  • In 2008 the U.S. Coast Guard Band welcomed Leonard Slatkin to the podium to conduct as the Captain Lewis J. Buckley guest conductor.

    I can't find any fault with this performance. Have the Howard Hanson recording with The Eastman-Rochester Orchestra and The Boston Pops recording with Keith Lockhart and the MAESTRO'S performance here is just as good as the other two. Glad to hear this work at all, it's one of those American masterpieces that hardly anyone records anymore.

    Superb performance. I've always considered the tempi in Howard Hanson's performance with the Eastman Rochester Orchestra to be much too fast.

    Slatkin totally ruins the climax of this piece. Just blows through it. Unbelievable.

      Not sure why maestro was in such a hurry. I think the serene middle section was also too fast, although this outstanding ensemble still made it sound beautiful.

      Have you heard Hanson’s recording on Mercury Living Presence? It’s not that different in terms of tempi. I agree with the other reply that the middle section is too fast.
