My local model railroad club (which is nearly two hours east of this one) is located in the basement of a church. The club president (who's a member of said church) told me that when he first started the club, he had a small layout in one corner of the basement while the rest of the space was utilized by the church youth group. After the church disbanded the youth group, he and other members expanded the layout until it reached its present size of about 30' x 60'.
