This is basically the only channel I watch where I see a one hour long video and think, "aw man, only one hour." However, this episode was amazing, Jim was HEATED for the first 20 minutes of it and then Ed drops the "Jim Davis" burn and kills it.
Just discovered these wonderful "Deep Dive" commentaries into the Back Issues of "Wizard Magazine." I have kept all of these back issues, and they capture such an incredible time in the comic business. I still cannot find the definitive Label for this era: "The Speculator Era," "The Chromium Age" (For All the gimmicks), "The Dark Age" (for the more pronounced themes of violence and adult subject matter). Whatever the nomenclature, pouring through these, literally "page by page," is an awesome endeavor, and you gents have nailed it. Thanks for creating!
In the Toying Around column, Cunningham rips on Bob The Goon but also wishes there had been an Alexander Knox figure. Dude was crying because there wasn't a Robert Wuhl doll.
the morbius midnight sons comics are so awesome I have issue 1 hung up in my wall next to lobo issue 1 among other comics I hung up in the wall. great video guys \m/
Bob the Goon, lol. Almost spit my beer out at that rant. This was the most of my era episode yet. God damn this really took me back. And it's only gonna get better. Fucking Deathmate.
When I was a kid in the 80's my friend's mom worked at a computer store, which is where Nintendo first tried to market the nes They gave the manger a nes and told the employees to bring it home to their kids to check out. I got to play mario bros, duck hunt, and a game that is one of my all time favorites pro-wrestling. Our minds were blown.
Further to the Ultraverse 'creator controlled' as opposed to creator owned and who gets paid, Malibu is now owned by Marvel and they've hardly published anything with the characters (either reprints or new material) since it's acquisition in the mid 90s because of NDAs apparently, so even if they get a percentage, it's a percentage of zero...
HI guys! Great episode! About Joe Quesada: probably worth mentioning Ash, his creator owned superhero along with Jimmy Palmiotti, published through Event Comics. Quite nice! Also, a short comment about Valiant comics: as a long time Kayfaber I know that neither of you are big fans. I wholly agree in the awful enterprise specifics of Valiant as a company, but I think that there were actually some very good comics published. Archer and Armstrong by BWS was ellegant, sophisticated and great fun (you really should dig it), there was literally nothing like it published at the time. The first issues of Magnus Robot Fighter were a great homage to sci-fi pulp and the first 10-12 issues of Solar, man of the atom are really something worth mentioning. There's also some great authors involved such as Steve Ditko. While definitely they never where a visual breakthrough such as Image Comics (I don't think that was never the intention, either), we can all agree that both Marvel and DC have been terrible companies to work for many times and that doesn't keep us from enjoying the comics that were made by great artists and writers for them :). Keep up the great job!
There's a great X-O Manowar that Ditko draws, issue 6 (?). It's so weird to see his art on a character like XO. He also drew some WWF characters, including an Undertaker vs Bossman comic. Weird. Another Valiant comic that you didn't mention - Harbinger. The early issues of Harbinger were favorites of mine. David Lapham art, Shooter script. That book was like a new X-Men featuring young people who looked like young people in a world that looked a lot like our world. I enjoyed that book, specifically the trade paperback since the original issues were out of my price range at that time. - Jim
@@CartoonistKayfabe Right on! Harbinger early issues were great, I read them many years later because they were kind of hard to find at my area. In fact, I feel they were the foundations for the first two or three TPBs of the new Valiant, also worth checking out. I concur in both cases in the feeling of finding a book that, at long last, protrays young people in a relatable way. X-O Manowar 6 was a nice Ditko! I also recommend Magnus 18 & 19 , and Solar 14 & 15 (which he pencilled and coplotted) both solid and enjoyable Jim Shooter scripts with solid examples of late era Ditko. Looking forward to more Kayfabe!
There’s a Deathmate Silver as well. Drawn by Joe Q. I’m sure you know it, but in case you missed it, dig it up! Also we got Soawn 5 in Australia. It just wasn’t on the local newsstand/newsagent. You had to know where the direct market stores where back then. Which where kinda few and far between.
Valeria #5 came out because it was part of a crossover storyline. Roughly 5 pages of art exist from Valeria #3 (which was supposed to be the Spawn crossover).
The only cards i saved from the 90s were the Madman trading cards set. Totally killer line up of creators, including some of the last work ever by Kirby and Frazetta.

Sorry, I couldn't make it all the way thru this one. I got to 37:59 before I couldn't take it anymore. For some reason there are a series of quick half-second video "blips" of the Wizard cover featured throughout the entirety of the episode.. I counted at least 16 of them, before I bailed. Could it be something that happened when you were putting the edit together? If I just had the Audio on, I might've made it to the end..
@@CartoonistKayfabe If it helps, I began jotting down the times it ocurred: 6:19, 8:51, 10:07, 11:23, 12:39, 13:55, 16:27, 17:43, 24:04, 25:19, 26:35, 27:51, 29:07, 30:23, 36:43, 37:59..
Aw, man! You passed over my "Amazing Artists" feature on page #52. A big deal when I was 19!

Spawn #5 was banned in Australia at the time. It was a nightmare getting a copy of it but I did :)
"It's a real shit-ass movie, man."

In another, more perfect world this would have been on the poster for Steel.
Kelly Jones is my favorite Batman artist. And loved Trencher. In fact I want a Trencher revival.

Thanks for highlighting Beanworld. It's such a wonderful story.
51:50 I have always viewed The Authority / The Ultimates as starting a new era in superheroes.
Everybody had a fuckin Bob the Goon..

Damn, son. Ed getting fired up like hot wings in Hell. Gotta love it!

im probably the only person disappointed the Spawn /Valeria x-over never dropped
HAPPY SUNDAY! LET'S DO THIS!!!!!!
Hell yeah next Wizard is my first one.
The only cards i saved from the 90s were the Madman trading cards set. Totally killer line up of creators, including some of the last work ever by Kirby and Frazetta.
in the movie, bob the goon handed the gun to the joker so the joker could shoot him. a true goon till the end.
Hannibal King Is a midnight Son character, and I think it's Ryan Reynolds's 1st roll as a comic character in Blade Trinity.
I've hardly played PS4 games this week, and I blame Rugg and Piskor. This channel is damn fun.
Jim getting steamed at the 6 minute mark over Malibu’s “creator controlled” claim is hilarious. More Rugg Fury!
OH WOW! I didn't know anyone else in the world knew about BEAN WORLD!!!!
Jim is pissed as f... this episode!
I don't know how they do it, but watching re-runs of these episodes doesn't feel repetitive.

Yikes. This happened a tiny bit with the Akira vol 1 vid too. Thankfully there's been no trouble since the latest Apple Update.
I thought it might be Fight Club subliminals (1 frame nudity) :)

Yeah, it's off, but not nearly so jarring that I'd stop watching. Weird glitches sure, but the content is absolutely quality 🤘
Wizard magazine was crap. Their price guide was totally inflated. They served as a big monthly advertisement for Image Comic.
