looks very crooked , so I don't know how do I look in real , most of them I asked they say that my nose is crooked , like you share your opinion with your sister
@@shesana8808 same see my face iam handsome in dp 😂😂 but if i use back camera my own soul say iam ugly my nose is big 😢 i have fat at tip of nose right nostril too
Maria B I think neither one is right. The camera isn't right because we are not moving and it catches only a split second, the miŕror isn't right because the sides are switched. So i think a video would reveal the "truth" - but people (to me) look in pictures like they do in real life, although they sometimes are caught in an unflattering way, and I think it is true that some people are more photogenic then others.
So would we like our selfies better if we flipped them to match what we see in the mirror? I mean it probably also has to do with the the fact that the camera is turning a 3D object into a 2D object so the depth, light, and shadows are different. Just changing the way shadows hit your face can completely change the appearance of your face too.
Because you are used to seeing her in real life (so thats not unfamiliar to you), but for her is the opposite because she is more familiar with the mirror picture of her.
A Person Nothing was flipped for me. It’s bc of the camera lenses. My dog even looks way different in the camera then what I see her. I don’t think u want to admit cus u think u look better in the camera🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ I will no longer keep responding to u cuz I’m wasting my time.
Sometimes I wonder: What if, somehow, I forgot what I looked like (amnesia, hypnosis, memory erasing ray gun) and was shown a photo of myself? How attractive would I think that person was?
I'm not photogenic at all, lol I look better in person than in pictures, and I've seen people that look great in pictures but in person, not as good as in the pictures. Oh well, we are not dolls, we are humans and unique in our own way and that makes us beautiful !
I was just talking to my husband the last week about this, why I never look that good in pictures? when i can see myself in the mirror looking pretty 😂
I'm not so sure we don't appear to others the way we appear in the mirror. I say this because I've seen other people in the mirror and they look the same to me face to face.
I’m literally so happy I’m not the only one who had been going crazy about the whole looking better in the mirror than camera thing. And so happy you made a video on thisss!
I don't need to crop my pics to know my face ain't equal. The left side could do cat walks and campaign ads. She loves a good up-do, so she shines center stage. The right side works camera crew, feels most comfortable behind the curtains, under a side swept part.
I think if you take a picture of yourself, flip it, you still wont like it. Cameras compress reality onto a 2D plane and can only show a limited dynamic range of highlight/shadow, making shadows deeper and uglier while highlights look harsher and reveal more unflattering texture. Also when all the details are flattened onto a 2D plane, frozen in time, all the flaws stand out much more. Also there's lens distortion. Finally when we look at ourselves in a mirror we tend to rotate our faces to look the most flattering and make an appealing expression. As we look at the reflection, we can fine tune it. When soemoene else is taking the picture, we lose that control. So basically I don't think it's as simple as the flipped version looking less flattering. The only way seeing the flip will show the assymetry is if you are comparing it to the unflipped. Our brains auto correct symmetry, so we wouldn't really notice it unless we're comparing back and forth between the two. Interesting video btw. I'm a digital retoucher who spends hours making people look like they perceive themselves in real life in photos. Cameras DO NOT capture reality. Mirrors do (except the flip, which our brains don't even notice). One more thing: a skilled photographer can make you look MORE attractive in photos than you look in the mirror, because they know how to capture appealing highlight/shadow shapes, make the lens distortion work in a way that's appealing, control the quality of light to be soft, and capture an angle that highlights your beauty while hides your flaws. If it were as simple as "flipped and frozen in time = uglier", then amazing photographers wouldn't exist. Even without post processing, a genius photographer can make you look incredible in photos.
The reason models always look so gorgeous depends on the type of image. If you're talking about the models you see in advertisements in magazines, then they look gorgeous for many reasons; 1. The models are generally very attractive people (with high symmetry). Sometimes models are people who look better in photos than they look in person (due to the way their features cast shadows and highlights, and the way their features look when flattened onto a 2D plane) 2. The ads you see that use models are the result of a large team of creatives collaborating to create an image designed to be visually arresting so it'll grab attention and sell product. 3. Before the photo is taken, designers and photographers pre-visualize and plan the image (the clothes/lighting/makeup/hair/location/angle), all contribute to a cohesive polished image that elicits an emotional response from the consumer 5. The model can sit for 30 min to 2 hours (sometimes more) getting their makeup applied and hair styled by industry pros 6. The lighting is carefully planned by the photographer to create sleek, visually appealing shadow/highlight shapes, then exposes the image to capture the most attractive dynamic range for the shot. 7. The highly skilled photographer directs the model to get a pose/angle that reads well on film (the models in magazines are also skilled at knowing how to pose in a way that's flattering to their features) 8. The makeup/hair stylist are constantly monitoring the model, ready to touch up the makeup and keep the hair perfect 9. Finally the best of the hundreds of images selected by the editor/advertising executives and is given to a professional retoucher, who takes the already beautiful shadows/highlights and further sculpts them, cleans the composition of the image (making it free from any distracting details), sometimes paints in additional details like eyelashes/lip gloss highlights, color corrects and styles the color if necessary, sharpens the areas of interest, and crops the image in a way that's visually pleasing. This post processing can take upwards of ten hours for a single beauty image. 10. The image is then sent for approval, sometimes being returned to the retoucher for further adjustments. It's best to view images like high end makeup and clothes advertisements as works of art instead of photos of a person. They're collaborative efforts by many of the top artists of their field. Hybrid paintings. If you're talking about pictures of models that you'd see on instagram, those are more due to the natural beauty/symmetry of the model and her skill in knowing how to pose with flattering lighting so the final image is pleasing when viewed on a 2D plane. (also most instagram models retouch their images) If you see a snapshot of a model, like taken by paparazzi, then you can count that the model looks much more beautiful in the mirror that she appears in the candid shot. Hope that answers your question lol. Fuck I'm wordy
If you watch America's Next top model, you will be amazed at how different the models look in "real life" and in the beauty shots. It's crazy. Before pic=pretty girl, After pic=gorgeous girl
I think I look ugly in both mirror and photos. Actually when taking a picture it looks so much worse 😅, but I've been told that in person I'm pretty and in my pictures I look different. Which it's basically people saying "hey you look horrible in pictures, but you look nice in person" I avoid the mirror and taking photos at all costs.
I did a whole independent study on this (not an actual one, just basically looking things up because i was curious LMAO) because I had a whole crisis about it. It has to do with a lot of factors! First of all, yes you are right about us being flipped. The science is called the Mere exposure affect. Like you said, we get so used to seeing ourselves in the mirror that seeing ourself any other way looks strange to us. Another factor is the lens of a camera. It is bowed out, and there is only one lens. Though cameras have advanced, there is still only one lens, and this is a huge deal when considering depth, as a camera can only capture an interpretation of depth within a flattened image. This is very different from the complex human vision - we obviously have 2 lenses, and are taking in billions of perceptions per second. They can register depth so much better. Phone cameras are much worse at this than professional cameras, but STILL, judging your attractiveness off of ANY photo or video is not a good idea, because it's not very accurate at all. I think that the best way I've tested this is being in a public bathroom with a friend. If I look at them in the mirror while they are facing the mirror, they look the same to me (maybe even slightly worse. Again, mere exposure affect. We are used to seeing them one way) as they would if I were looking directly at their face (no mirror). I have summed this up to the fact that we must look the same or worse to ourselves as we do other people (not taking in account our own feelings of ourselves, as you said). And this is a good thing! It means we are more attractive to others. We also tend to notice and scrutinize our own inconsistencies more than we do other peoples'. One of my best friends is always saying how asymmetrical her face is, and I think she has a super symmetrical face. We spend the most time with our own selves, so it only makes sense.
What's really um, "enlightening" is when you're walking in a store, catch your reflection in a full length mirror, not realizing at first the reflection is you. Fairly alarming the judgements made in those first few seconds... when you see yourself as "other". 😂
I’m 38 and still trying to learn to love my self.. I pick myself apart it’s crazy. Especially now days with all the social media. With all the perfect looking girls. Which I know their not perfect. It is hard. I have 3 daughters and let them know that they are perfect and beautiful and smart.
Djlullaby22 Authentic probably what was meant. Be authentic and genuine. I heard a good way to hear what you sound like to other people, is to cup your hands behind each ear. Lot of women have low self esteem and try to be people pleasers because that is how we are raised. When confidence is what is attractive to real men.
My face is soooo asymmetrical, and yet my friends can’t see it nor have I told them about it. My right side of my face is higher than my left side, and it really bothers me
Namjoon’s rejected handshake ;same😭 everytime somebody asks to take a picture of me or takes one without me noticing i srsly wanna cry when i see it cuz my face looks sosososo wonky and ppl say that they don’t notice it but i can’t tell if they’re saying that bc it’s true or bc they feel bad . i’m rly insecure abt it but i’m not sure how or if i can correct it cuz i wanna have symmetrical faces like my friends who look amazing in back-camera pictures. i typed a lot here but i feel better knowing it’s not just me :/
Appreciate and STAN VICTON- btstrash same my face looks better flipped In the mirror and in cameras it flips it the other way and I look bad because I’m so asymmetrical
You are not alone. Same. Like I always take pictures from my left side because it looks better (it’s sharper and the other side is more like tall and small and just weird) but when I take front pictures it’s a mess bc it looks so asymmetrical. So yeah, you are not alone
As my Nana use to say, honey, it's easier to age when you're ugly, it's the beautiful people who can't handle their aesthetic demise that comes with time. In other words, be kind to the ugly people, you will be one, one day if you're lucky enough.
I think also phone cameras can really distort your face. My nose always looks really wide and at a certain angle my forehead looks larger. Btw I like your voice Lou. You sound a bit like Julia Roberts to me!
problemchild1187 100% same. I actually took a selfie normally and another through my mirror, and in the mirror picture, my forehead looks significantly shorter. In selfies, it looks like I have a 5-head when I really don't lol
phone cameras have really tiny lenses that also are designed to give wide angles of view. the result is distortion. some of that is corrected in-camera but the resulting image will still suffer. look at 'normal' camera lenses that are wide-angle, they're huge.
It’s because you are used to seeing your flipped face with a degree of asymmetry, that when you see it flipped again it is confusing and you think you look worse because things are out of place. In reality, other people see you the exact same, that’s why when you see someone in real life and look at them through a mirror you don’t think they look any different.
Jack warr wait so when I see my myself in the mirror, others see that image but just flipped? If so then I don’t look as disgusting and ugly as I thought I did...
wait, so the way i see myself in the mirror is how others see me? i have done research it says that other people see my face the other way, not how it looks it the mirror. im confused, i hope the way i see myself in the mirror is how others see me irl. can someone confirm this is correct? NOT TRYING TO SOUND LIKE A KAREN IF I SOUNDED LIKE ONE IM JUST CONFUSED!
A camera has one lens and gives a flat view of your face. When you look into a mirror you are viewing your face slightly different through both eyes and the combined image is what we perceive we look like. At least thats what I think.
Very true. Camera has one lens with distortion. Viewing in a mirror you are looking at an image with 2 eyes giving you depth perception and no distortion, however it's a reverse image.
@@rahma8070 yes you do look more like the mirror because phone cameras always distort your face but the mirror isn’t 100% what you look like probably 80% of the mirror is what you look like
I have a pretty long face and phone cameras make my face look longer, this has to do with the short focal length of phone cameras (very wide angle). I hate my face in phone camera pictures!
I have a long face and I’ve always wondered why it looks so much more oval shaped in pics! Thanks for that tidbit😊 I always knew there was a reason to hate off guard photos haha
I found a way you could see yourself the way people see you, if you get a smaller mirror and put it next to another side by side. Look at yourself from the bigger mirror and you’ll notice how different you are than how you perceive yourself. It’s insane lol.
Just Chilin Same, I wonder if people who have had, “out of body experiences” know what they look like.. I wish I knew what I look like. But I also don’t, I think I’m unattractive in a mirror half the time too.😭
Haley Troxell ummmmm nooo idiot the mirror is the reflection of you. Thats not how people look at you! Take a picture and thats the real you and thats how people will look in you in front of you!!!
But how do people actually see you? They see how you see yourself in the mirror or do they see you how you look in a picture? That’s what I’m really curious about
My Beloved they see us as we see ourselves in the mirror. For example you've got pimple on right cheek but people would see pimple on left cheek because they're in front of you
Its like everything in life if you train you get better at it, Ppl say I look good in photos and yeah I kinda think so too I kinda have a photo face or standard pose using My good side and standard smile, Ive learned what worked as mom took a lot of pictures of us and demanded us to look at the camera, if you are used to it its more likely to succeed and act natural so you train by take lots of photos and figure out what works for you.
I think we're too hard on ourselves in pics. I can have someone say, "You look good in that picture," and I'll be like, "You need to put your glasses on because I totally disagree."
I'm a graphic designer and I used to feel that retouching photos was inauthentic. But when we look at one another, our brains filter out some of the "perceived" imperfections. So a still image has to be altered to match that. So, there's that.
"I wish we all concentrated a little more on what's on the inside" First of all . . . I feel like I'm ugly on the inside too😭 She funny tho I like her😂
When looking in a mirror, I find that I brace myself, open my eyes wider and lift my chin to lessen any double chin action. I wish I could do that in photos.
Could you explain why in different lighting we look so different? In some lighting when I am looking in a mirror I look really good but then in other lighting like Walmart bathrooms with fluorescent lighting I look ugly and I can not tell which one resembles me the most.
It is pretty simple. It is all about shadows and highlights. In good lighting or "natural light" , there should be even level of light across your face. In a badly lit room, shadows will cast upon your face and will often make you look haggard.
Lighting has lots to do with it...I just commented on that and then read your comment. Fluorescent lighting is the worse. That’s why people often look terrible in wal-mart, but go to a high end store, especially the makeup counters and the lighting is warmer and you look so much better. Candlelight is very flattering, lol
Take two mirrors . One smaller than the other. Put the small mirror on the bigger one on a side so you can see from both mirrors. This is how you look in real life.
Thanks for the interesting subject matter & your beautifully subtle humour. Touching on the subject of self-perception; my daughter lives in Melbourne, Australia and she used to work at the Woolworths Supermarket at Southern Cross station. When I was visiting her she took me into the women's public bathroom located outside the store to show me the mirror. She claimed that it made you look wonderful because of the tint & the lighting. She was right. I've always been incredibly critical of my appearance & I have a phobia about having my picture taken or seeing one of myself or even knowing that there's one somewhere out there in floating around in the ether. But when I looked into that mirror I have to admit that I quite liked the look of the woman staring back at me. My daughter confessed that if she was having a low self-esteem day & felt unattractive she would pop into the bathroom just to look in the mirror for a confidence boost and I can see why it would work if you kept the image that was staring back at you in your head for the day. It's interesting how things like that work.
The difference between myself in pictures/videos and mirrors is bigger than just symmetry and sides. I literally look way different and uglier from head to toe. :( I look way fatter and my face features look like a different person. I end up looking masculine and fuller.
Read a lot of articles, had an issue with that mirror-picture-reality thing... One thing I learned- don't trust the articles, don't trust the internet. My perspective and lesson learned is that probably you/me/we look to other people the way we appear to ourselves in the mirrors. So, the beautiful version. Don't worry about looking ugly to other people. It's probably a complexed brain thing, maybe the brain reverses things and shows you to yourself the way it's supposed to be. Remember, we are smart, intelligent ,complexed beings. Don't worry about your voice in the videos either. It's only weird to you, and no, you do not sound that ugly. So just be confident. And happy. You are beautiful. I've really had an issue with that. I've learned there's no reason for it. Pictures may not appear good all the time, but in reality it's all better and good. Cause cameras are not perfect, they are made by humans. Our brains are way more complexed. Lots of love
ok but I have a really low self esteem and I am still shocked each time I see a reflection of myself because I kinda never seem to realize how ugly I really am until I see it
i’m sure you’ll never see this comment but i just wanna say, i have extremely bad confidence in myself due to being called “ugly” all my life. it’s screwing up a lot, rarely got any compliments throughout my journey. But Watching this video gives me hope. Much appreciated.

That is so true!!!

Becky MyHearteu my whole face is a flaw...👹
I think people don’t really pay attention as much as we think they do, the fact not many see your scar just goes to show they aren’t paying that much attention to your face. I think we get hyper sensitive. My partner always thinks I’m looking and judging his eyebrows but it’s like I’m looking in that area but not even aware of it im just paying attention to what he’s talking about. It’s interesting,
yup but I still wish that all my flaws could be hidden

So if you are standing 4 feet away from mirror, camera is taking a photo of you 8 perceptual feet away.
garden addict That's interesting to know!
garden addict I always think I have a big nose because of selfies, but whenever I see pictures of myself or look in the mirror I don't. It was an insecurity for a while and this helped me realize it's most likely because of the lens
Ashley Vedas aww I'm glad this helped. You'd be shocked what good and bad lighting can emphasize as well.. ill see if I can find this one really helpful instructional lighting video I saw a while back, it's intended to help you find the most flattering lighting but it opened my eyes so much
garden addict thank you :)
Thank you! I always wondered why my nose grows by seemingly 10-20 percent on a closeup picture.
Skysurfer 777 the same 😔💔
Well technically no. If she looks worse in mirrors then that means she looks better in pictures. And the pictures show what you look in real life. So she doesn't have an asymmetrical face...

Mirrors are more realistic.
Some people that are unphotogenic and some are photogenic which is why you cant trust photos.
People find you 20% more attractive than they do in real life.
A mirror is a 3D version of yourself whilst a photo is a 2D version of yourself.
NEEDED THIS
1.We dont really see in 3d,that as an overly simplified statement.
I needed this so bad and I’m just gonna believe this is true
Also people forget that your eyes are way more advanced then a camera or video recorder can ever be at capturing things in motion so the likelihood that you think you look better in a mirror as apposed to a camera is probably for a reason
Eyes also see you in 3d that means the brain Will remove the imperfections!
Yes, in the mirror I look the bees knees, in every photo, I have a droopy eyelid, crooked teeth, a wonky face like I’m having a stroke, my hair is always uneven on one side. Which one is true, please don’t tell me it’s the photo one!
Same loool
Lmaooo
Yeah I feel u😖
basically it's just because you're used to seeing yourself in the mirror which shows your face flipped so when you see the pictures, your eyes are not used to seeing your face flipped the other way which is why everything looks weird and extra asymmetrical. However, when other people see you, they're used to seeing your face in the same way it's shown in the pictures so it doesn't look abnormal to them like how it does to you if you get what I mean.

Maybe ppl overestimate their attractiveness in the pictures because in our minds we are comparing them to what we see in the mirror
Thought the same, i really think that this is the reason!
It's probably just because we don't feel like it looks like us. When I see my friends in the mirror, I think they look super weird.
Marni Zavaleta, Obviously. But which is right - the camera or the mirror?
Maria B I think neither one is right. The camera isn't right because we are not moving and it catches only a split second, the miŕror isn't right because the sides are switched. So i think a video would reveal the "truth" - but people (to me) look in pictures like they do in real life, although they sometimes are caught in an unflattering way, and I think it is true that some people are more photogenic then others.
So would we like our selfies better if we flipped them to match what we see in the mirror? I mean it probably also has to do with the the fact that the camera is turning a 3D object into a 2D object so the depth, light, and shadows are different. Just changing the way shadows hit your face can completely change the appearance of your face too.
once i saw my friend looking in a mirror and she looked way more attractive irl than the mirror showed. so, have hope
Because you are used to seeing her in real life (so thats not unfamiliar to you), but for her is the opposite because she is more familiar with the mirror picture of her.

Sometimes I wonder: What if, somehow, I forgot what I looked like (amnesia, hypnosis, memory erasing ray gun) and was shown a photo of myself? How attractive would I think that person was?
Then you probably won't see all the tiny imperfections that you see on yourself now
You'd probably see yourself pretty attractive considering you won't see your imperfection

Lmao!
So corny😂
Even without post processing, a genius photographer can make you look incredible in photos.
mikedimples thanks for this !
mikedimples WoW really interesting! That explains why models look almost always so gorgeous in pics?
The reason models always look so gorgeous depends on the type of image. If you're talking about the models you see in advertisements in magazines, then
they look gorgeous for many reasons;
1. The models are generally very attractive people (with high symmetry). Sometimes models are people who look better in photos than they look in person (due to the way their features cast shadows and highlights, and the way their features look when flattened onto a 2D plane)
2. The ads you see that use models are the result of a large team of creatives collaborating to create an image designed to be visually arresting so it'll grab attention and sell product.
3. Before the photo is taken, designers and photographers pre-visualize and plan the image (the clothes/lighting/makeup/hair/location/angle), all contribute to a cohesive polished image that elicits an emotional response from the consumer
5. The model can sit for 30 min to 2 hours (sometimes more) getting their makeup applied and hair styled by industry pros
6. The lighting is carefully planned by the photographer to create sleek, visually appealing shadow/highlight shapes, then exposes the image to capture the most attractive dynamic range for the shot.
7. The highly skilled photographer directs the model to get a pose/angle that reads well on film (the models in magazines are also skilled at knowing how to pose in a way that's flattering to their features)
8. The makeup/hair stylist are constantly monitoring the model, ready to touch up the makeup and keep the hair perfect
(also most instagram models retouch their images)
If you see a snapshot of a model, like taken by paparazzi, then you can count that the model looks much more beautiful in the mirror that she appears in the candid shot.
Hope that answers your question lol. Fuck I'm wordy
If you watch America's Next top model, you will be amazed at how different the models look in "real life" and in the beauty shots. It's crazy. Before pic=pretty girl, After pic=gorgeous girl
mikedimples wow....awesome. makes me feel better being as I HATE seeing a picture of myself!!
this lady is just WOW! she looks absolutely gorgeous!
Yeah I totally hate taking photos because I look horrible, so I always tried avoiding it
I did a whole independent study on this (not an actual one, just basically looking things up because i was curious LMAO) because I had a whole crisis about it.

It’s sad when you look in the mirror and feel good then take a picture of yourself on your phone and look like Sloth from the Goonies

90xo Erin Brockovich vibes!
She does sound like Julia! Whoaaaa
90xo yes I feel like my forehead is much higher through my phone but when I look in the mirror it looks normal or shorter
problemchild1187 100% same.

A camera has one lens and gives a flat view of your face. When you look into a mirror you are viewing your face slightly different through both eyes and the combined image is what we perceive we look like. At least thats what I think.
Matthew Abrahams yesss
Very true. Camera has one lens with distortion. Viewing in a mirror you are looking at an image with 2 eyes giving you depth perception and no distortion, however it's a reverse image.
so how do we actually look do we actually look like what the mirror shows us 😭
@@rahma8070 yes you do look more like the mirror because phone cameras always distort your face but the mirror isn’t 100% what you look like probably 80% of the mirror is what you look like

I agree with you... Cherry.
Instead of trying to fit in the world parameters Phebe make the world fit in her parameters... Fu*** ng genius!!!
The pictures of yourself that you delete are the real you
khayelihle mseleku LoL!!!
😂😂😂
khayelihle mseleku i hate you for this
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😢
demit
But how do people actually see you? They see how you see yourself in the mirror or do they see you how you look in a picture? That’s what I’m really curious about
Lovely Lia how u look in pics
Neither. Because how you look in the mirror is a flipped image and a photo is a 2 dimension image.
My Beloved they see us as we see ourselves in the mirror. For example you've got pimple on right cheek but people would see pimple on left cheek because they're in front of you
you know, I once asked my friends, when we stood in front of a mirror. They said I look like in the mirror, not different...so I don´t really know
They see us how we look in a picture
This, people, is quality content on UA-cam. I really enjoyed this video Lou. I learnt a lot and your humour is always welcomed.❤❤❤❤❤
Totally agree 👍
What is it with people that look good in every photo, what kind of sorcery is that?! 😁
MaryBeth Myrick idk lol
Its like everything in life if you train you get better at it, Ppl say I look good in photos and yeah I kinda think so too I kinda have a photo face or standard pose using My good side and standard smile, Ive learned what worked as mom took a lot of pictures of us and demanded us to look at the camera, if you are used to it its more likely to succeed and act natural so you train by take lots of photos and figure out what works for you.
I think we're too hard on ourselves in pics. I can have someone say, "You look good in that picture," and I'll be like, "You need to put your glasses on because I totally disagree."
Photoshop x)
Mirror me: oooOOH GURL u a SNACC
Camera me: ew. Go back to sleep
me too! my face looks really symmetrical in the mirror, but in photos my nose is slightly bent off at an angle, etc. it's so annoying
This freakin' lady...ok....this lady is my new best friend in my head...i just like who her spirit is...
I'm a graphic designer and I used to feel that retouching photos was inauthentic. But when we look at one another, our brains filter out some of the "perceived" imperfections. So a still image has to be altered to match that. So, there's that.
Caroline, that doesn't make sense. Retouching is inauthentic, unless its a very old picture that is falling apart.
Berly i think you lack reading comprehension.
sorry mido, I don't have your brain filters.
Sooo.. Mirror is closer to reality because you are moving everytime and people see you that way
Also mirror is flipped
Lmfao!! When she’s talking about Bradley Cooper“But you would’ve never known it, cause damn” haha
Diana Rubio She's hilarious! I love it
Diana Rubio
I just did the photoshop test and omg I'm a monster
No you aren't
An oger
"I wish we all concentrated a little more on what's on the inside"
First of all . . . I feel like I'm ugly on the inside too😭
She funny tho I like her😂
You funnier🤣
If I have to take a selfie, I just record myself instead, that way I can pick a frame that looks good.
I did that too!!!!
When looking in a mirror, I find that I brace myself, open my eyes wider and lift my chin to lessen any double chin action. I wish I could do that in photos.
I read that the more symmetrical you are the more attractive you are, yet Bradley cooper is highly asymmetrical AND attractive???
(great video too!)
That gives me hope though, my face is just as asymmetrical as his. :'D
Annetta Waiz ah me too but girl you’re beautiful 😩
ixa Nawww thank you 💕
he is attractive, because his face looks like of a genuinely nice person, and he has beautiful eyes. I am not a fan, I speak objectively.
Annetta Waiz same here ;)
Could you explain why in different lighting we look so different? In some lighting when I am looking in a mirror I look really good but then in other lighting like Walmart bathrooms with fluorescent lighting I look ugly and I can not tell which one resembles me the most.
With not natural light we tend to look worse more specifically on white lights so you basically dont look like the walmart lightning
Fluorescent is the worst, the brighter it is the worse it is
It is pretty simple.
Yes shadows around mouth or else where stand out too much
“Bradley Cooper has the most asymmetrical face out there”
Me: I am actually president of this company
You check out mine lol. I think u can have a Vice President 😂
Masai Davidson is that you on your pfp? if yes, you’re face is PERFECT
Take two mirrors . One smaller than the other. Put the small mirror on the bigger one on a side so you can see from both mirrors. This is how you look in real life.
i do this everyday but i still look ugly 😭
I was scared with what I saw
@@nvrmd9353 how did you place the mirrors?
Cryptic Wintermoon so scared to see the truth 😂
Its looks like I have a big head with a small skinny neck😥
Elsa Agðarsdotter same here ! hate myself in pictures 😑
Can we talk about how beautiful your sofa, pillows and art look!!! Love it!!
MissMeem, I feel a lot better now, lol. Thanks for that :)
I don't know why this comment doesn't have more likes
Sometimes I think too much about it, I feel like I'm going crazy :/
Awww, this is so sweet! Thank you so much.. I’ve always struggled with the way I look :(
I love your slight lisp ... idk why I just think it’s super adorable and it makes me like you idk why isn’t that strange
whyyyy. I didn't notice it till you said that
reminds me of ellen pompeo
This makes me happy because I too have a slight lisp
I didn’t even realize she had one
Lindsey way I bet it’s adorable !
ok but I have a really low self esteem and I am still shocked each time I see a reflection of myself because I kinda never seem to realize how ugly I really am until I see it
Longcat same :(
i’m sure you’ll never see this comment but i just wanna say, i have extremely bad confidence in myself due to being called “ugly” all my life. it’s screwing up a lot, rarely got any compliments throughout my journey. But Watching this video gives me hope. Much appreciated.
Dylan Wright You’re not physically unattractive.
