My respect for the animators at WIT and MAPPA has increased infinitely. AOT has such stellar animation, that I'm surprised that they didn't take a decade to make it.

I love this video for James explaining how much work can get into artist jobs are!
Something that I wish James would also mention dealing with when it would come to commission work (something that one of my art professors in college helped simulate for one of my classes to help students prepare) is coming across Karen customers, where you can make something over and over and it still wouldn't fit to what they're looking for.
That class in college pretty much discouraged me away from making commission work for my art because it felt the really draining and mental health depleting, and was starting to ruin my enjoyment of making art/drawing... 0_0

Fun fact: Disney recycled a lot of animations in their films, sometimes was evident and sometime not but the motive was have always a good quality for Disney standard even when they had problems with money. This is spot on. Making an animation really takes a lot of time, even more so for newbs like me. A decent 40 second animation feels like a hundred hours to make. But still it is fun and you learn more along the way.

As a voice actor, hearing people say “stop complaining, it’s just talking into a microphone. It’s easy” makes me angry. It is not just that. It’s finding people who will pay you enough so you can live for at least a month, making sure you get the voice down and don’t kill your voice from, possibly over 80 attempts, saying one sentence and making sure that all of it is perfect and it sounds like a natural conversation, not some dude sitting in his bedroom talking to himself. Entertainment and animation is hard, and I hate how not a lot of people understand it. Also, I’d love to see how the animation pipeline works. I wanna see how they can get drawing to move like their real so seamlessly
EXACTLY! I've been trying to audition for VA. It's not easy. At all.
You need to get your voice down pat, make sure it doesn't hurt you, it's a lot of acting because you have to say the same sentence over 20xs trying to get it correctly. You are a genuine actor. The only difference is that the public doesnt see you.
Hell, up until the 2000s, no one noticed voice actors like they do now but now many travel. It's the rise of the internet.

As a rapper it’s not just rapping over a beat it’s lyric writing and takes hours of work sometimes 10s of hours for one song just to get hated

Another hard part is making each pose and frame of the character consistent
The amount of effort that goes into animation is insane. Spending hours upon hours making sure that 3 second bit looks right. I may be an amateur but I have experienced the stress of animating first hand

I remember since I was little, when watching cartoons I always paid attention to the background. Sometimes I wasn't even concentrated on the plot because I was looking around at objects in the back.

As a person who makes small FlipaClip animations, he speaks the truth. It takes me a week to make a 5 second video
The animation process is a painstaking one, taking into account the story, the character design, the backgrounds, the filming process, the voice recordings, etc. If it's difficult for a single person using apps like FlipaClip, imagine for a whole company using whatever resources they have at hand, whether it's hand-drawn or CGI! A single animated movie can take years, picture the time for a season of a series. My hat off to you for your video 👍👍👍👍👍👍

As a small animator, I appreciate that he tells the truth about art/animation. It does take months just for a 5 second video. Artists are misunderstood!

Yeah. Animations are pretty hard
Interesting to note that this high ratio of time=output is consistent across other artistic areas too! E.g. as an event photographer/videographer, editing photos always takes at LEAST 2x as long as the actual event, often 3x? And that's just selecting best still shots, weeding out crappy ones, cropping & contrast clean-up as required. If you have to process video clips, add any effects or text, extract sound bytes etc... Generally you'd be looking at @least 3x the event length, minimum.
Once you start putting together UA-cam-type content with mixed stills, edited video clips, sound effects, texts & animations.... you could easily end with anywhere between 100:1 and 200:1 ratio of creation time to final content duration, in my experience. I'm skeptical about whether most people who watch YT vids realize just how much post-processing time & effort is involved with each of a creator's uploads...? And that's before you even get into the pre-production planning, research & copyright-clearance time!
