They promised Palestine three times during the war against the Ottomans/WW1: to the French, the Jews and the Arabs - and before they even had gained control of it. You get away with acting that way as a global empire.

    • @robertdavidson8028
      @robertdavidson8028 9 годин тому

As far as robold x9171 is concerned - we certainly did for a few hundred years - or at least our ancestors did; at least to the 2/3rds or 3/4s of the world we colonised (along, it should be said, with other European countries who competed with us, but whom for various, including nefarious reasons no doubt, in a number of places we outmanoeuvred, all of whose which ancestors, incidentally may also be many Americans' (of European extraction) ancestors, not just ours - I'm English btw, - I forget the exact proportion of the world that one of the many American Commentators I listen to regularly - (including JS, JM, Col McG, SR, LJ, RMcG, Col. LW. Lt. Col.KK, Amb. CF, MH etc.) recently said that the British Empire had colonised - it may have been 2/3rds or 3/4s - but we beat off all competition and were the a**holes of the world, (probably the largest since Genghis Khan or the Romans) despite other European countries' attempts to compete.
However the same commentator said that the US had covered the whole world - thus implying a greater empire (albeit possibly not as long - lived - with all the good and bad that that implies - and as if that matters for any good reason).
As far as losing the empire is concerned I would never try to gainsay that; I know enough history, and am well educated enough (and too leftie) to be either Tory or in the current Labour party. So I am neither right wing enough, or silly enough (I flatter myself) to be puddled enough or blinded (by patriotism or whatever) not to know when we lost our empire, or to know what crimes we may have committed against many nations, including against the fledgling US republic, and what awful crimes and misdemeanours we (or rather, our leaders) have got up to, and still do so, often in support of people we should be having nothing of the sort to do with, along with many others on this island who may think similarly to myself.
Talking of which, I have an idea that the Nakbar of 1948, for which our British ancestors (particularly Lord Balfour, though I don't think he was entirely on his own) have a huge responsibility, having drawn up the declaration which bears his name in 1917, although zionism, (and thus the declaration) had been fomenting since the nineteenth century I believe. So, although we must bear the lion's share of the blame for giving away the Palestinians' homeland to a race to whom we had no right to give it, back in 1948 (a few years before I was born btw), I do believe that American forces were also involved, or even complicit, in that shameful episode which has turbo-charged a feud that was already ongoing, I believe. There's quite a bit of history in which both of our countries have been complicit - with one or other being leader of the gang (mostly yours I think). I tend to think America's range has probably been wider, and though the time period has been more condensed I'm not sure that your country may not have done more damage to more of the world than any other Empire - and is likely to do yet more before it is finished. So when your leaders say that there has never been such a powerful Empire I think that could be right (albeit with a rather short period of sole hegemony - thus far, at least, and many think your country's power could be on the wane); but what you have to consider is - how well it has used that power? How much good has it done? And how much harm?
And, importantly, may what may replace it bring more good to the world than it has done, or not? as far as we can tell, at least?
I think that is a sobering thought that should be born in mind when apportioning places on the naughty step, don't you?
Also, I would like to gently remind Americans, firstly that they are the only nation, thus far at least, to have dropped Nuclear bombs; also, quite apart from the list of wars that America has undertaken since the second world war - so starting with Korea and Vietnam and going on from there..... but also, the invasions and regime changes, whether it be of South American countries, or North Africa, and other places in Eurasia or the current destabilising of Europe (which hopefully will lead to the dismantlement of Nato - so, maybe we won't have to get dragged into any more pointless wars - unless, of course we carry on electing idiots as PMs who are as deep in the pockets of the Jewish Lobby as the American Government generally looks to be, and to be committed to staying in, unless they can manage to break away from the two party system that bedevils both our countries.
In the last 80 years, aided by technology advances, both in military ordinance , transport and computer technology etc. the rate of attrition seems to have accelerated beyond all belief and inexcusably, and I feel, as many of the commentators have said, that were it not for the superior cool temperament of some Easterly leaders (and one in particular) we could well all be smoke by now. I'm sure there must be many more, all over the globe, who realise that this is the case, probably with more evidence and knowledge of all sorts than I possess.
As far as the Financial Times is concerned, I carry no candle for it. I've never read it, except on one or two occasions when it may have been the only thing to read in a waiting room when I needed something to do. However, I do know that various commentators have said that, whenever financial matters are concerned, or geopolitics related to financial concerns, it is more to be trusted than just about any other "rag" (as we used to call them).
Whether its' politics are that measured I have my doubts. I have always (possibly wrongly) assumed that the politics of those who are drawn to the paper will tend to err on the side of the establishment, being as it is so concerned with getting money matters and the geopolitics which impacts financial dealings right. It would not surprise me, though I cannot claim to know, to learn that either it has a tendency to veer to the right a little, either when that is what its' clientele would prefer, and that doesn't interfere with necessary financial probity, or whether, at times, pressure might not be applied from above, whether editorial or further up than that, when there is a line to be towed.
So, to come to a conclusion, I don't think either of our countries have covered themselves in glory over varying periods of time. However, I do tend to think that most blame should attach to those who engineer situations and conflicts - and all sorts of unworthy shenannigans. There are many others who are more or less culpable, depending on how much they could be expected to know, and whether they turned a blind eye or not, or were able to make a difference, but didn't etc. I'm not a religious person, so don't expect to be held accountable by anything other than my own conscience. However I think that people in both our countries tend to become annoyed with one another, and blame one another too easily, rather than targeting our anger more accurately. The sad truth is, however, as countries go, neither of us live in a place with a very good record as far as I can see, whilst trying to be objective.
Alhough I find CF and JM a little low - powered sometimes, there are other times when I find, say, JS and SR to be a little more excitable than I would like......'swings and roundabouts as the saying goes. Apologies for the length of this, but I wanted to cover the ground properly.
In case JS should happen to see this (which I don't expect he will), I will just add that a little bit of this is for his benefit too (much as I respect him).

Balfour was a devout christian Zionist - a movement which dated back to the nineteenth century, and apparently pre-dated Jewish Zionism (something which ultra orthodox - maybe some or all(?) orthodox jews as well - I'm not sure - repudiate to this day) but, allegedly, provoked the interest and formation of Jewsh Zionism. There was quite a lot of it about in nineteenth and twentieth century christianity. My father was one; I wonder what he would make of it now were he alive? I don't think, at that time, christians / imperialists thought deeply enough about the implications; thinking you're doing God's work can have that effect. Religion can have very harmful "side" - effects imo.
You can find info re the declaration on the internet by inputting Balfour Declaration, should you wish. It gives an insight into the mindset.

Zionism arose during the 1890s as European ideology.
It basically slumbered along until WW1.
During WW1, as the war dragged on, the UK intended to bring the USA into their "side."
Zionism was one of the routes open to them, into Washington DC, since they already fought in the ME.
A trade-off was made, which stated that US Jwes would lobby Washington DC to join the war, in "return" London would help them create an own homeland, or state (of several options open in the British Empire, the most desirable was the "historical Israel").
That is basically the "nutshell version" of the foundation which was lain, since the region was already promised to the Arabs, as their incentive to fight the Ottoman Empire alongside the British and French.

if we was to listen to lots of the so called youtube influencers from india lately, and didn't know it was indian you could argue that one might actually think it was a racist or one sided british caucasian dude. You can't talk about anything positive coming from muslims, blacks/africans, or chinese, or global south as a whole with most indians lately. The people india go beyond to defend is americans and israelis no matter if is true or not. This is a perfect example. The guy is calling sachs 'naive" in his face and that he is wrong. Unbeliveable!
