    Drybrushing is an overlooked technique for quality painting, all you need to do is slow down a tiny bit (it's still really fast), and follow a few steps! The process is fun, approachable, and incredibly versatile, whether you're painting Warhammer 40k tanks or Age of Sigmar demons and organic shapes.
    As ever, if you have any questions please let us know, and we'll take all suggestions on board for future content! The most liked suggestion will win a set of our drybrushes, and a texture palette!

    I've used drybrushing with a glaze or wash on IPMS and MFCA competition award-winning miniatures and 15 - 54mm wargaming miniatures since the 1970's and I must say, you have done an outstanding job teaching people this often overlooked and disregarded technique of painting in what is the best instructional video to date on the subject! Well done.

      I totally agree! I think drybrushing has a super bad reputation in modern times, because there are a lot of fancier paints and methods out there now and drybrushing can look cheap/bad very quickly.
      So its nice that some high level/well known folks out there give this veteran technique some respect!

      Definitely don't use art paper or anything absorbent, that's why I prime mine. Absorbent stuff will dry your paint even further. # 1 tip is to get a cheap usb air humidifier for your painting area you wouldn't believe the difference it makes. Let us know how it goes!

      @@ArtisOpus Ok so I think I was drying the paint out way too much. Got very (dunno the word) craggy I guess? Like on the model the paint was very textured. So because it’s hot here I’m in air conditioning which makes the room very dry as well! I think I will invest in a humidifier for sure. Plus I did use the paper to wipe the paint off lol!
      Still. I did really enjoy the overall idea of using the dry brush. I can see it being something I will use a lot. Need to experiment with keeping the paint still moist and just keep at it!

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  Рік тому +2

      Hey buddy :). Absolutely, especially following our method, we don't saturate the brush with water so we never start that journey from tip to ferrule for the pigments, and the regular use of the dampening pad means we spend half our time cleaning/using the brush simultaneously.
      We have a lot of metallic videos on the channel, you could always have a single XL or L for heavy first stages (if you see brushes with a black dot on the back of the handle on videos this is my Metallic ones).

      No worries man.
      I just don't saturate my drybrushes, it's what begins the migration of pigment toward the ferrule, mine don't get soaked ever, unless it's a 'deep clean' which happens about every 6-12 months.
      3 drops in the dampening pad is fine for me, easily enough to lubricate removal of pigment, using the texture palette, especially with some soap on there.

      Hey David, this is a great question, and not an easy one!
      Easy answer: all whites lean toward chalky, so hold these in mind:
      Matte: more chalky
      Less white: less chalky (e.g. using ivory/off whites/bones)
      With that in mind, I use a dot of the ultra strong Bold Titanium White from monument very often, or Vallejo Ivory, etc.

    Your fingers after the shading are too rough for the drybrush. You risk reactivation, so a better way would be to use a lighter shade colour and just leave it on the details. If you don't want the raised areas to be hit, use a shade, not contrast. The shade will flow off the details, whereas contrast will stain it.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  Рік тому

      Hey buddy, I didn't remove the drybrush, because with skin contact you can perfectly judge what's going on, and with some medium in there it's basically a shade, I get where you're coming from, though.
      There's very little difference between some of the shades and contrasts these days, it's a bit confusing actually, skeleton horde behaves exactly like a shade, I feel maybe they have backed themselves into a corner, calling everything a contrast, to encourage people to use them.

    Drybrushing and overbrushing / buffing has always been one of the most flexible and effective method of painting models, miniatures, sculptures, etc. It just acquired a bad reputation sometime in the last decade. IMO, due to some very simplistic tutorials that treated it as a "dirty hack" - a cheap way of simulating a model painted in the supposedly proper way. These poor tutorials usually get awful results (messy, scratchy paint flecks everywhere) because they use brushes that aren't a good shape for dry brushing, or don't dampen the brushes correctly. (Taking the term "dry" too literally.)
    In reality there are a lot of cases where people have made things needlessly more difficult by not using these techniques. These ARE the "proper" methods!
