Make An O Scale Flood Loader from a Menards Structure

- In recent years, Wisconsin-based home improvement chain Menards has produced many unique and well-detailed buildings for the O and HO scale model train market. II recently purchased the Menards American Materials Plant #1 in hopes of modifying it to solve a unique problem on my model railroad. Let’s take a look!
This structure is a good fit for small spaces with a footprint of less than 6 inches by 6 inches, yet it has an impressive height of more than 15 inches. While the Menards building is fine as-is, I was not really looking for a sand, gravel, or concrete facility for my railroad. What I really wanted for my layout was a coal flood loader. I saw the Menards Materials Plant and thought I might be able to use it as the start of a coal loader facility and save myself a lot of time and design work.

Upper addition is great!
Thank you!
Mike, excellent project video. I think that tall vertical structures like yours help make a layout. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it!
That turned out awesome!
Thanks!
I really like this whole idea i 100% support this whole thing and it’s giving me inspiration
Great!!!
Great work Mike.
Thanks!
Very nice!
Thanks!
Really enjoyed thx
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice buildings
Thank you!
I got a great idea! Based on an article in MR magazine, I am going to make some of my layout literally flip around to show a different scene. One such scene is Lignite, which has a coal mine. The other is Menardsville, which has a grain elevator. Since this structure would be too big for the changing scene, I plan to set it aside from that panel, and, in addition to making it a functioning coal loader, I will use it as both part of the mine AND as the grain elevator!
Sounds ambitious. Let us know how it works out!
@@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks If you think that was ambitious, you should see the rest of my plans! In other words, might have to wait a little while (a couple years) till I even start that section.
Thanks, Mike. I've been looking for a reason to get the materials handling structure, but I haven't figured out a good location for it that works. I was thinking it had good potential to be kit bashed also. I'm modeling a midwest layout in the 50's-60's, so I don't want permanent buildings that look too modern looking.
I wish Menards would reissue the Morton salt plant. I grew up near the salt mines, and that was one of the coolest structures Menards ever made. It was already out of production by the time I was even aware they sold them. I think one of the most frustrating problems associated with O-scale is that there just aren't a lot of really good industrial models made like the Walthers models made for HO. I'm looking for a decent grain silo or grain bins. I would like to see Menards make a John Deere or Oliver tractor supply building. I just accept that most things will need to be scratched built if you want them. I'm in the process of scratch building a car bridge and adding some short extensions for some girder bridges. Scratch building a tractor supply building is a ways down on the list. I'm a little bit particular in that they need to look somewhat authentic and not all plasticialy like the Plasticville stuff.
Thanks for the comments. You might think with all of the ACF hoppers they have been making a silo would be in the works. Maybe.
Great idea and very innovative use of a pre-made building.
Thank you very much!
Great project! Really like the combination with the power plant.
Thank you!!
I LOVE that animated flag and I'm the one who got chased off the Menards FB group for not liking the UNPROTOTYPICAL flags on the Menards UP F units.

I like it! You could move the 4 lights up to the top of the new structure. You may want to add some white lights for the workmen to see.
Yes. I'll also have to add a few lights to the conveyor when it is all finished.
Very 😎 cool.
Thanks!
