Old forester, WT 101, pikesville, Stellum Rye, and michters rye. So completely agree with a few of these lol. Agree the price for proof on michters is tough but the flavor is worth it
I know you guys were not going with sourced products, but Redemption Rye is just my favorite budget rye. It just hits my flavor profile perfectly and it won't break the bank. I've tried a lot of different bottles, and it's the one I constantly think about wanting to go back to.
@@toddtipton2857 This is Funny, I just got back from the ABC store (Hoover, AL) moments ago and just sat down with my lunch. I picked up the very bottle we are talking about as a back up to the one I currently have, I went because a friend let me know they had Knob Creek Rye Single Barrel Store picks which I also grabbed. 😁
I would add Knob Creek Rye 100 proof to the list, especially now with the new 7 year age stated version. If you can find the single barrel for under $50 still, even better. I also frequently find the various Rossville Union single barrel ryes on sale at Binnys (Chicagoland area) for $49.99. They release several different mashbills (95% rye, 51 rye with corn as the secondary, and also a 51/49 rye/malt) which makes it fun. They are also cask strength and up to 7 years old, so a good value at $50. Rossville is part of MGP, so therefore it is not a sourced mgp product.
Hard to argue with that list! I'd make one addition, which is a bit pricey to call a bargain at $60, but in my opinion competes with LE rye whiskies twice it's price (or more), and that's Sagamore Spirit Double Oak. $10 more than Pikesville around me, but I'd take it over even pricier options like Rare Breed Rye and hard to find bottles like A Midwinter's Night Dram. Cheers!
Not inexpensive but I love my Rare Breed Rye and Driftless Glenn from Wisconsin is doing a marvelous job both standard and their amazing cask strength, should be receiving the holy grail today, normally I like to stare at my bottles for a while but I'll hit it and let you know though I'm quite confident it'll be very special.🥃
Think you guys turned me onto the Overholt 114. Don't see it around here ever. Found one in some travels and immediately snagged it. Have been savoring it sparingly as I have not seen another since. Big flavors and has a creamy texture and feel to it for me. Delicious! Great list...Cheers!
Michael Flatley ….. funny refernce 😂. That’s a great list and we’ve had each one of those bottles. Mavis and her bathtub - so funny. Love that cat! Cheers and have a great week. 🥃
All 5 are regulars for me! Smart to reign in the options by excluding sourced, otherwise we all might have a lot more options for you. Of course we will all have additional options but that's a solid 5 for budget Rye's! Good video!
@@xiamengbaby I'm not up on my Michters information, It will take about 5 seconds to find out brb.... Yup their Rye is sourced, unknown Kentucky distillery. Nice Job!
Love the Riverset rye store pick pretty much center stage. 1 of our 2 picks is a Honey bomb that we like so much we have bought 6 bottles. Plus you can not go wrong at $49.99 for 115ish proof.
Playing by your rules, I’d go with 1) Bulleit Rye - makes a great old fashioned or Manhattan and is a decent sipper neat. 2) Knob Creek Rye - now with a 7 year age statement and makes a very nice sipper and mixer. 3) Rittenhouse BiB - makes the best whisky sours and is nice to sip neat too. 4) Pikesville - just excellent as a neat sipper.
I've been jonesing to try the Old Overholt 114 like forever, but it's not sold in my home state of Illinois. Not sure what states carry it that are anywhere near. Illinois also doesn't allow online liquor purchases from out of state either. So I'm high and dry on the OO114.
I have a weird problem. I gave up alcohol for a year. But, now I have this bottle of 10 year old, single barrel, cask strength Trail's End staring me down. I don't know if I can make it! Send help!
Had a chance to taste Pikeville at a bar recently and I was very impressed. Kind of surprised you didn’t mention any of the Sagamore line which are fantastic as well. 👍🏻
I've been hearing good things about Old Overholt 114 for a few years, but can't find it in my area. Decided to get Old Overholt Bonded instead and I was not impressed--there was a sour, earthiness in the bottle I got that is really off-putting. Maybe the higher proof makes it better?
i am torn between happy and embarrassed that i drank 4 out of 5 of these last week. The only one not was old over since i dont have it. I still go back to pikesville as one of my fav daily
Not in my view. Whole different category. The finish is outside the lines. It’s good, but it’s more like Dovetail “bourbon”-an outlier. None of the ryes in their list is “finished” if I’m correct. And very few ryes are as wildly finished as Seagrass! FWIW, Dovetail and Seagrass are two of my favorites, and are both outstanding as gifts to people who are relatively experienced whiskey drinkers. Most haven’t tasted them, and in my experience, most light up and love the voyage outside the box…
Two that aren't widely available. Balcones 100 proof Rye at around $45 and Driftless Glen Single Barrel Rye, (96 Proor, ) also around $45. Both are not your ordinary MGP style ryes.
When I see rye in the title, I brace myself for rye puns. I am pleasantly pleased with the control of the rye puns. I was all set to subscribe so I could unsubscribe. Keep moving ryed along.
Old Forester was my first rye and remains my go-to for just about everything when I want rye.

Right there with you on the Redemption Rye.
wt101 rye just hits my palette...luv it.
Great list and all great pours imo. Love the channel and the content. Cheers y’all!
I’ve only had one of them. The old forester just does it for me. However I’m excited to try the others. Cheers🥃👍🥃🎉
Rittenhouse Rye is a decent value as well and half the price of Pikesville.☺
Thumbs up on that call, they have single barrels for basically the same price if you can find them.
Yes great call on this one! And Joe below is spot on as well. Picked a single barrel up not too long ago for roughly the same price as the regular.
ABC in Alabama had a SiB Pick a few months ago that’s really good

Sagamore Double Oak was on our list, but we pulled it because it's still sourced from MGP, I believe.
But yeah, that's amazing whiskey, and one of our absolute favorite ryes!
This is why you two drive the van and I'm just a backseat driver. I can't even keep the rules straight for 10 minutes! 🙃

I thought Michters Rye was a sourced whiskey from what I've read.

I’m a big fan of the OOH114 I mean it’s in the initials! Haha😂
One rye I want to revisit is the Knob Creek small batch aged stated at 7yrs now!
Excellent selections my friends.

Glad you like it, cheers!
I love it! In a blind……I may say it’s a high rye bourbon ! I love ryes, so that’s a good thing! Great pick guys!@@TheBourbonVan
I don’t have the Michter’s, but the rest are solid. Great list and this coming from a guy that isn’t big on ryes
Thanks James, cheers.
Coppercraft Straight Rye. So good! I think cheaper bourbon tastes thin, but cheaper ryes seem to be my jam
I just picked up the Templeton finished in stout casks. Excited to try it!

As much as we love Bulleit, it is sourced from MGP, so we had to dismiss it from our list. The others were definitely on our short list though.
@@TheBourbonVan I guess I didn’t play by your rules after all. Forgot about the sourcing!
I do love Old Forester Rye! So good.
Pikesville is the bomb 💣
No argument there.

Love the Michael Flatley reference! 😆 🤣
There was a brief moment where Fred Astaire entered my mind, but Flately just felt like a better reference in the moment LOL.
Great choice!
Love OF rye and WT101 rye.😍😍😍
Another budget rye is Woodford reserve rye....I don't appreciate it like others but it is a budget rye 👍🏼
Great list - I will take the Old Overholt 114 please
I have a weird problem. I gave up alcohol for a year. But, now I have this bottle of 10 year old, single barrel, cask strength Trail's End staring me down. I don't know if I can make it! Send help!

Had a chance to taste Pikeville at a bar recently and I was very impressed. Kind of surprised you didn’t mention any of the Sagamore line which are fantastic as well. 👍🏻
Definitely enjoy the Sagamore, particularly the Double Oaked, but every bottle still features some percentage of sourced whiskey, so we left it out.
@@TheBourbonVan They do have a 5 year Bib that's really good imo. Might be hard to come by outside of MD - anyway, good content per usual!
Pikesville rye is a great pour!
Whiskey acres bottled in bond rye is amazing! I also have a couple of their rye single barrel picks that are hitters!
We had a single barrel bourbon from them that was all candy corn and butterscotch. That bottle disappeared quickly.
My fav is probably the OF rye but I really like Templeton 6 yr rye as well.
As much as I love OF bourbon, I've never tried their rye. I think it's time. Michael Flatley ftw.
p.s. How is the Russell's Reserve 6 year? Haven't tried it.
We enjoy it, but it strikes us as a touch uninspiring. Between 101 and Rare Breed, we’re very satisfied.
Bulleit Rye is my favorite value rye. Russell’s Reserve 6 Year is good as well. I also like Chattanooga 99 Rye.
That Chattanooga 99 Rye doesn't seem to get a lot of attention, but agree...it is good juice!
I'm so happy you mentioned Bulleit Rye. I was planning on getting hate, because it's one of my favorites. The bourbon is pretty good too.
Michter's Rye is a sourced product from what I have read. Even the back label says "bottled by" rather than "distilled by".
That's frustrating because when we visited the distillery, they insisted that they were no longer sourcing their rye.
@@TheBourbonVan Maybe they are bottling their own whiskey now. If they are, they need to be a little more transparent and forthcoming with that info.
James E Pepper's 1776 is quite good and inexpensive. It is on your shelf
Sourced from MGP, so we left it off this list, though it is a solid and tasty value.

In complete honesty, we greatly dislike Old Overholt Bonded. The 114 is a completely different whiskey to our palates.
I just bought a bottle of Old Overholt Bonded over vacation. I like it, but the Overholt 114 sounds interesting. Need to look out for that one.

Look on the bright side. At least you're drinking high value whiskeys, lol.
Could Barrell Seagrass be on this list? I guess not for value, but my goodness that's a mind-bending whiskey! :D
Pretty sure it’s also sourced, so wouldn’t make our list, but if it hits your palate and is worth the money, that sounds like value to us.

Emerald Giant from Redwood Empire
We definitely love that one, but had to leave it off our list since it's sourced.
Wild turkey Rare Breed Rye. Everyday sipper, Redwood Empire Emerald Giant.
Emerald Giant is so good. We keep seeing it for $30 elsewhere, but at $40 in Oregon, it’s a tough pill to swallow. Cheers!
