I decided to replace both my capacitor and 2 pole contactor as maintenance items after watching Jay's video. Upon inspecting the old contactor, I found all 4 contact points to be heavily pitted. It was on the road to failure, for sure. The contactor cost me around $15 on Amazon. The a/c repair folks charge in excess of $300. Cant say enough good things about Jay's videos. Thanks so much
Thank you so much!! I'm 61 year old female and was replacing a contactor to an older Trane AC. The connectors were like the ones in this video, some were female connectors and some were rounded connectors. You saved me time of not having to change the round connector ends. I was going to go buy female connectors and switch them out. Original problem was outside fan was coming on but not compressor. I had AC repair come out yesterday and said I had a bad capacitor and contactor. He wanted to charge me $275 to replace a $9 capacitor and $309 to replace $26 contactor. I paid him the $75 diagnostic fee and told him I would do it myself and I did thanks to your videos.

Jay, you are the man! Your excellent tutorials told me everything I needed to know and the courage to replace my 15 year old capacitor and contactor that a service repairman said, during a routine PM, were close to failure. As in your video, my screw over connectors had to be crimped, but unlike yours, this was no easy task. I discovered that cutting open the ring with wire cutters and then crimping it, worked like a charm. Just a little idea you might want to pass along.
Watched this video and the other one about 10 reasons for AC short cycling and got a full understanding of how to work on the contactor. Super good videos and so thank you for the thorough explanation. I saved hundreds replacing the contactor myself and it was quite easy once I got comfortable with the instructions. Definitely follow all the safety tips provided in the video.
Very thorough explanation and clear video. The best I have seen-Thank you! I have a two 20 year old AC units and have started replacing the capacitors and contactors. The slide on connectors for the capacitors were very dull looking. I grabbed them with a needle nose and polished them up with a slim brass brush. I would recommend this easy step to insure the best connection. Also like your idea to crimp them down a little if loose.

Great instructional video! Been in a heatwave here in the northeast and Wed evening the AC unit was just just blowing hot air from the inside air handler. Went outside and the manganic connector was fried (27yrs old) Replaced that and figured I'd do the coil at the same time as that even though it was still good (at the 27 years old also, it just mad sense to do both.) Also take lots of photos for the wiring for reference as each unit is different and even jot down a few notes. Made the installs trouble-free. Both parts from Grainer came to $85.
Thank you so much. I'm replacing a very old contactor and had questions about the coil wires and the old style connectors. I did not think about flattening the connector to get it under that screw terminal.
Thanks for the info. The contactor will be my next preventive maintenance job on my 33 year old AC unit. Just replaced the condenser fan motor and capacitor because bearings were going bad. When you spin the fan you can feel the resistance with the fan spin on old motor. Once I get done with the contactor the blower/fan motor and capacitor in attic will be replaced this fall. Thanks for the videos they make it easy to do. Not sure how long this AC unit will last but after 33 years I got my $s worth already.

I just watched your video on contactors single or double pole and replacing a single with a double pole contactor and checking if a CCH is there, I think the tech should check the schematic before changing 2 reasons at this point CCH can be connected to L1 and L2 with a hi temp thermostat on discharge line to stop heater and important the K2 defrost relay BK wire placement on the contactor....
Had the same issues last week. I cut off the spade, and tied off the crimped end. I think its better since you wont have to deal with making sure whether or not you applied enough torque in the long run. keep in mind the terminals get hot and we all know what happens to metal when it does. Good luck everyone else!
Dan here, I watch a lot of your videos and think the are great. My comment is on your video "how to replace a contactor". You stated there was only one reason to not to replace a single pole with a double pole. I was watching other videos (not yours) , and other techs stated a single pole was necessary if someone had a heat pump, which required constant power. To overcome this, a jumper wire is needed to provide constant power on the always on side. It would be great if you could explain this. You explain thing so well. Thank.
Buy a spare one of these and keep them on hand. $15 part and easily replaced. Same goes for capacitor. I had my AC go out late in the afternoon and could not buy a contactor. Had to hard wire where contactor goes and use the main breaker by the condenser to use the AC. Worked great for that night. Make sure the thermostat is on so the fan runs while compressor is on. Next morning got the part and changed it out. Great video. Thanks
Thank you for the great videos, I've watched several, our heat pump has been running on emergency heat for a couple of weeks (propane) I discovered the single pole contactor had burned up one of the contacts, it's 10 years old, I ordered another on internet $12, should have it in a couple of days 👍
This video and a few of the others you had helped me solve my AC issue. Started off thinking it was the thermostat, after blowing several fuses, slowly rulled out each link in the chain. Turns out my contactor when testing only gave 1.2 ohms when testing it. I just got the part today and installed it! AC is working as it should!
Thanks so much for the helpful videos! My hvac won't cool, the fan outside isn't spinning, and after turning everything on using the thermostat, I can't turn the system back off again (fan on auto, system on off). Last year I had a similar problem with the unit not cooling and getting stuck on. Repair technician said it was the contactor and replaced it (had a power surge that took it out). This year I'm thinking that it has to be something different since I keep hearing that it's not usually the contactor. Thanks to your videos, I've tested both the capacitor (35+5 read as 34.6+5) and I tested the fan motor (got 55, 23, and 79 between the wires so it seems the motor is good too). I decided to finally look at the contactor before checking the compressor itself. After removing the contactor cover, I noticed the metal contact looks all scratched and pitted and there are black scorch marks. The plunger isn't stuck in, I can press it easily enough. But I'm wondering if it is bad. I plan on replacing it due to the damage but I'm trying to find out what is the most important features to keep in mind when buying a new one. I have a single pole and I'm trying to match up all the numbers exactly when searching Amazon and it's kind of hard to find an exact match. Wondering how important the FLA/LRA/RES are to get exactly matched right. Anyway, thanks so much for these helpful videos! So grateful for such educational information!
Great video my contactor had a big hole burned in the side, lots of corrosion and the plunger had fallen off. I think it must have exploded somehow. I’m going to install a new one tomorrow.
This was an excellent video, thank you for your high quality and attention to detail. One extra tip: Test your meter at the disconnect before trusting it reads 0 everywhere.
Hey, thanks for the info. I paid $8 for the contactor and companies wanted me to pay I’ve 10 x that just to do diagnostic. That’s not including their markup for this part and labor

Thanks Jay! My York contactor is burnt and pitted but shows 0 ohms when closed. I think because it was chattering like crazy and the arcing burnt it. Should I change the compressor relay too? Unit is 12 years old.
Thank you so much for the video. One question: is it safe to put two wires in the same terminal? I have a burnt out wire connector and I am thinking just strip the wire and put it under the screw. And there is already a wire under the screw...
Thank you for the help! I was able to replace my faulty contactor today after watching this, also converting from a single pole to double pole during the process. I do have a question though. If there is a crank case heater installed with a single pole contactor, is it still possible to convert to a double pole? It seems to me you could just move the necessary wires to the hot side to always be hot.
Kindly also guide us essential tools one should have in his tools kit for the biggners. Please also guide how to use electronic gauge manifold. Thanks.
Thank you for your video. The inside and setting temperatures are matched, but my ac system kept running and could not turn-off at thermostat. 1) What should I look into the problem; solid state timer delay, fan relay, and/or condenser contactor? 2) At condenser contactor, I got 24 V between the coil, how to check LT1 & LT2, what is the voltage at these two terminals?
Hi- I am having trouble with condenser turning on and off within multiple times after start up. >I replaced contactor- didnt work- got 24v at contactor then 11.4v then volts moves all over. >I replaced transformer- same thing. I just watched your video- i wonder if my timer relay could be the issue? I have timer relay + 1 other one. Unit is rheem/2003
Great video!. I have broken my wire connector (I was doing the same thing to tighten but it was fragile). Where can you buy them or is there any solution?
Thanks for the video. Would you please tell me what info on the contactor tag should be the most important for it to work, or is just the voltage and amps as you explained. Also I heard some people replaced the capacitor with one that is little bigger.. Is that a good idea? mine is a dual run 45-5 MFD Thanks a lot

Thank you for the great videos, I've watched several, our heat pump has been running on emergency heat for a couple of weeks (propane) I discovered the single pole contactor had burned up one of the contacts, it's 10 years old, I ordered another on internet $12, should have it in a couple of days 👍
Getting ready to attempt both capacitor and contactor replacement. Wish me luck
We now have someone who knows what they're talking about. Great job Jay❤.
You have the best videos the best tutorial ever 👍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
This was an excellent video, thank you for your high quality and attention to detail. One extra tip: Test your meter at the disconnect before trusting it reads 0 everywhere.
Insane! You explain things clearly. Best video I have seen.
This guy is just full of good game, thanks for sharing man. 💯
Hey, thanks for the info. I paid $8 for the contactor and companies wanted me to pay I’ve 10 x that just to do diagnostic. That’s not including their markup for this part and labor
Thanks for a great video went to my local ac place grab a 15.00 part fixed you saved me a ton of money thanks thanks
Excellent channel! Very helpful information. Thanks for the recommendation of discharging the capacitor! Good safety step.

Word of Advice TV,
I’m looking to sell my Delorean,
It’s in great shape, low mileage.
Only driven from time to time....
Haha nice one! :) I've seen that one on Reddit before. I liked this reply: Good shape? Are you aware that there are easily available recorded videos of the stunts you've pulled with this car? If this car's in good shape then I'm my own father!
Thanks so much for making these videos. Most complete, easiest to understand A/C help videos out there.
Thanks Jay. I will have to watch this later haha. My wife is being induced today for my second child. Keep up the great videos!
Oh wow man! :) Congratulations!! May the whole process go smooth! God bless!

Nice video I just started my first semester for hvac at a trade school and were practicing on electric boards wish me lucky
If you are watching this that means you are learning on your own time aside from school. So I'm sure you will be at the top of the class! Good luck with your career! You made a good choice.
You really have to watch ALL of Jay's videos. I'm 62 y.o. lady and a DIYer and have learned (and am still learning) a whole lot of interesting things that I didn't know about HVAC from Jay's videos.
You always explains my problems so easy thank you.
Jay THANK YOU so much for sharing your AC videos. They are enjoyable, informative and easy to follow. Your videos have tremendously enhanced my comfort level with the operation of my AC. So much so, that I am able to carry a conversation with an AC technician and not feel intimidated. I also feel confident enough to troubleshoot minor issues and/or make minor repairs. Thanks again, you’re the best.
I do have a question regarding single pole AC contactors. Is there a certain brand better than others or a brand I should steer away from?
19 and ty for all your great videos ! You are a master of all trades !
Very detailed explanation! Thanks!
Thanks for all your great videos.
Bro you are the beast you are the best program that you have thank you for everything .

Thanks Jay! My York contactor is burnt and pitted but shows 0 ohms when closed. I think because it was chattering like crazy and the arcing burnt it. Should I change the compressor relay too? Unit is 12 years old.
Like always an excellent video and informative n have a good day
Thanks so much Jay for the awesome video.
Best channel for hvac!!
Excellent description!!
You are awesome I have learned so much from you
Glad to hear that! :) Thank you for watching!
There are other ratings as FLA, LRA, and RES. Can I use a 40 FLA replacement on an older 32 FLA, a higher RES and higher LRA? Thank you for your help
Great!!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
Excellent info!! Thank you so much :)
Out standing video thanks J
Thank you so much for the video. One question: is it safe to put two wires in the same terminal? I have a burnt out wire connector and I am thinking just strip the wire and put it under the screw. And there is already a wire under the screw...
You are the man, thank you so much. You really know your stuff.👍👍👍
2) At condenser contactor, I got 24 V between the coil, how to check LT1 & LT2, what is the voltage at these two terminals?
great tutorial.....I'm a fan
Is that a good idea?
mine is a dual run 45-5 MFD
Thanks a lot
Check out Jay’s videos on replacing the capacitor. I think you’ll find your answer there.
Nice job 👍
