I remember as a kid watching the network premiere of Superman The Movie. It aired over two nights in a row with additional scenes. Back then it was a tv event.
The scene where Supes talks to his father about 'Being revealed to the world' just after hes saved Air Force One. That scene should NEVER have been dumped on the cutting room floor. It adds a ton of depth to Supe's loneliness, being reminded that Jor El's holograms are teachings recorded from another time. So beautifully done.
100% agree and when he stretches out his arms to hug his biological father only to snap back to reality and remember it’s a hologram and he’s not there. Beautifully done! It’s another reason I love the special edition!
In 2006, when the Donner Cut came out, many of us fans immediately realized we needed to combine Donner and Lester and produce a complete cut of S2 that brings in all the best of Donner, while keeping everything worthwhile from Lester's version. My version was called the Verisimilitude Cut and featured an original opening and title sequence. It was very satisfying to know I wasn't missing anything when I watched the V Cut of S2. I got the Paris sequence, all the Jor-El footage from Donner, the pink bear reveal from Lester, the extra Lex/Eve footage from Donner, and all the slapstick stuff in Metropolis taken out, resulting in a very satisfying complete experience for me. Now that all of this footage exists in much higher quality, I should do a new version! Anyway, from one Superman geek to another, I can honestly say that a good solid fan cut of S2 is the way to go and then just watch the special edition of STM, like you said It's definitely my go-to version for the reasons you mentioned. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Kryptonite Cut!

I a big Superman fan myself but my favorite movie of the reeve Superman movies is the Richard Lester version of Superman 2 because it feels more like a complete movie over the Richard Donner version cause of them having to use whatever footage they could including test footage cause so much was actually unusable when putting it together and the problem of the original intention of the movie being a 2 part movie before 2 part movies were really a thing and it’s odd seeing the ending of Superman the movie as the ending of the Donner version of Superman 2 even though it was originally intended to be then ending of part 2 but budget issues caused the plans to change and part 2’s ending was moved up to be Superman the movie’s ending so they could just finish the movie and get it out

the donner cut is not what we would have had if donner had stayed on in the first place. its basically a series of deleted scenes. its a pity donner didnt finish 2, or that he turned down Ilya when he offered to have the movies re-edited in the way Coppolla did for the godfather saga. that would have been in the 80s and the actors would have been available for dubbing lines and the costumes and props would still be in great shape for any stand-in/doubles doing pick up scenes
You should watch Superman II: The Hybrid Cut. It's the only version of Superman II I watch any more. When the Donner Cut came out I was ecstatic as well but it is really not much more than a novelty due to the nature of the way it was finished it is still an unfinished cut of the movie. The Hybrid Cut blends perfectly the best of both versions of part 2.
