My grandfather andrew cheevers was wounded at the somme he was 44 years old when he went over the top. I used to visit him at foster greens hospital. So I was in the presence of a ward full of somme survivors. The Rev ian paisley came to my house in north Belfast to take the funeral service, my grandfather was 98 when he died.
My grand Uncle William Kane fought with the 36th. He was killed at the Somme 6/12/1918 and his body was never found. The Theipval memorial bares his name...
I do not agree with these men political wise as they wanted to uphold tje 1st January 1801 Acts of Union amd I don't but their sacrifice in the Somme was heroic for their cause even if i don't like their cause.
