2024 Mazda CX-90: A more reliable BMW X5?

- MotoMan takes an early look at the all-new @MazdaUSA CX-90. More than just a new CUV, the Mazda CX-90 is a giant shift in a crowded segment. Why? The combination of a totally new RWD based large car platform and a BMW like inline 6-cylinder engine all wrapped in a flash interior, Mazda is making good on its previous ‘premium’ claims.

Mazda was premium in the 90s and early 2000s, went mainstream in 2003, and is now back to being premium. Glad to see them back because the Millenia was clearly showing where they were trying to go back in the day
I have a 2016 CX9 Signature. The wood is rosewood, used for guitars. I must say that the interior of mine still looks gorgeous 6 years later and still compares favorably compared to luxury options I crossed shipped back then (I excluded the F Type because of its poor interior). I am very eager to see the improvements in person. Funny I was considering replacing my CX9 by a X5 because I wanted a RWD platform and a I6 engine, I may replace it by another Mazda now…
C.V. Great comment. I own a CX-9 that was just like yours. I had SO many comments about how good that Auburn Brown leather and real wood trim was! I am scared that this white interior and very light wood might be the only top trim choice!
I’ve had the exact same experience. I was sad when Mazda moved away from the auburn interior. Everyone loves it and it even sold a signature model to a friend of mine just based on color 😂. And at 72k miles has been perfect reliability wise. Just consumables, no repairs.
@@slscamg The auburn looks good and more importantly, it held very well over 6 years (now I am one of those guys who religiously clean leather interiors 2x a year, which seems a lot but it probably does not take me more than 1h per year in time). Ours has 52k miles, same experience
@@OtisSpringerpilot While I like the auburn, I find the interior too dark and I would happily go for a light interior. With regular leather cleaning (less than an hour per year), I managed to keep them clean over the year, even the nearly white interior in my Genesis G70. Knowing Mazda and looking at their current signature models, I believe that tey would offer both the light and the dark interior like they did with the current CX-9
@@karkule5919 I agree that the old one was looking sleeker, the new one seems much more generic and less sharp, more "blob" but I reserve my judgment when I see it in person
I like the looks of this vehicle. It’s very attractive inside and out. If the drive test goes well, the CX-90 looks like a winner!
I would take this over anything that’s considered it’s competition just based on the engine layout and design. It’s beautiful!
I bought a 2018 Mazda6 2.5T. All these years later, if you were to have me cross-shop any car released since, I would still have bought the Mazda. Super comfy, handles great (OEM tires SUCK), fits everything with a great pass-through, easy to maintain-- best car we've ever owned. Really excited for their new platform.
First glance at the outside... I like the COLOR, the long hood (an unusual attribute for a Mazda), and the sweepy roof line. It looks nice. I'll be curious to see what the driving impressions are! :)
This trim will go for around $60k. Anything less than $60k is robbery. Spec sheet vs spec sheet, this thing conpetes with MDX Type S and Lexus RX 500h. Both of those cars go over $70k. The Mazda interior is also comparable, though perhaps not as upscale. There's simply no way this car will sell for $15k to $20k less than those cars. It doesn't make sense, commercially.
A Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve goes for over 80 grand!
60k seems fair to me
None of those other suv's are rwd and inline 6. If it drives and performs better than those two, mazda would match their pricing.
@EyriesC that's true too.
@@ariescaisip5498 This Mazda is actually AWD with a bias towards the rear.
That red paint color is gorgeous.
I agree they need to price closer to Palisades and Telluride to be competitive and sell.
You can’t compete with the Korean brands on upfront price. You can compete with them by focusing on long term reliability, depreciation curve, and dealer service quality.
@Avery the Koreans offer a ton of value for the money, this has to be priced competitively or it won't sell. I think they need to target between 55-60k for top trim, stay priced close to Koreans, undercut comparable acura and infiniti.
@@michaels7984 Personally, my family and friends won't even consider buying a Korean vehicle, no matter the price advantage. I think the vehicle is going to start at around the $55,000 mark. It's a double wishbone, dual clutch, RWD layout with a turbocharged inline six. It's going to be BMW X540i money. Mazda also stated that the closest competition is the Volvo XC90 which starts at around $55k.
Need to price in line with the Highlander. Highlander interior is just as nice on the top trims.
@Avery they have to undercut on price though or it won't sell, they are trying to push into a higher market without having the brand recognition. It will probably be more than the Koreans, but they cant go as high as the premium/luxury brands when just trying to break into that segment.
As always,great job Motoman and
this time,Mazda company too.
Very well done 3 row SUV!
That new color is beautiful! Looking forward to when you can get behind the wheel and give us some driving impressions.
Best car reviewer. Nobody does it better than Motoman period.
Excellent review. I’ve watched at least 6 other reviews from media they attended the same event and yours is by far is the most informative (at least for me). Looking forward to the test drive review.
Absolutely agreed. If the top trim exceeds $60k then the palisade, telluride and even the MDX would remain the top choices for most.
The product is a winner. If Mazda plays the pricing right they can unlock its full potential.
Stunning design, well done Mazda. That is indeed real wood; maple.
Very nice inside out. Can't wait to find out how it drives.
Excellent work by Mazda. Keeping physical buttons is smart. Rwd based platform hopefully will be used for a sedan and sports car. In-line 6s have always been smooth; MB and Chrysler are in agreement. Imagine a slightly larger Miata using the 2.5l engine. That would be a winner. Need some time to work out any potential engine/tranny issues as a first year product but I see myself buying a Mazda down the road.
I think a realistic vehicle would be reviving the Mazda 6 as a RWD sedan tweener between small and midsize that has a 115” wheelbase with a naturally aspirated inline six. The platform is probably too heavy for a dedicated sports car.
Slightly larger MX5 with a 2.5L is the GR86 btw
@@avery4528 I’m talking 2.5l straight six-itcould be the new Tr6 lol
@@paulbugoni2846 just get a bmw e46 325i
@@avery4528 already had an E90, have an X3
How comfortable are the seats with that strip in the middle? I couldn’t stand the CX-50 seats with the stitching straight down the center.
I would like to see Mazda take this platform to a sedan. Give Mercedes, BMW and Audi some competition. I am looking forward to the driving episode.
Yes a new 6 or 9? That’d be awesome
They've actually confirmed that they're doing a 6 on this chassis with this engine. Due to be excellent
@@the-boring-car-guy that would be nice, a more affordable alternative to a m340i/330i
Unfortunately it won't sell well
@@weirdshibainu it would sell some but I’m not too sure how successful it would be. People like me in my demographic would definitely consider one. Mature buyer in the 30s-50s, want something nicer and not cheap like a Hyundai Kia, don’t want to spend over 60k on a BMW, still want something RWD with enough performance to not feel like a Camry. If they could make it and have it priced $10k under BMW Infinity and Lexus then there would be a lot of interest. We all know Mazda has the know how to make dynamically fun cars. Doesn’t have to be as fast but it needs to be fun to drive and have reasonable performance.
wow, beautiful suv inside and out. looks like it'll age very well as the cx9 did. cant wait to see the driving impressions
Very good review...been looking at lots of reviews from this Corporate reveal. I own a CX-9 Signature with the Auburn and real wood interior. This new CX-90 will have to jump over that very luxurious bar if they want to charge more $$ for this one in top trim. A WHITE interior will have a 50% take-rate at best and certainly not purchased by ANYONE with kids....so will be very important for Mazda to have top trim color options (unless they've completely lost their minds in management). I am ready to pay $58K if I have to for the loaded out model....but I hope it will be
What are you doing, man, giving Mazda ideas?😂
Don’t say you’re prepared to pay $58k for the CX-90. Let’s stick to $55k.
You took the words out of my mouth. The only exception is I'd like a rich navy blue color with brown interior. I don't have kids, and even for me a white interior gives me pause.
It’s pretty, the PLUM/wine paint is beautiful! The interior and buttons makes things simple ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sadly, the weather did not really cooperate for one to fully appreciate how truly stunning that 'Artisan Red' color is. Seeing it in person really enhances the car - especially after seeing the Red and the White (PHEV) side by side. The Red Soul Crystal will still be on offer but Artisan is the way to go.
Anyone seeing BMW X5, especially with those wheels that looks like the ones you get on the x5m competition looks amazing but keeps that price below $65k even though Mazda always have been more expensive than the its counterparts
I was waiting for your video! I am hoping this design improvement trickles down their lineup!
This is so nice. Was sold on an RX. Not so sure anymore. I’ll wait.
Price is going to be some important here. Mazda will need to prove themselves before they can charge big prices for their cars. If the Kia is FWD V6 for 52k I feel like RWD I6 can command just under $60k fully loaded. They need to keep the msrp starting with a “5”
Starting with a 4!
This is not an X5, Q7 or Mercedes GLE. It's a mainstream offering with premium appointments. Think Ford Explorer Platinum or Acura MDX. Please do it justice by pitching it amongst its true competitors so it has a respectable chance of success. BMW X5 x-drive starts off at $63,900 and tops out with a starting price of $108,900 for BMW X5M. I think the product would be spot on topping out in the mid $50K range as you suggested at the end of the review
I was initially hoping that this would be priced like a CX-9 or Telluride, but after seeing it and hearing that Mazda is comparing it to XC90's and MDX's, I now expect it to be priced like one of those...which is kind of a shame.
Excellent preview and analysis. Thank you! I love the long hood and shooting brake rear. The color is gorgeous and the interior looks high quality. This should be a home run if they can keep the price right.
A MX6 sports car or a MX9 tourer with this powertrain would be slick and sleek. Would a convertible be too much to ask for? 😬
Always love to hear your thoughts man! Hope to see you soon!
I am now driving a Kia Sorento PHEV top trim which is very satisfying. As a car enthusiast, lately I have been itching to trade in my Kia for a Lexus RX PHEV (which has not come out yet LOL) until I heard about the spec of this Mazda CX90 especially with its PHEV version. It will definitely be a better value than a Lexus RX PHEV with more room and possibly better driving experience. I will keep a close eye to see if the PHEV CX90 will possibly qualify for any federal tax credits here in the US.
put that engine into the CX-50 and I'm sold !!!!
Kind of crazy this thing has almost as much horsepower and torque as an mdx type S and prob for about $20k less
I'm curious if the CX-70 is going to be the same as this, only smaller?
I bought my wife a 22 CX-9 Touring Coupe black on black and we love it!!!!! I personally, was hoping Mazda would do a bigger crossover. I'm waiting on the drive. Does it come with a turbo as well? A variable turbo with an inline 6 would be amazing!!!!!!!
Outstanding design overall including the wheels
Yep, them wheels is extraordinarily round 👍🏻
@@bjarkenielsen8515 And not Black +++++ *****
Would liked to have seen more of the dash and console with that dark interior.
Obviously, now that the three-row crossover is done, the real play is to follow up with a smaller model crossover, and then make an urban pickup bed model of each. The success of the maverick shows Americans just want a pickup bed no matter what.
If they can keep this between $45-60k I’ll be shocked and impressed.
I am guessing the low end trim will be in the mid to low 40s
Shocked and dismayed, you'll be shocked I'll be dismayed
I too am concerned with how expensive this top-trim model will be (the one with maple wood trim.) Hopefully I can buy a slightly less amazing interior on a lower trim level that still gets me the I6 turbo mild hybrid drivetrain. If the newest Pilot is $53 grand, this could be mid to high $50k or more. Maybe their goal is to sell the 2.5L hybrid powertrain as the mainstream vehicle and the I6 is the "halo" vehicle. But please also bring the CX-70 soon, with the I6 powertrain. That ought to be reasonably fun to drive! Also - any info on suspension? Strut front? Double wishbone? I hope the rear is not a twist beam like the CX-50...???
I'm not a fan of the rear end (I'll hold of judgment until I see the CX-70) - but overall - I like it. Excellent first look - thanks!!
Yea. Rear look likes a oversized forehead. Not sexy at all. Everything goof besides rear snd curvature of rear.
The rear end is my only reservation on this design. Reminds me of a big, current gen Mazda 3. Going to reserve judgement until I spend more time with the car in the wild.
Mazda’s commercial on this was spectacular
I'm in love with this already. Waiting to see how she drives. Kudos Mazda. Kudos to you as well dear Moto Man. 👍
Would to of loved to see the engine and maybe the rear differential lay out and such.
I would have loved to show it to you but sadly, all of that was off limits for this preview.
Aimed squarely at telluride and palisade, maybe XC90. Don’t think it’s aiming at highlander. Pretty exciting, let’s see what the mpg will be.
This is not aimed at an xc90 that competes with Mercedes and bmw this is still mainstream
If this is ~200" like a Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and prices better as a rwd-biased SUV, it is a winner.
Owned a 21 CX9 for a couple years. It's a fantastic vehicle. I've had friends ride in it and think it was a Lexus. These new straight 6 engines will be great. The 3.3. will be offered in a 280hp and 340hp versions.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 exceeds the quality of automakers around the world. This is a great car.
They need to bring back Mazda6 to US
magnificent presentation, loud and clear sir! thank you very much.
It's a beautiful vehicle. I'm patiently waiting on the new 6 Mazda. Audi, BMW, & Mercedes all offer sedans and wagons. I'm sure you can give them a run for their money.
I have 2019 CX9 Sig and love the new style. Suspect the price to be mid 50k.
Well done, Motoman. There really was some useful information in this presentation.
My pleasure!
More reliable than the X5? The B58 motor in the X5 has proven itself very reliable and has had its problems worked out (thanks to help from Toyota) and the ZF built 8 speed transmission is amongst the best in the business. The CX90 on the other hand has an all new motor and lower fit/finish. It's a budget X7.
Finally, 340hp and 360 tq from a mainstream suv instead of 260-300 n 260tq like most .lol
This will definitely be my first Mazda.
Love Mazda but why is the screen so small? 1/2 the size of other brands.
Rain or shine, MotoManTV will deliver.
That straight six is probably going to be buttery smooth and with the electric motor diesel like off zero.
In-Line 6 cylinder ,,,, can’t beat it,,,,,it is very reliable
I own a CX5 best vehicle I have ever owned. As far as price point for the CX90 a fully loaded gas CX90 is the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus according to the Mazda website is $59,950 before options.
Mazda is doing so much better now after dumping ford
Yep so much better
Wonder if the middle portion of the mid row is removable
Does it come a premium warranty?
Soooo when is this vehicle available for purchase?
I have always been a fan of Mazda since the days of the original RX-7 with the Wankel Rotary engine , circa 1979. They have always produced good-looking, well-engineered vehicles, and this new CX-90 is no exception. Gotta check it out, will be interesting to see how it's priced.
I like the explanations. The presentation is technically balanced. No bullshit. Oh!, and, really nice, neat car. Love the exterior.
What's with all the Buick-like chrome accents?
I think the base model could start in the mid 50s. The Infiniti QX60, Tahoe and Acura MDX start in the low 50s and have naturally aspirated old school power plants. This is a much better power plant that’s more Competitive with the Acura MDX’s powertrain at $67k and that’s where I expect the vehicle to top out. Mazda seems to be following BMWs approach from the 80s to early 2000s
Only difference here is that Infiniti and Acura are both luxury brands, they may not be as luxurious as others, but they do fall in that category. Tahoe has also always been a bit more of a luxury option given a Traverse can fulfill the same job just as well for less. I think the best approach for Mazda to take with this car is to become the Japanese Buick, i.e., Attainable luxury.
Buicks were always just a bit nicer than the standard fare, but not nice enough to challenge Cadilliac. Mazda occupies that space very well right now. It is certainly nice enough to challenge some of the lower trim levels of true luxury brands, and it is leagues above what its mainstream competitors provide.
@@michaelkovalsky4907 I could see Mazda going in a similar pricing and market direction to Acura. I would classify Acura as premium, attainable luxury with a somewhat sporty flair. They have nice products such as the MDX, RDX, TLX, etc., but they undercut their similar luxury offerings in both features and price. I don't see Mazda CX90 competing directly with more luxurious/high-performance offerings like the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5, or Genesis GV70. I do think the CX90 will compete directly with Acura MDX, Lexus RX (or maybe the upcoming TX), Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and Volvo XC90 due to their likely similar pricing and product type. I would classify all of these as premium, near-/entry-level luxury 3-row crossovers. Lexus does have a lot of brand recognition (more than Acura), but most of the SUVs and sedans are front-wheel drive based. In general the gap between luxury, premium, and mainstream brands seem to be increasingly blurred. I only see this happening more as we move towards increased electrification.
Greetings from southern Ontario Canada I really enjoyed the video I like the idea of 3 engine choices including a phev an 8 speed auto and towing 5000lbs fyi the toyota RAV4 prime is 70kms on a charge so hopefully Mazda CX90 will travel further thanks for the presentation
Enough with the toyota comparisons
Nice job Mazda!!👍
I love it! Please bring back the Mazda 6!!!
That opening statement felt like a jab at Honda products, but we love Honda. And if you don't drive them, especially SH-AWD , how can anyone critique or say any negative comments??? And it also looks like copy of mdx tail light design
Totally agree! the king right now is the Telluride... They should price it to compete with that, ant the high end german vehicles... or Genesis
I like how it looks. 👍
I like that it has an inline V6.👍
I like that Motoman will drive it. 🙂👍
I think this is the best thing from Mazda in a while also the CX 50 is also very nice thanks for the review can't wait to hear what you think of how it drives!!
I read reviews from people about how uncomfortable the seating is in the CX-9's on long trips. Hope Mazda has improved this because comfort and reliability matters more to me than glitz and glamour. Would hate to spend $50,000 plus on a vehicle and have to go get seat cushions or foam cut outs!
@Alabama Those comments were from owners of 2021 Mazda CX - 9's. Don't want to spend $50,000 on a vehicle that is painful to sit in within an hour.
Low 50's would be nice but I'm going to assume high 50's or worse....
Never knew a BMW I6 to be unreliable. Smooth, and quick yes.
The interior exterior are nothing super ground breaking, I am really excited to see how the new platform pans out. It's already been available in the CX 60 and reviews sound fairly good about that. I used to own a 2010 CX 9 and it was a great vehicle so I hope this is as well
@Alabama AHAHAHA go cry about it. While you get mad at a comment about Mazda we are out here bettering ourselves! Lazy ass
@Alabamayea if you were so rich you wouldn’t be making racist comments on a UA-cam review about a Mazda with a fake UA-cam account. You live in your parents basement in a run down house let’s get real.
@Alabama You sound like a 40 year old greeter at Walmart. Your account is three weeks old, and all of your comment history surrounds defending the CX90. I’m going to take a wild guess and assume you work for Mazda, and you aren’t based out of the US.
@Alabama what are you saying?!? I never said I hate the cx-90, if anything I’m pushing a family member to put a deposit down on it instead of getting their Sorento. You’re also assuming I live in India ahah.
@Alabama Sounds like your American blood has got you thinking you’re better than everyone!! Freedom right?!?
At least my Indian blood has pushed me to better myself and not make racist comments towards people over a car company.
Compared to the new Lexus RX which lost it's silky quiet demeanor using a very unrefined sounding turbo 4, this CX90 will be sublime. Will be interesting to see if they can attract a diverse demographic. Keeping the price affordable will be the key to that I think.
so in us crossover means suv?
This powertrain is astonishing. After what feels like eons with companies like Subaru and Nissan doubling down on lifeless CVTs I can't believe the courage of Mazda to really invest in something so much more engaging.
The CX-90 and 70 only come with turbos, AWD, clutchpack auto, hybrid, and inline 6 with compression ignition. None of that increases reliability, just the opposite
Lol lifeless cvts hahahahaha I like that
I call them transmission-less transmissions
I had a civic brand new 10 miles on it
It was a beautiful car but it came with a CVT transmission .. It was such a beautiful car with a garbage transmission that it snapped on me at under 40k
I lost the transmission around the time I just paid the car off ..
I learned about CVT I learned about there unreliability and how they are cheap for the manufacturer but expensive for the consumer
I found out Mazda the only brand out there that does not use CVT at all on any of there cars from the 20k all the way to the 35k
Beautiful cars with a basic decent transmission?
I'm game
I got a Mazda 3 hatchback and a cx5 best purchases I ever made
MAzda 3 already at 45k and runs like a dream

Holy... this CX-90 could be a potential replacement for my Kia Telluride in the future. As long as the PHEV comes with AWD 🤔
all cx-90 models will have AWD. They already do with their current models like the cx-50 and cx-9
And it's an RWD-biased-AWD
May I ask what difference between inline 6 and v6? I think v6 is much better right?
@@ihavenohandler29 The CX-90 and 70 only come with turbos, AWD, clutchpack auto, hybrid, and inline 6 with compression ignition. None of that increases reliability, just the opposite
Good question. That is referring to the layout of the engine design. With the V6, the cylinders are arranged in a 'V' shape, with 3 on each side. In the case of this car, the 6 cylinders are arranged in a line. The benefit of the V6, the physical size of the engine is shorter, so the OEM can package it into smaller places - hence the reason you see this in FWD applications. The inline six is inherently smoother and provides an advantage in torque.
Have the same questionable torsion beam rear as other Mazdas on a $50-$60k suv?
Awesome looking Mazda. Looking forward to seeing these in Aus.
Wow looks sexy af, way better then any bmw suv. Nice interior, love that they kept the control knob way safer, way quicker. Hopefully we get a sedan with this new rwd platform and inline 6, that would be epic like the mazda 6 concept, that was the sexiest 4 door car ever, I would buy that car if it handled decently was rwd and driftable. This probably drives better then any modern bmw suv, because of how heavy they are and numb. Plus the crystal soul red is the sexiest paint job on any car ever in history.

My 3 series is rear wheel drive and I prefer that. It’s cheaper than x drive and it feels really good on twisties… honestly, I never found a difference against 4 wheel drive haha.
Modern traction control and snow tires make AWD a tough sell unless you are in a very snow prone area, at least to me. Added weight, complexity and worse mpg aren’t worth it in most instances.
