My grandfather until he died couple of years ago always had his little tradition to go to the café in the morning around 7 a clock where all the old-timers gathered, read his newspaper, drank one rakija and a coffee to go. Every damn day :)
Zmaj is not a serpent, it is a dragon. Though, he got his nickname by mistake. In one document, the date beside his name was written without a dot (3. maj) and in Cyrillic , so he turned out to be - 3MAJ :)

Nisam ni ja znao. Čovek se u stvari zove Jovan Jovanović Treći Maj. Možda su mu namerno promenili ime u Zmaj da bi ljudi zaboravili taj datum i slobodu i rodoljublje i ćirilicu i sve? Reklo bi se da su i uspeli u tome.

Every city in Serbia is European, only the architecture of some cities survived the bombings from the Second World War and later the communists, and some did not. Belgrade was occupied by both the Ottomans and Austria, and was razed to the ground several times. Belgrade had beautiful European architecture before the Second World War, but it was crippled by over 2000 beautiful buildings, bridges, monuments, etc. Now it have communist blocks, lot of new modern buildings but also still has beautiful old architecture in Stari Grad and Zemun and some buildings destroyed in WW2 are planed to be built again like old beautiful post office near building of old railway station. Serbian Orthodox churches have several styles Raška style, Moravian style, Serbo-Byzantine / Eastern Roman or Vardar style and combinations of Baroque, Classicism and the previously mentioned styles. To me, all Serbian cities are beautiful and unique, but if I had to single out the most beautiful, there would be Novi Sad, Belgrade, Subotica, Sombor, Vršac, Valjevo, Šabac, Kruševac, Smederevo, Niš, Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Zrenjanin...but there are also a lot of small beautiful towns and ethno villages. By the way "ZMAJ" is dragon in Serbian and "ZMIJA" is snake, but we also sometimes use word "GUJA" for snake or serpent (it is usually used for venomous snakes).
Communists also deliberately destroyed all original Serbian architecture style and most buildings designed by Momir Korunovic who developed original Serbian style.

@@franzjosef7728 Yeah, that can be true. But you have Negotin in East Serbia, which is not so Ottoman looking town. It has a wide center and preserved European architecture.

The orthodox church was built in 1720 and then "upgraded" in 1850, while the bell tower and dome were probably renovated in 1903. This is the typical style for Serbian Orthodox churches in Vojvodina, but it also appears quite frequently in Central Serbia. The style itself varies between classicism, Austrian baroque and Ruthenian baroque.
Treba dodati da je taj stil nametan od strane vlasti, jer su smatrali da se srpsko-moravski stil naših crkava ne uklapa u arhitekturu gradova Carevine. Onda su vlasti Kneževine Srbije, u želji da se približimo Evropi, preneli taj stil u novu državu. Tako da je u periodu od 1830. do 1914. izgrađeno više crkava ovog stila.

There is 0% chance that someone from Novi Sad didn't know that that was a synagogue, they were either not from Novi Sad, or any surrounding area I might add, or were confused by the question, and were thinking that there is some official name for the synagogue that you were asking about and that they didn't know. For example, the cathedral in the center is not actually a cathedral but a church, called Name of Mary Church, which is a name not everyone in Novi Sad would know if asked, to people of Novi Sad it is known just as The Cathedral.
In Serbian "pravo" means straight (in the sense of a direction), while in Russian and Slovak it means right (also in sense of direction). In Serbian right is "desno". But pravo in Serbian has more meanings, one is /right/ but in a meaning that something is right, correct the opposite of wrong (imaš pravo / upravu si = you're right) and other is /law/. I don't know how it is in Polish, Ukrainian and Czech languages. Also "Zmaj" means dragon and "zmija" is a snake/serpent.
In Polish "pravo" means right, and "prosto" means straight. So enjoy the confusion of "brotherly" languages!
"Pravda means " The truth" in Polish, in Serbian means "justice". In Chech it 's the same as in Polish, they have motto on their state coat of arms: "Pravda vitezi" which means "The truth vins". In Serbian "vitez" is a knight, so that' s happened when some words starts from the same root, and then get different meanings in different languages.

In old fashioned Russian "десница" means the right hand
in Serbian as well, especially in the old epic songs.

Так сильно ожидаю ролик из крепосты))) а только что вот посмотрил.
Кстати, если интересно, тут недавно музыкальный фестивал Егзит был. Разные иннострание также как и сербские артисти тогда были и так каждый год есть. В центре тоже надо парк посещать, там есть маленьких озеров в которых плывут красывие белые лебеди))) Парков и лесов в Новом Саде не отсуствует.

Я из швеции и я изучаю русский. Я заметил что есть русский слов который тоже есть по шветский, на пример "тротуар" по швецкий "trottoar". И я думал почему? Я нашёл в интернет что много слов например "тротуар", "Бассейн" "квартир" все из француский. По всей видимости в прошлом багатые люди в швеции и в россии часто говорил по Франсуский и именна поэтому у нас есть та же слова для эти вещи.
Очень интерно факту которого бы я не знал, если бы не изучал русский язык.
Я вам больше скажу, были времена (во время правления престола Романовых) когда среди приближенных царя, от чиновников до царицы были люди, которые и вовсе практически не говорили по-русски. Так что не стоит особо удивляться такому обилию франко и немецко адаптированных слов в современном русском языке.

Новы Сад, по русски Новы Посад. Сербии в 18 веке создали эти город. Поет Змай ,детскии поет , первые стихи которые моя мать мне сказивала были его стихи. Самы большой детски поет у нас.

Здраво Макс, кад дођеш следећи пут у Нови Сад, волела бих да те одведем у Музеј Војводине и да видиш тврђаву на Петроварадину где се одржава фестивал Егзит. У јеврејској синагоги се често одржавају концерти класичне музике. Катедрала имена Маријиног је католичка црква, а иза ње има и православна црква . Иначе радим у школи ,,Јован Јовановић Змај" као наставница математике и преко пута ње је музеј чика Јове Змаја, песника чији је споменик у центру града. Можемо и тамо да одемо. У школи где радим има Русе ученике, а кума ми је Украјинка. Сви ми нажалост памтимо ратове из деведесетих 😭😭😭 и не делимо људе по националности, вери,...❤️❤️❤️
Привет Мах. Я был в Нови Сад нескольких лет назад. Меня очень нравится город и прекрасный замок.
Если вам нравится этот город, я рекомендую Суботицу. Он тоже немного похож на Санкт-Петербург.
Никогда бы не переехал из Нови Сада в Суботицу, там дохрена +50 мигрантов...
Город мне очень-очень понравился - если судить по Вашей экскурсии! Необыкновенное ощущение испытываешь! Главное - тихо, мило, чисто, уютно и КРАСИВО!... В таком городе хочется жить...

Привет Мах! Мне очень равиться ваши ролики показани города, и другие места. Я венгерска. Новы Сад културным центром. В католическом соборе ты видел информацию по-венгерски потому что 5-6% насиления венгерские и город административным центром венгром живающие на севере от города ближе к границе. Возможна учиться по-венгерски в школе и тоже на университете в городе. Если ты смотриш газети в киоске ты можеш найтьи венгерский газет издан в городе. Тоже играет венгеский театр.Посетите Суботицу, возможно, она еще более европейская.

If you go straight from Nikola Pasic street where you have walked, you get to street called Kisacka and there is restored house, where Mileva Maric Ajnstain lived. Ajnstain was there with here many times. Across house is old restaurant where they both liked to hang out. There is a plate on house and restaurant also.
Hey Max. I am very glad that you came to my city, and you liked it. If you come again I would like to show you some more cool places, and perhaps talk on Russian over some beers. There is also a Language Club every Thursday in Cafe Radio in the city centre, where there is a lot of russians, and people from all around the world who meet there to speak their native tongue with eachother and with language learners.

Novi Sad is vastly superior to Belgrade in terms of humane living.
I've started watching your videos about Serbia, Max! Спасибо! Now, I myself am from Belgrade, but just a hint about church dome in Novi Sad. All the churches built in Austria-Hungary had to look the same, so that no christian group would be distinct from another. At least that is how I had been taught in school. Especially in smaller places in Vojvodina, Croatia or parts of Romania (which were under Austro-Hungarian rule) this is mostly the case. Unless you read a board on the church wall or enter the church, you will not be sure which church is it. Churches built after 1992 all across Serbia and Republika Srpska tend to follow a more standard orthodox architecture.
Wish you visited fortress and Petrovaradin across the Danube, it is the oldest part of the city, and the fortress is 2 nd largest in Europe

Novi sad je duplo veci od Kragujevca i ima malo manje od 400.000 stanovnika. Novi Sad je multikultirni centar Srbije. U njemu zivi preko 20 auhtonih naroda. Srba,Madjara,Rumuna,Slovaka,Rusina,Ukrajinaca,Nemaca i td...

You cannot judge a church based on the architecture. Most architects went to the same schools and there are Serbian Orthodox churches here in Croatia designed by Croatian, Italian or Austrian architects. They look nothing like you would expect.

Intresting right? I was thinking the same.. I had Srbo-Hrvaški (Srbo-Croation) language in school only one year. I was sure that Srbski language is the most similar to Ruski, but my opinion is now, aft learning Russian language, that my native language, this is Slovenian, is much more releted in many ways. I was suprised.

@@barbarahren5208 , pred leti sem se 4 leta učila na gimnaziji, zelo z veseljem, celo hodila na tekmovanja, hotela študirati primerjalno slovansko jezikoslovje in ruščino, a sem bila edina vpisana in so rekli, da ni mogoče (čeprav bi lahko prek konzultacij, a nisem poznala svojih pravic). Zaneslo me je v druge smeri, zdaj, po dolgih letih pa ljubiteljsko obnavljam, nesistematsko, kot mi znese. Bi pa rada bolj intenzivno... In ti? ...
... Presenečena sem, ko včasih zaslišim Ruse, ki "pojejo" v notranjskem dialektu... 😂
@@davorinaable Jaz sem bila pripravljena na TROFL BII, k se mi zdi je že kar velik uspeh k nimam velik talenta. Učila sem se pri odličnih učiteljih na intenzivnem tečaju, po ugodni ceni (2x tedensko, cca 3solske ure, 200e celo leto in prireditve, bogata knjižnica... !) na RUSKEM CENTRU ZNANOSTI IN KULTURE, ki ga je pred kratkim slo vlada zaprla zaradi političnih razmer. Sem bila pa odločena it naprej, takrat so bili ponujeni od 3tednov naprej tečaji na glavni Moskovski univerzi, s študentsko nastenitvijo 15min stran za 900e, 3tedne Moskve z sobico v centru, lahko dalj, 300e doplačila na dodaten teden in ponujeni izleti od čet do pet(z ladjico po Olgi čez Nevo do Petersburga, npr.)... Sanjsko!
Zelo grdo, da se kdo spomni mešat kulturo in politiko. Sramota.

Here, I can try and share some history/facts with you.
The cathedral that you didnt know what it was is actually a Jewish Synagogue. Its not used for their Liturgy because there are very few Jews in Novi Sad, about 1000 so that Synagogue is used as a Theater instead.
Novi Sad is culturally very diverse city, as the whole region of Vojvodina of witch it is the capital of. There are many Hungarians, some Germans, Rusyns, Slovaks, etc. but the large mayority are of course Serbs. Even in the time of Austria Hungary the city was (in slang) called Razstadt - the city of Rascians. Rascia(Рашка) and Rascians(Рашани) is just another name for Serbia/Serbs. Rasciа was a name of medival Serbian state. It could remind you with its pronounciation of word "Russians" and "Russia". There is a theory that Russians got that name from the medival Serbian state. So its pretty cool fact. That just shows how closely related we are.
Even our language. Its, as I've read, about 72% simmilar to Russian. And I agree with that. I understood almost everything you've talked about without subtitles.
The city, as I and my family can remember grew very much in past 30 years. It was small town but now it grew to be a pretty large city(for Serbian standards). That happened because after the Yugislav war many Serbian refugees from Croatia and Bosnia came to this city for a better life, safe life to be exact. And meanwhile it became a main student-city of Serbia so its really popular and it attracts people to come and live here.
And the last thing, a man that you saw a monument of (Јован Јовановић Змај) is a person that is mostly known for modernising Serbian alphabet. You know, after the Turks, there was no Serbian dictionary. The language was preservet only because of people and the official language of Serbian state at that time was a mixture of Russian and Serbian and we also used an Alphabet that was similar to todays Russian alphabet or Church Slavonic. The probelm is there, that people didnt speak like that. But this man made a special alphabet just for us adding some new letters(Jj for example) and letters that were lost long ago as for example Ћћ and Ђђ and instead of writing ль нь as in Russian, he mixed these two letters and made љ and њ. He so got rid of some letters that we didnt need for example ь ъ ю ы й ѡ(o/od) щ(sht/shch) ѧ(ya/я) ꙋ(u) ψ(ps) ξ(ks/x) θ(soft t). And also (I am not sure about that) but I thing that he is also the one that made a first official dictionary of Serbian language which shortly after became our official langauge. The Serbian language you hear today is actually very well preserved medival language that normal villagers spoke. The problem is, all the medival writings were done in eather Church Slavonic, Slavonic or later the Serbo-Russian variant of Serbian but thats not how people talked. They talked (most likely) similarly as we talk today.

Важными местами для посещения являются Петроварадинская крепость и Сремски Карловцы.
Я думаю, тебе стоит переехать в Нови-Сад.
To Red Flower. Every city in Serbia is indeed European: there's little Ottoman architecture left 150 to 200 years after the Turk's departure. However, the cities in Vojvodina seem more European than the cities in the rest of Serbia. This difference seems to me to arise from differences in the value that was placed historically on architecture in its context of town planning. The cities of Vojvodina, an Austro-Hungarian duchy, had a colonial top-down administration; they were laid out and built as civic spaces and architectural structures, meant to reflect the administration's prestige and priorities. The cities of the rest of Serbia, a constitutional monarchy, were developed by independent developers without strict municipal or national coordination; they seem less European to visitors. This uncoordinated development continued until just before WW1 when architects like Jelisaveta Načić were appointed to put manners on parts of downtown Belgrade. (And I do wish the municipal authorities would reinstate Načić's layout of Terazije.)
Serbian cities located south of the Danube are less European looking. that's true. But I think that's just the visual experience. The spirit, people, and everything that goes with that in these cities is European.
There are different type of European architecture. Novi Sad is most 'baroque' Serbian city while Subotica is most 'art noveu'. The cities in rest of Serbia had unique European architecture mix of unique Serbo-Byzantine revival style with other european styles made in Kingdom of Serbia and later Yugoslavia but they suffered a lot in WW1 and WW2. While in north most dominant styles are 'baroque' and 'art noveu'. Kruševac, Valjevo, Šabac, Zaječar, Knjaževac, Niš ect. all of them have some very pretty architecture despite lot of been destroyed in WW1 and WW2 but the biggest problem is that it has been neglected and more importance should be given to the restoration and preservation of old buildings as well as other historical and cultural monuments. There is a lot to see in every place in Serbia, only some places are unfortunately neglected.
Well as you said well, this architecture is similar, like the Southern area of Hungary, not very much but still close to the Western Hungarian and Austrian architecture. The majority of these buildings (except the churches) built up after the 1867 deal, when Hungary agreed a dual monarchy with Austria. So the difference is the historicist style here, contra the medieval and baroque style, which is ca. 100 years older then these buildings. In Hungary Szeged and Pécs have similar architecture, like Novi Sad. On the North a bit different: more compact, much older - starting the baroque: Győr, Sopron, Eger, Salzburg, Graz, Ljubljana, Klagenfurt...
Also you mentioned that here the average is 1-2-3 storey buildings. This habit also was part of the AH monarchist style, where the importancy of the city measured with the height of the buildings. The real giant buildings are in Vienna, Budapest and Prague. That playing on same field as St. Petersburgh, but of course they development was different, more natural. (You cannot find buildings in Petersburgh which built before 1710, meantine these 3 monarchic capitols have streets from the 14-15-16th century)...
Meantime we can say, that Novi Sad is the southernmost place, where you can meet with the pure Central European architecture, it was a border town of Hungary before 1920. If you liked that you would try yourself, and if you have money, you can travel to North. Russian citizens not baned by the EU, and definately Hungary will not banning them in the future, because the only country in the EU which still have correct relation with the Moscow leadership...

Oh yes, in Serbian "pravo" means straight (in the sense of a direction), while in Russian and Slovak it means right (also in sense of direction), while right in Serbian is "desno". But pravo in Serbian has more meanings, one is /right/ but in a meaning that something is right, correct the opposite of wrong (imaš pravo / upravu si = you're right) and other is /law/. I don't know how it is in Polish, Ukrainian and Czech languages.

6:39 Слово "право" вообще довольно интересное. У нас в русском языке оно ведь тоже есть, используется как правило в юриспруденции. И как бы оно означает какое то моральное или юридическое значение(право на жизнь или собственность), и как по мне у сербов оно имеет именно тоже самое значение именно в обиходе - право значит прямой, правильный. а у нас же как мне кажется его значение несколько искажено в современно русском языке.
