    I’ve been soaking found wood since October (2 1/2 months about) but I change water every 2 weeks with the first wash getting a tiny splash of bleach to sanitize but so that it will be cleaned away before being close fish. The way I did it for my big peices of wood for my 180 and 300 is go to theisens and get one of the big steel bucket feeders they sell.. They are roughly 23-25" around in a square shape, and use a turkey fryer burner to boil the bigger pieces! Works perfectly for these bigger pieces and much quicker than just letting them soak in water. Some of my bigger pieces would have taken a month+ to get water logged just soaking like this.

      What kind of wood is it? You’ll never get 100% of the tannins out, but the goal is to get out that initial big chunk (if you don’t desire it). It’s ok to have tannins in the water with your fish, it’s actually good for them BUT will lower your pH in the making.

This preparation is moreso for removing the tannins and soaking the wood so it won’t float. REALLY controversial opion, but if you have a really large tank (150+) you really dont have to purify it, just wash it clwan and leave it for a few weeks to let microorganisms die out. Thats what I have always done. Another factor is if it is small fish, dont so this with those cause they are sensitive, but it wont hurt large hardy fish. Same with rocks, as long as the rock is a nice kind with no bad minerals, just wash it clean and leave it in the sun for a few days.
    Again THIS ONLY APPLIES TO WOOD THAT LEAKS NO TANNINS AND SAFE ROCKS.

      It could happen for months actually! Most of the tannins will come out in the first 1-2 weeks though. After that, you should be good. It’s not terrible to have tannins in the water, it’s actually good for the fish!

      It will release the initial tannins from the wood and the untreated chlorinated tap water should take care of bacterias or fungi living on the wood.

    I spent $100 for a Malaysian driftwood. I soaked completely, rinsed, soaked some more on & on for over 2 weeks escalating my water bill. Tannins were still leaching so I gave up. A few months went by & I thought I would just set up my new tank & hope for the best. I put some cleaned black sand in, a few Val grass plants & some new rinsed off plastic plants. The water turned a bit dark. I have the hob running full speed with lots of floss that I change daily. 4 days later it looks like black coffee. I spoke to the pet store & was told to boil it for 8 hours... WTF!! Can you please help. No way can I boil something that large.

    • @LongIslandFishGuy
      @LongIslandFishGuy  3 роки тому

      Water changes will help clear up the water. The initial release of tannins is always the worst but after 1-3 months with weekly water changes it’ll get better and better. The tank will only get cleared of tannins after maybe 1-2 years, but it’ll be much less after the initial 3-6 months. Tannins actually are beneficial for your fish, so don’t worry! Just monitor your pH!
