The fact that James is telling us behind the scenes of animating really makes you acknowledge and appreciate the time and effort that must've been spent into this video even more
Hes right an animator has to animate EVERY SINGLE FRAME and not miss a single one. The fact his videos are smooth and have colour is amazing. That toxic comment was a guy with spare time looking for something to do.
When the background that took 7 hours to make was played for the extra 4 seconds, I actually paused it and just appreciated all the detail. It’s incredible all of the detail that goes missed by the viewers, us, that the brilliantly talented artists make
*Animation studios: Our employees love work! We pay them 100,000$ Per month.* *The truth: ARE YOU DONE WITH THE SEASON?!? WE HAVE 17028022937383781 SEASONS TO GO!*
One 22 minute South Park episode takes 6 days to make, and as an animator I jumped out of my chair. The brainstorming, scripting, animating, voice acting, and editing are all done in 6 freaking days. It's just absolutely mindblowing seeing how well made these episodes are in that short period of time. Animation takes time, but keep in mind that there's a whole process besides the animation.
Plus not to meantion they’ve been doing that for YEARS they’re pipeline is stupid solidified cause the entire team has a full layout before they start. There’s honestly no way they aren’t just immediately crunching from day 1 though like gd
A lot of time in the off season they flesh out ideas and take notes to potentially be used in an episode. every so often they do special episodes that are made in the off season and take loads of time to make like the hand animated ninja episode or the heavy metal one that uses rotoscope
I'm honestly impressed that background ONLY took 7 hours to make, it looks amazing. I'm no illustrator, but I know doing something like that as a graphic designer would take me... like, days. Okay, I'm not a very good graphic designer. But still, that's amazing you've got a really talented team!
I'M SO GLAD THIS VIDEO EXISTS, people do not appreciate artists enough. I work with some artists and honestly pay them for their time and respect them for taking the time to work on backgrounds, my character and etc. appreciate your art friends and support them through the whole process.
Same! I frown when my artist friends downplay or under sell themselves. I'm glad their trying to work with my budget but when I know for a fact they should be paid more, I do so. They get suprised so I remind them every time to know their worth, and that if I was broke that's my problem not theirs.
As a small animator, I appreciate that he tells the truth about art/animation. It does take months just for a 5 second video. Artists are misunderstood!
Exactly, it’s so hard for the shading and the filling and everything! Everyone pressuring you to upload something is so wrong. It’s literally really hard okay? Especially if ur not like in a Pixar studio working with everyone! They need time and patience.

As someone who does art as a hobby, I really appreciate this video because it's a struggle a lot of artists go through. I have family and friends telling me to pursue art as a career when they don't understand the difficulties. Thanks, James!
As someone who is trying to become an animator, this is much appreciated. IT TAKES A LONG TIME. Major respect to all artists. Edit: wait what?? How did my comment get so many likes? I’m confused, but definitely glad so many agree :)

This should be shown to everyone asking why we don’t have season 1 of Hazbin yet. The deal only went through last *year*, guys, you’re lucky we get Helluva Boss at all.
I mean, I looked at episode 6 and the animation in the fighting scene literally shows the amount of time put into it! There are shows that CAN make an episode per week, but they are cheap and horribly written for the most part (this of cause does not include south park!). Vivziepop and the team know what they do and they want to make something great. But it takes time. And I'd rather wait 6 months or longer for one episode and later recommend the entire series to my friends because it's hilarious and awesome, than beeing unhappy with the result of time pressure.
Also note: The main reason that an episode of South Park can be made in as little as a week is because South Park had been in production for the last 20-odd years, and in that time they've created a library of assets numbering somewhere in the tens of thousands (probably), and that library gets a tiny bit bigger every time they have to draw something from scratch. Lots of time is saved in not having to create new assets, however simple they may be.
I wouldn't call this an "art rant", I'd call it mandatory viewing material for anyone wanting to be an artist. Also for us non-artists, you explained this environment (pun intended) really well. You make great videos, but this is clearly one of your best.
As an artist and one who's delved into animation before, I thought this video was genius in demonstrating it's points and I really appreciate you making something like this.
I can relate. I started a few months ago with animation, and honestly. I am not surprised I get stressed out while animating. Plus my animations are always lazy.
It's so weird how his voice sounds so much higher when he's in character, but when I see him with that beard I think the deepness of his voice really stands out.
There is an anime Shirobako about 5 girls who decided to work in animation industry. (It is based on real-life workflow and most of the characters are even based on real people from anime industry). And for manga industry there is Bakuman. It is bigger and much more story-driven, but still gives pretty good explanation about the BTS of the industry.

as a photographer, I feel this. "why would I pay $___ when i have an iPhone" or "so and so has a good camera, they can do it cheaper" this is why I don't freelance too much. I mostly sell photos and graphic design work, (went to school for both) such as templates, and it's all passive.

There’s honestly no way they aren’t just immediately crunching from day 1 though like gd
it can take them even 3 days to make one, and they just make them as they go, they've even made changes a few hours before an episode aired.
A lot of time in the off season they flesh out ideas and take notes to potentially be used in an episode. every so often they do special episodes that are made in the off season and take loads of time to make like the hand animated ninja episode or the heavy metal one that uses rotoscope
the voice acting is done pretty much only by 2 people, u even more mind blown?
@@murkfv nah pretty much anyone who is a south park fan already knows that lol

@@lykanaslupus I am really convinced that episode 6 had the most high budget out all the episodes, and most time put on it

@@jamessicard1705 Alrighty, thanks.
I can't do that with my UA-cam series as everything I do is frame-by-frame.

Yes
Despite not being an animator, I'd actually love to hear about the animation pipeline. Seems super interesting.
fun fact, animation studios sometimes have a guy whos whole job is to just erase lines. They are part of the cleanup step in the animation pipeline
This was surprisingly educational and enjoyable. I cant do art but watching him talk about it makes me appreciate art more.

Art finds YOU
as a photographer, I feel this. "why would I pay $___ when i have an iPhone" or "so and so has a good camera, they can do it cheaper"
this is why I don't freelance too much. I mostly sell photos and graphic design work, (went to school for both) such as templates, and it's all passive. I mentally, emotionally can't handle justifying my price, and skillset, on top of seeking clients/marketing my skills.
