"It's beliveable that a show like this would exist."
It does exist. Long Lost Family on ITV. That's why they got Davina McCall.

Also, there might be manipulating of perspective going on. Did Ncuti do something between "maybe I'm the bad luck", walking back to his Tardis (as if to leave)...
Then he just magically shows up, doors open, different costume.
Something happen there? Mrs Flood manipulating the Doctor to take Ruby perhaps.

I noticed the costume change too. Hadn't considered that might mean he had been somewhere else.

I’m 60, watched Dr Who from the Hartnell days; not every Doctor or era is my favourite (the 1980s weren’t to me but they’re not that bad either). The Chris Chibnall era didn’t particularly appeal to me but I certainly was not against having a female Doctor; I just wasn’t particularly enamoured of the writing and felt Jodie Whitaker (who is marvellous in other roles) might have either been miscast (the role needs a particular ‘Who-ish’ charisma) or possibly not given the chance to find the character to portray. However, her Doctor is loved by many so who am I to say what’s right? To me, Dr Who isn’t dead. I’ve seen it reformat so many times and the heart of it is still there for me. I loved the 60th specials and the Christmas special and looking forward to May 2024. RTD always knew that fan pressure didn’t convince the BBC to bring back Dr Who in 2005 - the BBC was sold on the general audience (including fans but families/people of all ages - and that includes the present generation of children/young people) reinvigorating the show. Trends, cultures, politics will come and go, society will continue to change and reflect the concerns of the time; and one day, 2023 Dr Who will look as creaky as 1965 Dr Who - but the charm and wonder of the series will still be there. Hope I’m alive to see it. 🙂

I'm sick of people who don't like the 60th and christmas special, understandable for jodie's era because the writing was terrible but people who hate these specials are just so used to mocking and hating on jodie's era that they nit pick at every tiny detail that is slightly different to what who is "supposed to be" which is stupid, like what's wrong with a little change. I for one love Ncuti he's doing such a great job and I think he's going to revolutionise who for the better

I do find it disturbing but alas unsurprising that there are fans of whatever opinion but unable to debate calmly and generously, insulting people and apoplectic with a kind of self-righteous anger - which is what The Giggle is about. I love The Shallow Proclamation’s channel because people mostly think before posting and seem to rein in this ‘shouting but not listening’ syndrome a bit. The irony is that many fans of this character who evolved into someone who prizes kindness, peace and reconciliation have turned into the very monsters and paranoid villains who the Doctor has to end up defeating. We all need to walk a mile in each others’ shoes - I include myself in that. The human world is angry enough in real life - why fall out over a tv show, for goodness sake. 🙂

@whovian1012 @slutty_raccoon69 @rebeccaburgess8710 these comments are lovely to read. Watching Wild Blue Yonder in particular gave me that same thrill and pleasantly spooky feeling I recall from Dr Who that I’ve had ever since over 55 years ago when I was a very small kid. The Christmas special was of course light and frothy for Christmas Day and I’m sure there’ll be creepier episodes; the Doctor is still a magical figure and it’s lovely to let go of being the calcified, fossilised grown-up one can become if one isn’t careful and have that wonderful feeling one remembers from long ago. 🙂

Gerald Flood was the voice of robot companion Kamelion in the original series, so obviously Mrs Flood is a re-built Kamelion taking the form of the next door neighbour to watch over Ruby growing up. Obviously.

Regarding the Beatles episode: Judging by the hair styles and clothing, I'm guessing it takes place in 1966 - that's around the time that "Revolver" was recorded. Now, the episode title is supposed to be "The Devil's Cord", so my guess is that the closing track of that album ("Tomorrow Never Knows") is the focus. That song is famous for pushing the boundaries of music at that time because of the backward guitar solo and the various tape loops the Beatles used. (This theory thanks to my sisters who introduced me to the Beatles' music at a very early age.)

When you accept that this reboot (S1) is not being made with you or me or any Classic Era fans in mind, it's easy to let go and just enjoy a bit of sci fi silliness.
The 15th Doctor was following the trail of Goblin bad luck, not Ruby. Is why he was at the club trying to blend in, when he discovered this fresh incarnation has some moves.
I'm not sure it's even being made now with what we thought of as New or Modern Who fans in mind. I believe version 2005 to 2022 was retired with the 60th Anniversary Specials. That whole span was likewise it's own thing, a fact us older Classic Era Karens struggled with I know, hence all the NotMyDoctor BS that frankly we should all be ashamed of.
Ruby is not acted well, so far. She was indeed bad at freestyling the song - hence "nice to diddly deet you" when she ran out of ryhmes - but the actress failed to convey that as a more recognisably "real" moment. She may be a whole different character a few more episodes in, fingers crossed.
Younger fans, kids who grew up with Modern Who, now young adults themselves, are literally lifelong fans, too. Their canon, their go-to quotes and stuff, none of it's mine but I'm done telling them that they or the show are "wrong." They're not: it all happened... just not to "My" Doctors.
I think Mrs Flood is just a side character from the upcoming Beatles episode. "Not seen a Police Box on the streets of London for 50 years" suggests she was involved in a Tardis adventure when she was young. Or not - I'm not that invested one way or the other.
But it doesn't rile me to not be the target audience. None of us here are. There's a whole generation of kids right now who will take this new Doctor and the ones that follow, for real, as "their" Doctor. We don't need to convince them it's not as good as it used to be - one look at what's on iPlayer will be enough to convince them we're talking out of our collective behinds.
At the risk of sounding like I'm about to break out in song, Let It Go is the moral and I'm glad to have arrived at this point. It's been quite a journey - RIP Doctor Who - Long Live the Doctor

People try to say that Disney don't have a say in how Doctor Who is produced, but everything I have seen since RTD came back screams Disney.
Portraying Davros as a stereotypical able bodied mad scientist, cute aliens, goblins, musical sequences, NPH's turn as the toymaker... it's all bland typical Disney fayre you would expect to find on D+.
Anyway, I gave RTD 4 chances to bring me back to the show, but I just can't.
Doctor Who continues to be awful. I'm going to stick to just 63-89 from now on.

To me it’s not a million miles away from “Rose” in 2005. It’s all about establishing the characters more than the story for new viewers. When I watched that episode as a long time fan, I knew who the autons were, I understood the references of them coming through the shop windows and their hands becoming guns. I knew what the Tardis and who the Doctor was before Rose did. What jarred was the Doctors regional accent, him wearing a leather jacket and also getting involved with his companions mum! My point is lots of fans from the classic hated this and thought the show was going to die ! It didn’t! For me the musical part was a bit like the Doctor being kissed or slapped or being suggestive to female companions regularly. Uncomfortable and not what happened to Jon Pertwee. Different because it’s not what we’re used too. I think you’re Father-in law is good test of judgement of somebody without investment of being a fan and just a viewer. Remember the 2005 show brought in a whole new fandom with its changes. I was never a fan of the romantic element around the 10th but I understand why it was necessary. I was all of a sudden talking to these folks that laughed at Doctor Who fans suddenly become enamoured with the story of ten and Rose. Doctor Who is fine and RTD is repeating what he did in 2005. P.S I think Mavity is a big clue to the world we inhabit currently. Also the word luck. 14 wishes 15 good luck. 15 says he thinks he’s the bad luck and Mrs flood knowingly wishes Ruby Good luck. Also I think Mrs flood may be susans daughter. She recognises the Tardis but not that Doctor.

I enjoyed it but a lot more on second viewing. I just never enjoy watching with the family but unlike the New Year specials they loved it. I'd say it’s the lower end of the good Christmas specials. Re Mrs Flood looking back I thought it was more surprise when she dropped her bags as though at that point she hadn’t realised it was a TARDIS. I have no problem with the programme heading into a fantastical era, it’s not something it’s really done before apart from Toymaker, Mind Robber and various takes on myths. Bit like my favourite era the Hinchcliffe years did Gothic horror it’s something new keeping the show fresh. I like the idea of a Doctor into fashion and really enjoying himself with no baggage. That’s how I took the clubbing scene, Did you notice that the woman who was watching Ruby's band playing was the same actress who played Issac Newton's servant? Reckon there is something going on there. And I wonder if the hand that took the gold tooth was the Jinkx Monsoon character? And if Mrs Flood is Iris Wildthyme, it really should be Katy Manning from the audios with her big hat or to follow the musical theme the Shirley Bassey incarnation in the novels.

Definitely not my cup of tea, but then RTD's last stint on the show wasn't either.
To be honest the only nuwho I didn't totally hate was the Matt Smith era, and early Capaldi.
This, what ever this is is anathema to me. Sticking to watching reruns of the classic era and the occasional Big Finish audio.
In my head canon Doctor Who ended with the seventh Doctor & Ace walking off into the sunset.

  • @andrewbowman4611
    @andrewbowman4611 9 місяців тому

I genuinely like your idea of Mrs Flood being an alias used by Iris Wildthyme. I mean, we've had the Meep from the comics; why not have a character from the novels? There's also the two characters played by Susan Twist in this story and the earlier Wild Blue Yonder. She's Isaac Newton's housekeeper Mrs Merridew in the latter, and the woman who requests Gaudete in the former. Is she a recurring thread? It's certainly been suggested that she's the figure in black seen from a distance. Are she and Mrs Flood in cahoots, perhaps?

    Paul: I hate Musicals.
Me (Circulating with guests): Oh Paul, Have you met Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber?
Coming to this fresh (in that I've never seen Gatwa or Gibson) in anything before, I do feel that the show had recaptured an essence of other-worldliness which has been missing.
At the end of Twice upon a Time, I'd have selected to join the retcon First Doctor over Jodie, and in truth after the bi-regeneration I'd rather be tucking into crumble with 14 and Donna and Mad Aunty Mel - BUT I've far more hope for the series than I've ever had over the era of the 13th Doctor.
May 2024 can't come soon enough for me.

I agree with you Paul i reckon Mrs. Flood is definately a Time Lord and i too would be disappointed if that turns out not to be the case but "if" she is i hope it's someone we don't know like a new character because i think having Susan, Romana, Rani or Master is getting very predictable at this point.
Speaking about companions and their families call me old fashioned and i know this is a popular trope with NuWho fans i will say i like Ruby so far i still need to see more but i'm kind of getting abit over with the whole companions with their families it's not a soap opera it's science fiction i want to see the Doctor going to other planets fighting Daleks and Monsters with laser guns i've got no interest with a companions personal life but that's just my opinion.
The Goblin song has quite grown on me abit and has become catchy and they've done a really great job with the goblins but i will say i was very shocked to see The Doctor and Ruby sing it feels like an entirely different show to what we been watching since 1963 it's a great episode but it definately feels like Disney Who.

I agree with many of your points here. I didn’t watch on Christmas Day as I was so disappointed by the bi-generational stuff as it’s not really regeneration it’s turning the Doctor into a tapeworm. I watched this on catchup. I hated that the Doctor manages to prevent a glass from falling in the nightclub by moving from one place to another at superhero speed! Past Doctors may have been in clubs or dancing at weddings but they never fitted in and were very much the outsider but here he just fits right in! RTD as I’ve said before doesn’t quite understand the Doctors character. I thought this episode was just average. I hope RTD gets new writers in otherwise we could end up with the same goofy, cheesy, silly tone. My favourite Christmas special is Last Christmas because the dream crabs were the stuff of nightmares and I adore Peter Capaldi. Great reactions. Hope you had a great Christmas and a happy new year to you both.

It's not exactly a minority view, but IMHO the best stories during the RTD1 era were written by the other writers. Not that RTD is "bad" (far from it), and RTD1 was a great era overall, but for me Davies never quite nailed the Doctor's character as well as Steven Moffat.

A really good, balanced, in-depth discussion, which is nice to see when so often the debate over the show gets hijacked by the extremes on both sides of the argument. Personally I found most of the episode an unengaging plod, which only really came to life after the timelines were changed. Ncuti and Millie showed definite promise as a Doctor-companion team, and it will be interesting to see how their relationship develops. The idea of the goblins thriving on coincidence was a good one, but wasn’t developed enough for my liking and I got the impression RTD wasn’t really that bothered about them, to him they were just window dressing with the real focus being on introducing Ruby and her family. The trouble with that is I thought Ruby’s family were a bit bland, and the pace seemed unusually slow for modern Who. The goblin song was pretty cringey, and I hope that’s the last song we get in the show for a while, as it’s a device which has been used quite often recently and the novelty is wearing thin.
Ultimately, I think Paul is right that we have to reserve judgement on this new era until the next series has been transmitted. I have no idea who Angie Watts (making her second big impression on Christmas Day, 37 years after Dirty Den handed her those divorce papers) might be, but I wonder if she has some kind of imperfect memory block that allows her to remember some things but not others, which could explain the inconsistencies Paul was talking about. My favourite rumour regarding the upcoming series is that the pop group we see are not the Fabs but actually John Smith and the Common Men, as discussed by Ian and Susan in the very first episode…

I accept that each era of Doctor Who feels different and the show always develops. That's why it's succeeded for so long. However, it's always felt like Doctor Who. The biggest change was between the classic era and the new version in 2005 but it was still Doctor Who and I still enjoyed it as much. This just doesn't feel like Doctor Who, it feels like a parody.
Even Jodie Whittaker (as much as I wasn't keen on her portrayal) felt like the Doctor. This one doesn't. This is no longer Doctor Who, it's just a vehicle for pushing the BBC's political agenda. I have now reluctantly given it up after more than 50 years.

_"This is no longer Doctor Who, it's just a vehicle for pushing the BBC's political agenda"_ - It might reflect what's going on in society, as most drama tends to do. It might reflect the writers' world views, in the same way that most drama does. I'm sure it's not pushing "the BBC's political agenda", because "the" BBC has no single agenda, and people can - and do - read different messages across the Corporation's huge range of programmes.
