Wish I had someone like you to give insight and advice before my basic at Ft Jackson 36 years ago! You're doing a good thing, young man - from a former Finance soldier.
Some folks make rank really fast in the Army. When I was a 1st LT, my platoon sergeant, an E6, was younger than me. He’d gone from E1 to E6 in the MPs in 4 or 5 years. I’d worked on a couple of degrees so I was 24 at the time. It was a bit odd having him ask me things that I’d normally be asking my platoon sergeant, but it worked out.
The biggest no one will admit to is favoritism, if your team leader, squad leader and platoon sgt likes you, they will try to help you get classes or recommend you to the 1SG and CO...Classes are not that easy to request, it depends on how much your Unit has for that fiscal year
Find an MOS that is in very much in demand with a very high ASVAB requirement. You will make rank much faster than other MOSs. Once you are promoted to the senior grades, hold your tongue while dealing with those whom are not so well educated as you.
National guard you can get promoted for recommending someone and as long as they enlist you will be promoted. Also for stripes for skills test you can get promoted. Essentially you can come in as an E-1 and do both before you ship and go to basic training as an E-3.
I worked at battalion headquarters and drove officers all the way to LTC. I ranked up pretty fast, I say. Some dudes in the company level were surprised that I was an SPC before them.
For the most part, I agree with everything that Matt is saying here, but I just want to clarify a few things. I was a personnel sergeant, so enlisted promotions was a big part of my job. Junior enlisted promotions are done at the Company level. Promotions E1 through E4 are automatic promotions as long as you meet the time in grade and time in service requirements. However, if a Soldier is flagged on the effective date of promotion, this essentially blocks the automatic promotion. Once the flagged is lifted, this will require a personnel action to get the Soldier to the new grade. What Matt is talking about in the video is called promotions with a waiver, which means accelerated promotions. But, something that Matt does not address is that these are capped at the Company level, so every Company will have only very limited number of waivers that they can award. Therefore, many times volunteering and sucking up to your NCOs won’t make much of a difference.
I started as an E-1 in Basic. Made E-5 at 12 months, and E-6 at 36 months. It's doable, but it also helps to have great evals and test scores. Also, learn to avoid using the word "basically" in every sentence.
I just joined the Marine Corps Reserves at 20. When I leave for boot camp August 2018, I'll be 21, with an Associates Degree. I've told my recruiter that my goal is to score a 300 on my first PFT, so hopefully I'll be on the radar for early promotion.
Natinal guardsmen here. Came in as an E4 because I had a bachelors degree. Stayed enlisted because I'm an idiot. Didnt get E5 til 5 and half years in because I kept putting off going to BLC to focus on my civilan career. Went to a modified BLC course (because of covid) on the tail end of my first deployment. Really wish I had been E5 for the duration of deployment. It would have made me a lot more money.
Hey Matt, hope all is well. In your family day vlogs for Tim’s graduation, I saw you had the rank of second lieutenant and in this video here you talk about being a specialist how did you go from NCO ranks to an Officer rank? Sorry if I’m late. I’m a newer subscriber and just following up on your vids.
OCPs are wayyy better than my crappy ACUs. The food is pretty good. It just depends on how hungry you are lol. MRE's are just MREs... lol Some good some bad.
If you havn't received a letter from him yet then wait until then(I assume you have though). You can send him stuff after that. Also, you can't send candy/food of any kind. No books/magazines or other reading material besides a Bible. You can send him pictures but for us we were not allowed to get a lot of pictures, so only send like 5ish at a time so that he doesn't get them taken away. If he doesn't have a watch, I would send him one. My parent's sent me a watch at basic after I asked for one in the first letter. Just a cheap $10 one will be fine. Other than that I would just send him a letter asking him if he needs anything. Keep in mind, anything you send that is not allowed will most likely be thrown away! Hope this helps, good luck to him! Benning is tough but it makes the best soldiers :)
Hey Shootemup 89, I took my asvab yesterday and make a 51 on it.... it's not the highest but my recruiter said that I'll be able to get a 91 bravo and that's what I wanna get. But my MEPS is next week. And thanks for the feedback, I like OCPS way better to.
Yeah, that should be fine man. You can look up yourself the exact scores you need for each MOS and not just the ASVAB. Look at the individual subject requirements. And to your other question OCP is Operational Camouflage Pattern. Eventually we will just refer to it as the new ACU pattern once it is fully phased in.
What do you think of bit coin? as and investment, when you enlisted I'm sure you get a nice package. As an unmarried soldier with no kids is it smart to put some of your pay into bit coin?
Apparently it’s been six years since It’s been nine years since I graduated from high school and I use to be in the Army JROTC, but my former SAI said he can write a memo to my recruiter that proves I was in the JROTC back then but regardless does that mean I still would only get promoted to E-2 instead of E-3
Is basic training different for an 11 Bravo or is basic training pretty much the same for everyone? I ask because you went to Ft Benning. Thanks for the videos!
They separate the 11B from every other MOS within the first hour or so of Reception and they put you in a different company. 11B does OSUT so they couldn't be in the same company as other MOS' anyways. Aside from that everything is basically the same. I still had drill sgts who were infantry that even just came back from a deployment. It's more like Benning as a whole is different from any other BCT location.
Took me 5 years to become an E-4 in Marines. E-1-E-3 was cake walk. Then it gets hard. How does your branch determine if you become a specialist or corporal?
Corporal is something that you generally only see on deployments and it'll just be by needs of your unit. It's prettyyy rare to actually have a corporal in the army.
I don't have much experience with this. So idk if I could do a full video on it. But it kinda varies depending on your unit needs and if your unit needs the mos that you want to switch too. But I wouldn't go in thinking you will switch because it may turn out to be harder than expected.
It appears that Army does not allow first time enlistments to exceed the rank of E-4 with exception of officers. E-4 is earned by entering with a bachelor’s.
Azra I don't know much about that really. I just know that apparently after BCT you go back to the same barracks and it's like basic as far as having the same Drill Seargants. You get a different hair cut and much more privileges but that's really all I know. I went to Fort Gordon for AIT after Benning.
I only know what my SAI told me. Then again he's been doing this for a really long time. Regulation could have changed, for more exact info, try to talk to the JROTC teachers or call your local recruiter.
2 years of jrotc gives you your certificate of training which means you enlist as E2 and 3 years gives you the certificate of completion but I don't know if that starts you off at E3 if you're not from ajrotc.
Basically..... Corporal happens when they need somebody to be a SGT but can’t promote somebody for whatever reason so they “promote” (not really a promotion) a specialist to corporal which is the losers NCO rank. Just so that the former SPC can command a small team that doesn’t have an NCOIC (IC is in charge)
could you make a video on how ROTC is like. I'm leaving for basic on June 5th to fort Benning then fort Sam for AIT and I want to get a 3 year Minuteman scholarship for college and I want to know what it's like. thanks
+EDGE SIEGE Either E-2 or E-3 depending on how many credits you have. How many college credits do you have? Basically if you have 2 years you come in as E-3. 1 year is E-2
Currently in a community college and have 78 credits I finished my associates but have been taking classes to transfer to university. Would I be promoted to E-3 after boot camp? I want to enlist sometime soon was watching some of your videos to get more of an idea on a few questions I had
I'm joining the reserves and my recruiter told me most likely I won't get the MOS I want. Did you get the MOS you wanted? I want to join as a 31 bravo but no recruiter just crushed my dreams of getting that MOS. Also at AIT can you certified in whatever your MOS is?
Yeah, my recruiter told me it is really unlikely that I will get the MOS I wanted 25B. I did get it though. I just came back later that week to check the list again. The problem with the reserves is the only MOS' available will be based on the units near where you live. So if you want to be 31B then there may not be any 31B slots around you. But I would maybe just check back later. That's what I did because I didn't want to join unless I got that job.
Yeah, right away. I graduated from AIT Dec 16th and started back college that Spring semester. Which was about 3 weeks later. You just have to make sure you enroll and sign up for college classes at AIT so that you are good to go when the next semester comes around.
Shootemup89 ohhhhhh okay thanks alot cause I was confused about the whole school process. Was there anything as far as school that you had to pay for? I'm sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions
We had an E4 that was like 300+ pounds. I didn't know the whole situation, but I'm pretty sure that exceeds the weight limit...and it couldn't have happened overnight.
I did, and was a CGSC Resident Graduate; and Regular Army joined at 18, did a three year enlistment; did college quickly on GI bill, and was a Field Artillery Officer; retired at 42, get $6K a month clear and full medial benefits. Hah, Hah
Got that one on my list. It will come soon enough but good question. In the mean time, Google is available. There are a lot of ways that I just couldn't explain in a comment.
Let me be specific, referring a friend and him/her enlisting as well gets you promoted and pay grade/rank, not specifically to E3. College credits, referring a friend and JROTC are the ways I know of to enlist at E2
"They" would be the slacker guys who don't want to rank of fast lol But there is truth to that in some situations but for the most part volunteering makes your chain of command like you a lot more
Double xp weekend
This is an extremely underrated comment😂

This comment help me alot. I'm about to enlist in the army
Put this somewhere, where it matters
this is pretty good
Is this glitch patched?
Yes they patched it weeks aho

I head to fort benning in the middle of February. Thanks for all your advice brother

More time than I care to think about. lol
@@MattWard89 Is there a particular time of year to go to BCT?Obviously I wouldn't go in July August but what do you think?
I worked at battalion headquarters and drove officers all the way to LTC. I ranked up pretty fast, I say. Some dudes in the company level were surprised that I was an SPC before them.
I got my sergeant stripes in 3.5 years. Being in the 82nd Airborne, you gain rank pretty quick because of terminations from Airborne status
Firsbt Lastbb hoahhhh!!
Pro-tip: Dont say rank up unless you wanna get smoked. The term is promotion. Its not Call of Duty, anymore
Lol, why not? I'm tickled by the idea of snuffy asking his Drill about ranking up.

Nice new intro!! Leaving tomorrow at 0500 for Benning...thank you so much for helping me prepare for it.
Thanks! Figured I needed to add a little something to the video haha.
You're welcome man. I really am happy that these are helping you guys out.

Haha thanks. Yeah this is a few months old, getting better every day
That is awesome. Any words of advise? Been working hard for just about 2 years. Just picked up my E-4. What would be the best way to reach E-5 fast?
Lol I'd like to know how these exceptions happen since TIS is at least 18 months
That’s bullshit
that's bs because even with waivers that can't happen

Probably college
Does supply (92y) get promoted fast? For Active Duty. Also can 2 sgts with the same supply job be supply in the same company?

Why do the points for promotion increase?? Example..88m was 40 now it is approx 700.
Can you make a video about AIT at Ft Benning, I know it's OSUT but I would like to know about the second half
Azra I don't know much about that really. I just know that apparently after BCT you go back to the same barracks and it's like basic as far as having the same Drill Seargants. You get a different hair cut and much more privileges but that's really all I know. I went to Fort Gordon for AIT after Benning.
If you’re at the bottom of the totem pole, you’re actually the most significant/important person of that pole...
If I were to go into the army as an E-2 as a sophomore in college, would I be able to be an E-4 when I graduate college?
How where you able to start off basic being a PFC?
Gabe Roberson probably had college credits already
4 years of jrotc
Do JROTC. 3 years gives you E2.4 years gives you E3. For the Army, that is.
Angel Noose in high school ?
Yes, JROTC is High School level.
Angel Noose I looked up in google it says 2 years gives you E2 is that true ? & 3-4 gives you E3
So what is exactly are the boards? Jw... define
Hi Matt, can you explain the difference between specialist and Corporal? Seeing different stuff everywhere I read... thanks!
I'm leaving for basic on June 5th to fort Benning then fort Sam for AIT and I want to get a 3 year Minuteman scholarship for college and I want to know what it's like. thanks
For sure, I was planning on doing an ROTC related video this week
Can you do some videos on meps and ways you can get deferred?
Travon Guy yeah that's right. Just go in there and talk as little as possible and don't bring any attention to anything.
ive got a question I'm in university right now, what rank would I start in the army?
+EDGE SIEGE Either E-2 or E-3 depending on how many credits you have. How many college credits do you have? Basically if you have 2 years you come in as E-3. 1 year is E-2
Shootemup89 ok so I'll be E-3 then
When was the Last battle field promotion ???
What if u done jrotc for 3 years in high school can rank to E-2 or that works?
Currently in a community college and have 78 credits I finished my associates but have been taking classes to transfer to university. Would I be promoted to E-3 after boot camp? I want to enlist sometime soon was watching some of your videos to get more of an idea on a few questions I had
You would enlist as an E-3. I believe over 60 credits is the cut off for that.
I am about to start gcse s what gcse s do i need for a medic officer?
Are there any exceptions to the E3 to E4 rule if you're prior service? Thanks.
In basic/AIT?
What if you're prior service PFC ?
What's your opinion of the Corporal Rank (Army)?
Be a Airborne and a Ranger helps me to ranks up in the army ?
Yes being Airborne will help. Being a Ranger is just like amazing for promotions and getting picked first for promotion
Shootemup89 Thanks you ! The army right now offer me 25U with Airborne and Ranger school in the contract with a 30k bonus.
That's what I did because I didn't want to join unless I got that job.
good looking out and thanks for responding back. do you know how soon you can start going to college after you enlist in the reserves?
Yeah, right away. I graduated from AIT Dec 16th and started back college that Spring semester. Which was about 3 weeks later. You just have to make sure you enroll and sign up for college classes at AIT so that you are good to go when the next semester comes around.
We even had a few people take just like 1 online college class while they were at AIT. Since my AIT was long, so it lasted the whole semester.
Shootemup89 ohhhhhh okay thanks alot cause I was confused about the whole school process. Was there anything as far as school that you had to pay for? I'm sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions
ohh and what does OCPS mean ??
People trying to rank up me trying to get out !!
Why is it that some people stay at E3 for six years??? How do they pull that off? Why
We had an E4 that was like 300+ pounds. I didn't know the whole situation, but I'm pretty sure that exceeds the weight limit...and it couldn't have happened overnight.
Any one joining the army in ny bronx hit me up if you are too and not shiping out before the 11 of November I'm trying to get in an e2
Whats the max rank you could get?
Satan
6 star general
what kind of things do they ask you during these boards/interviews?
All kinds of questions about anything and everything
Whats you're MOS?
It was 25B which was IT Specialist. Now it's going to be 25A Signal Officer
Say I go in the army and get a rank. Then I leave. Then I come back do I still have that rank.
That depend's how long you were out I was out for about a year and half and retained my e-4 sham shield
*dad why is the fbi here?*
How do you go from PVI to LTC?
+Larry Pryor spend at least 20 years in the Army. Lol
I did, and was a CGSC Resident Graduate; and Regular Army joined at 18, did a three year enlistment; did college quickly on GI bill, and was a Field Artillery Officer; retired at 42, get $6K a month clear and full medial benefits. Hah, Hah
What are ways to get promoted so you wont come in as an E-1?
Got that one on my list. It will come soon enough but good question. In the mean time, Google is available. There are a lot of ways that I just couldn't explain in a comment.
easiest way IMO is to get someone to enlist as in refer someone and youll go into basic as an E2
Have enough college credits and you enlist at E2, get a friend enlisted on buddy system and get promoted to E3, PFC
Let me be specific, referring a friend and him/her enlisting as well gets you promoted and pay grade/rank, not specifically to E3. College credits, referring a friend and JROTC are the ways I know of to enlist at E2
College Credits.
Got any hacks for free cod points and supply drops??
You got to get demoted to get promoted.
What is a pfc
Mark Murillo Private First-Class
Pennsylvania Fried Chicken
They say never volunteer
"They" would be the slacker guys who don't want to rank of fast lol But there is truth to that in some situations but for the most part volunteering makes your chain of command like you a lot more
Shootemup89 going in as e-3, what's the fastest way to rank to a e-4 ? Possibly e-5
can i skip to sergeant from private first class
+savagepie savagepie No definitely Not. Gotta go through SPC first.
savagepie savagepie In your dreams, you can do anything!
savagepie savagepie I know they say no question is stupid but...
Is it possible to go from E-1 to E-3 in basic?
you'll go to e2...
you need 48+ college credits to become an e3
