Gruff is a short film made by the UA-camr Julian Curi and is absolutely incredible. Gruff is a “handmade, paper short film” which honestly so looks better than most of Disney’s latest animated movies. It has been beautifully and intricately crafted and is just so creative. I highly recommend this movie! Let's discuss it! I hope you enjoy and thank you for watching!
There are spoilers in the video!

Every once in a while, the UA-cam algorithm scores a perfect bullseye, and when it suggested Gruff, there was no truer shot made. Yes, that's a couple of "Westerns" metaphors. Gruff shows the power of authentic storytelling. Disney has the resources to pour into their projects to produce polished results, but focuses too much on that aspect rather than crafting quality stories.
One scene had an interesting element that would not have survived the typical Disney glossy editing. It was when the door bounced back and forth as Hazel came into her fathers hospital room. The paper door flexing was obvious and at first watch comes across as unpolished. But that very "defect", as Disney would have seen it, is what highlights the artistic style of the film and, in my mind, enhances the intimate tone of the tale. The rough nature of Hazel's relationship with her father is central to the story and that is conveyed beautifully in the texture and "imperfections" of the paper artform.

Bonita and the Bandit is the TV show that Abuelo is always watching in the short film, Gruff. It is only shown in bits and pieces in Gruff, as well as in black and white. So, he uploaded the full piece, in color, on his channel. It's certainly worth a watch!@@MsScreenCritic

I agree with everything you said; Gruff is incredible and I am glad it was made. Yet, the problem I have, is why compared this to Disney? I get that this short film managed to be more creative, than what most big entertainment companies pump out these days. And if it's animation, I can guess why you want to compare it to Disney; the most essential company to animation! But Gruff had nothing to compete with, aside from maybe other short films on UA-cam. And it's hyperbolic to compare this tiny homemade passion project created by some guy who puts it up for free; to the (probably) biggest entertainment corporation on the planet, and the thousands of media they produce! If Gruff was a feature film made by one of Disney's competitors, like DreamWorks, then that's understandable. But for how it is, there's no need.
And I wish people stop comparing art to whatever is big and popular. I'm not saying you shouldn't compare pieces of art, and explain why one works and the other doesn't. But compare art that are in the same length, and not like what you're doing. Plus, I wish people appreciate art on its own, rather shaming what's around them for their appreciation.
I hope this helped you and how to proparely compared art next time. Your video's far from bad, but it's a problem I have to address.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Totally understand where you are coming from but I think it's very fair to compare smaller art to bigger cooperations, especially since Disney hasn't been making many memorable movies now. They mainly make sequels or remakes now. And I think lots of people will compare Gruff to Disney movies, since Gruff is such an original idea. And I never shamed Disney, it was just a comparison! 😊

@@MsScreenCritic You're welcome, and thank you for taking your time to comment as well. You opened eyes on what I was saying. I realised that any art should be compared, no matter if one is from someone small and the other is from a big company. And Gruff is something a lot of massive corporations, like Disney, wouldn't bother trying anymore. An original idea that attempts something new (especially with its paper puppet animation).
I was generally frustrated that when a brilliant piece of art comes, sometimes only praise people give, is for doing better than whatever else is there; rather than for its own merit. But you did understand my POV, and I do appreciate that. I'm sorry if my comment sounded like you were shaming Disney. That was part on what I said I find frustrating about comparsions. I had no intentions of making sound you did more than a comparison.
I really do say thank you for your response. I know it might sound silly, but I'm glad there was someone who pointed things out, that I missed.
