I went the opposite direction after my MPC was just too unreliable to work with. I lost 8 years worth of beats after the power supply went out on my MPC 5000. Turns out that the 5000 was a hunk of junk as they have known issue with the power supplies that would overheat and prematurely fail. They would go into a bootloop. Mine went In bootloop 3 years. It sat broke for three years before throwing it away outside to the dumpster. I went back to sequencing in th DAW and never looked back. I still have a lot of hardware as I own 5 sound modules such as the MOTIF Rack-ES, Fantom-XR, Integra-7, Proteus 2000 and Mo Phatt moduels. I sequence those on Studio One Pro all hooked to my MOTU MIDI interface. I'm basically Hybrid now as I use both soft synths and hardware all sequenced in my DAW. The workfow is far superior making sequencing on hardware dated. It's a pain in the ass dicing through tedious menus on a tiny as screen. It just took to long to copy and paste parts to piece a whole song together. Sequencing on Hardware is really only good for making 8 bar loop tracks. There's less chance of losing files on a computer as you can make backups and can easy be converter over from one DAW to the next. It's much harder to get files off of hardware esp if the hardware is broken not able to find parts for it that's obsolete.

I feel exactly the same. Basically using Isla S2400 as a main piece. It has the same sound and amazing filters as Emu or Rossum 1200 with some nice extra options that don't distract from the workflow.

Yeah I feel you, man. I have scaled back my interaction with my computer for making music like 60%. I need to connect with an instrument and a machine to make effective tunes and I’m still scratching the surface. I reserve the cpu for final mix and master

I totally feel you on this. Software on the computer (and phone) gets to be just annoying and takes away the creativity... I haven't been making beats in a long time but still have my MPC3000. I plan to get back into it after I finish this other non-music related project I must finish, and have thought about what you mentioned quite a bit.
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned "headspace". That's totally it. You gotta be in the right headspace to do good work - no matter what you're creating. And if it means using old tools, then so be it. The end result is what matters anyway.
I'm not a fan of so many options, plugins, upgrades, crashes, versions, compatibility, etc etc etc... And a side note; now that A.I. is here, I can see that stifling creativity, especially when a lot of things are done for you. It makes one LAZY. Besides, anything created just feels better when you gotta work for it - you feel more content and proud of the work. AND sometimes you do one of those accidental things that tweaks the sample in a way you never thought about just makes a dope sound. It's not a preset but it's your own thing. That's the good stuff.
But yeah - I remember when I bought my first MPC3000 back in 1993 (haha, yeah when they first came out - and because reading an interview with DJ Premier made me want one so bad) and that's ALL I used. Nothing else. I recorded straight to stereo cassette, haha. But it MADE me work at getting the best sound that I could since I also had to mix everything inside the MPC before going to final stereo out.
I think when I get back into it, it's gonna be my 3000 and I might record into a UA interface with Luna (I've used it and it's been solid) since they have great tape emulations for recording and mixing. Studio One is good too. And maybe a little MPK (or similar) for playing more melodic basslines.
Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep at it!

Good video man! One of my mantras is ‘if it can check email, it’s not an instrument’ 😂 but having said that, I’m not ditching time stretching or equal chops anytime soon. I do feel that too many options make it easier to be the master of none. Ask me how I know…. 🤦🏽‍♂️ I always loved the physical connection with hardware devices and I agree on the quirks. I’ll be listening bro. 💯 ✊🏽

vintage gear is the best. my creative flow consists of rack mount synths an mpc/sp/s2400. sound is everything.

MPC 1k with JJOS is definitely my desert island piece. I picked up a Live 2 a couple months ago, and while it's fun to mess with the built in instruments, I don't really do much with it that the 1k couldn't already do. I'm going to rock with it for a while longer before I decide to keep it or sweep it.

Limitations do force you to be creative. It’s why I always feel a difference between my limitless daw tracks vs my Akai/Emu productions. Was all MPC60 based from 2011-13. You got my sub.

I feel the same way. I'm a big fan of using self-imposed "rules" to make music. And I like the tactile experience of hardware and the design/workflow elements built into those vintage machines. Not only that, but the lengths people go to to emulate vintage machines is mind numbing. People who are like "psshhhh, I don't need an SP1200, all I need to do is sample in this very specific certain way, then add this one plug-in and mix it with that plug in, run it through this custom program I wrote, then resample, then and add a certain effect, and .... [4 hours later]". The hardware that classic hip hop was made on played a big role in how it sounded and it's nice to play within those confines without the frustration of reverse engineering the sound. Absolutely nothing wrong with other alternatives though. Modern gear has endless possibilities but personally, I've always had a hard time working in a DAW. It's a vibe killer for me.

Just create on gear and stem everything in the box for mixing and mastering.

That's the problem. Technology becomes obsolete. No one records on tape anymore and tape is no longer in production. Your tracks are going to end up back in the DAW at the end of the day. So really here is no such thing as a DAWless setup in this modern era. I just don't understand why people attempt to go switch to this so called DAWless setup when you need a computer to record the track to.

Yup they made them to much like a pc why I like old machines with limitations lo-fi 12 Volca sample 2 but iOS iPad beat making feels so much better with aum cubasis 3 no plugs 🔌 and wires just 50 plus synths with koala and AUM is amazing and way more user friendly then pc software
