I'm a new nurse, and I was scheduled to work the past two days at the hospital for Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day. It broke my heart to miss out on spending Christmas with my family for the first time, and I was struggling. On the drive to work, I played this song for the first time and felt an immediate sense of calmness and peace rush over me. It's truly amazing how this song is able to shift your perspective and make you focus on the only One who truly matters in our lives; Jesus Christ, Our Savior
Edub1321: Two years after you wrote this, I see it. Hope healthcare has been kind to you. I am a MedLab Assistant in Nova Scotia. Hymn is haunting, yet beautiful.
I always loved this song! I used to hear it sung in church when I was a kid, now I'm 70 years old. I always pictured some one wandering at night in the desert under the stars but this video of the wilderness fits perfectly and the singing is so beautifully done. Thanks for making such a great video!
I was reading "Windows on Christmas" by Bill Crowder and this song was used as an illustration--I vaguely remembered it from hearing it as a child--I am 62 now!! So I looked it up---a haunting melody---Yes, I do wonder as I wander why Christ would give His life for "Dust" and "Sheep" we really are not much---yet we are God's most "treasured possessions" Pure love-we can't comprehend it, but are oh, so grateful for it!!!! Believe today in Christ!!! You will never regret it!!! I have had Systemic Lupus for 38 years-lots of organ damage--He has never left a need unmet!!!
Andrey's voice so soft and tender but penetrates the deepest shores of my soul. I am transported to the very feet of Christ and make me worship falling at His nail pierced feet in humble gratitude. What a wonderful hymn and what an anointed singing!
Audrey's vocals are stunning as always, but what really makes this song incredible is the production. The instrumentation is so unusual and turbulent and every musical effect is placed so particularly. As a result, this is not just a good cover, but an outstanding one. Praise the Lord.
I was in 7th grade when I learned this song through the choir director at my local church. I have remembered it ever since. The story was someone was going around collecting songs and some young girl (in the Ozarks, I believe) had made this song up. It's incredible.
And we're still singing her song to this day. I doubt that thought ever occurred to her when she first wrote it. Absolutely amazing. I love stories like these.
You can't go the distance With too much resistance, being idle just wont get you anywhere. its time to take up the cross and follow Lord Jesus. Just too many People living their lives like rocking chairs! I Pray you spend more time with the lord and walk away from Sin..
I was going through john 1 study for Christmas preparation. Came across this 1 article which said this song descended from grandmom to mom to daughter who was humming and heard it by the writer of this song. Thank you for the uploading such great song.
Just so everyone knows, this song has existed long before Lindsey Stirling. Try 1933. It was composed by John Jacob Niles, one of the most important figures in American folk music. He was inspired by the song of Annie Morgan in Murphy, NC. She was an impoverished Appalachian revivalist's daughter and was singing for money. Niles collected what he heard that day and reconceived it into this melody. Go listen to "What Songs Were Sung" for another poignant Niles Christmas carol.
Your knowledge is both valuable as it is appreciated. Thank you for those facts and the care you took in presenting them. May God Bless you and keep you.
Your voice is just absolutely stunning. It is exactly the type that imbues the songs with beauty and piousness. You worked hard and it shows in your music. Words enunciated and the notes floated, but supported at the same time. Gorgeous.
..Somebody has certainly discovered thesaurus.com lmao. I don't think 'piousness' means what you think it means. Nor do I think you know how to structure a sentence. Great song though, yeah. Great song.
I wasn't confusing that word with anything, but I thank you for your concern to that end. And it does if you'd like to be considered intelligent and communicate your ideas in a clear and meaningful way.
I was hurt by what seemed like an unnecessary message left on my comment. I thought of a number of ways to respond, but ultimately decided I didn't need to respond. What response could I leave that would improve the situation? Nothing. I was cheered to see someone defending me yesterday, though. Thanks. kindspring.org
I've never heard this song, but it appeared in the book I'm currently reading and this seemed as good a version as any, and I have to say: wow. Such a beautiful voice and such a peaceful song (even an atheist can appreciate it xDDD) n_n
*Appalachian folk hymn, collected in 1933 by American folklorist John Jacob Niles* I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander.. out under the sky When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall And the Promise of ages.. it then did recall If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing Or all of God's angels in heaven for to sing He surely could have seen it.. 'cause He was the King
Beyond Beautiful words cannot express how beautifully it was sung from a place of knowing and loving God and his beloved son Our Lord Jesus Christ. Every view of this song let it echo round this world and fill light into every dark corner. Until all that is dark has been blinded by God's love.🌍🦋😇🙏😎
This is perhaps my favorite Christmas song. It was originally performed in the Appalachian town of Murphy, NC, a short drive from where I live in Appalachia today. It captures not only the love and ever present guidance of Christ, but the melancholy and longing that dominates our region. It is a masterpiece.
Good version, but she left out three stanzas. Here are the complete lyrics, as written by John Jacob Niles in 1933: I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall And the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing A star in the sky or a bird on the wing Or all of God's Angels in heaven to sing He surely could have it, 'cause he was the King I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky
I wonder as I wander out under the sky That Jesus my Savior did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I I wonder as I wander out under the sky I wonder as I wander out under the sky That Jesus my Savior did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I I wonder as I wander out under the sky Hum hum hum hum hum hum Hum hum hum hum hum hum I wonder as I wander out under the sky.
THIS SONG WAS FIRST SUNG BY A YOUNG GRIL ANNIE MORGAN IN 1933 FOR JOHN JACOB NILES, ANNIES FATHER WAS A MINISTER WITH HER MOTHER WERE LIVING DESTITUTE ON THE SQUARE IN MURPHY,NC HER MOTHER WAS WASHING THEIR CLOTHES IN THE FOUNTAIN IN THE ROUNDABOUT, THE WHOLE TOWN WAS IN REVIVAL THAT WEEK, CERTAIN PEOPLE HAD ASKED THE POLICE TO REMOVE THEM, WHEN ANNIE HAD SUNG THE SONG THE FIRST TIME JOHN SAID HE WOULD GIVE A QUARTER EACH TIME SHE WOULD SING IT WHILE WROTE IT DOWN HE GAVE HER $ 1.75 NO DOUBT THEIR PRAYER HAD BEEN ANSWERED GASOLINE WAS $ 13 CENTS PER GAL. AND FOOD VERY INEXPENSIVE
My Mom sang this in an Acapella choir and taught it to me as a child. I was blessed to sing it at Mom's funeral and a tribute to her. To me it speaks from the point of the arduous voyage of the three wise men following a star. Its beautiful pensive tune describes the loneliness of the Wisemen voyage but also our journey through life and our individual goal to seek our LORD. Truly beautiful song.

Indeed!
thank you to my choir teacher .. Gloria.... for letting me sing this solo.... . had a great backup choir...forever in my heart...

I sang this without accompanimentwhile in 9th grade cantata. Have always loved it. I am now 74 years old.
I first heard my dad sing this when I was a young child. It has always tugged at my heart strings....especially at Christmas. Beautiful rendition!
Andrey's voice so soft and tender but penetrates the deepest shores of my soul. I am transported to the very feet of Christ and make me worship falling at His nail pierced feet in humble gratitude. What a wonderful hymn and what an anointed singing!
Enchanting and mystically beautiful. And as always - so anointed by the Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord.
This is so beautiful....I'm in tears... How can one truly comprehend what Jesus did for us?
Audrey's vocals are stunning as always, but what really makes this song incredible is the production. The instrumentation is so unusual and turbulent and every musical effect is placed so particularly. As a result, this is not just a good cover, but an outstanding one. Praise the Lord.
I suspect a large part of the "turbulence" is a reversed reverb on some of the percussion. Still neat though.
Audrey you have lifted me up so many times with your beautiful lyrics. There is a special place for you in heaven.

It's an Appalachian hymn

There's a plug in this video, but it's the researched origin of the song.
And we're still singing her song to this day. I doubt that thought ever occurred to her when she first wrote it. Absolutely amazing. I love stories like these.

My late husband and I enjoyed this piece and you perform it so well. Bless you.
Truly, her voice conveys the most beautiful rendition of this song that I have EVER heard. Holy smokes!
What a gorgeous version of this composition. This vocalist has just the perfect voice that captures the essence of these lyrics. Thank you!
I was going through john 1 study for Christmas preparation. Came across this 1 article which said this song descended from grandmom to mom to daughter who was humming and heard it by the writer of this song.
Thank you for the uploading such great song.
I had never heard of this hymn before listening to this album! Beautiful song! Thank you Jesus!!
*What a gorgeous display to match the message being sung*
My absolute favorite Christmas song of all time.
Your voice gives me the chills. I love your voice. Don't stop making music.
Hauntingly beautiful song.
Merry Christmas

So I came from Lindsey's video too and too couldn't imagine this atmosphere version, so lovely and cloudy, so precios

Wow, snide are we? I believe you are confusing "piousness" with "sanctimoniousness." And casual writing doesn't require "proper" sentence structure.
I wasn't confusing that word with anything, but I thank you for your concern to that end. And it does if you'd like to be considered intelligent and communicate your ideas in a clear and meaningful way.

Can't allow yourself to be hurt by the small stuff.
This should have millions of views.✝
We played this song in my school orchestra. I needed to hear it. I listened to a bunch of other covers of this and none are as good as this one.
Here after watching Lindsey Stirling's I wonder as I wander. Didn't know this song already existed lol. Beautiful mysterious song.
Same, but both songs are beautiful!
Same,, linsey redirected me to here,, what a beautiful song💚💜

I feel as if I were a bird soaring over the winter wilds of the Blue Ridge Mts. Very moving experience for me. Thank you.
Then you'd be in the sky not under it lol

In a way, both. You can still be 'under' the cloudline.
Me, somehow I felt like I was on the wing over Narnia.

Sooooo Beautiful! Been listening to all her songs for the past 6 hours!
I've never heard this song, but it appeared in the book I'm currently reading and this seemed as good a version as any, and I have to say: wow. Such a beautiful voice and such a peaceful song (even an atheist can appreciate it xDDD) n_n

I have loved this song for some time now ever since it found me on spotify.. so happy I decided to look up the video. How beautiful
Not even a Christian but love that song.
*Appalachian folk hymn, collected in 1933 by American folklorist John Jacob Niles*
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die

It's an old Celtic hymn. Some of the best hymns are Celtic in my opinion. I love the way they sound.
please see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Wonder_as_I_Wander
I heard this song at a Christmas concert last night for the first time sung by a meso soprano
Good version, but she left out three stanzas. Here are the complete lyrics, as written by John Jacob Niles in 1933:
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die
For poor on'ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all

I wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die
For poor on'ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
Thank you so very much for posting. One of my favourites!
Thanks for this! I wondered (😅) if there were other stanzas!

It’s not about onry people! It is shortened from the word ordinary to take a word with 4 syllables fit into a space for 2.
Amazingly beautiful.

This is a composition by John Jacob Niles. It was a favorite solo of my mother (1909-1979), and then of mine. I believe there is a recording by Niles.
