I watch hvac every night and you are my favorite. Thank you for helping us to learn. I ordered a 521 immediately and I will certainly enjoy hearing the compressor kick in the first time.
For those that might still be confused, like I was when first starting, the #5 wire goes to common on the contactor, not the capacitor...1 to run, 2 to start, 5 to common...Thats potential relays...Again, that common, for #5 from the relay, goes ON THE CONTACTOR power out..I've seen people get this wrong, confusing common, but this video is clear and well done.
The circuit diagram that comes with the 521, makes the connection points crystal clear.
@@PH-md8xp For most...Some people think a common wire or terminal is neutral...Of course these people shouldn't be dealing with electric in the first place, but they're out there...They even think a common terminal on a switch is for the common wire and that common wire, the neutral, not the power source...Yeah, Smoke that switch...Like I said, they're out there.
I've done a few of these but I always go back to this video before doing another kit just for a quick refresher.

After watching your video, I installed a 521 3 wire kit that I bought probably almost two years ago but never got around to. Turns out when I opened the electric panel up there was already a Supco SPP7s installed. I pulled that out and put the 521 kit in and I went from loud starts and dimming lights to barely noticeable when the compressor kicks on. I replaced the capacitor at the same time after watching your capacitor video. Turns out neither were the root of my no AC problem as it was the float switch under the fan in my attic - which I determined after watching yet another of your videos. Fantastic resources - thank you!
If you have a clamp meter with an Inrush function, it’s possible to measure the current flowing into the compressor before and after the install of these hard start kits. There’s usually a significant difference and it’s just satisfying to know that the thing is helping your compressor do it’s thing.
I came back to this a year later, a year spent trying to better understand how these devices work. On looking at this again, I was surprised the old capacitor is often left in place, in parallel with the new system. So, rather than replacing a bad component, these devices are designed to turn a PSC motor with no start relay into a CSCR motor. So even after the potential relay cuts out, current can still flow through the old capacitor to the start windings, so the old capacitor remains a true parallel run capacitor. Presumably you want to be sure that old run cap is still good. I was also a little surprised that many of these 3 in 1 kits sold by Amazon don't even mention the capacitance of their new capacitor on their product info, or the design for the relay. Today I used your video to springboard better understanding of the mystery behind the HVAC ton, the 12,000 BTU's of energy needed to melt a ton of ice on the Hudson river. How are you, Jay?

Thanks my Man !! Used your video yesterday and installed a 521 Kit on our 1 year old, 4 Ton, 14 Seer split A/C system that was installed last July. Two things that I noticed after install was that system is a lot quiter on start up and the loud noise that the compressor used to make at the end of each cycle was a lot quiter too and almost non-existent !! Great video, keep up the Good Work !!
Thanks to this guy, I install the hard start kit and it work. But I also instead a new capacitor since it is completely dead. I manage to orient the 3 wire hard start kit in an upright position as indicated on the diagram and on this video...but it is so damm hard to drill a hole and it was hot outside. In the end, I just used tape and hope that it stick. I turn it on and wahla....everything running again. Even the fan is spinning. It wasn't spinning before. First time opening up the air conditioner, I noticed someone had installed a hard start kit compressor previously. So I ended up leaving it there and hooking up both start kits. This is my first time doing this fix and it is a life saver because I have no idea who to call for help. And it is summer and it's hot, I cannot stand the heat.
I installed one of these 5-2-1 Hard Start kits (CSRU2) just like in this video in a Goodman unit from 2016 and it let all the smoke out of the Hard Start Capacitor, looks like I may have a defective unit so I have another on order. Thanks for making this video, I was able to double check that it wasn't me that wired it wrong LOL!
As. Handyman I have been following your channel for quite a while. I really learn plenty. I did this upgrade to my AC system a couple of years ago as I discovered that the inrush amp draw was nearing the locked rotor amp limited listed on the the unit for the compressor. Prior to installing it the unit was struggling to start. You could hear the difference afterwards. It’s an amazing difference. It makes me wonder why AC manufacturers don’t include a “hard start kit” as a normal part of the units. Built in obsolescence perhaps...? Anyway, I enjoy your extremely clear, professionally prepared videos. Your an excellent teacher! I’m always looking forward to see more of your videos! Thank you very much!
Thank you Richard! Glad to hear that my videos have been helpful and that the hard start made a big difference for your unit! As far as I know, many manufacturers actually did include a hard start capacitor and potential relay (basically a 521 kit) in older units. But to cut costs, this "un-necessary" part gradually started being omitted in newer units until now, when it's only the premium expensive units that still come with them. Well it actually kills two birds with one stone for them - the compressor does not last as long so people have to buy a new unit sooner and their production costs slightly decrease.

You are correct that the start capacitor should be installed with the terminals up. As per the instructions: "Mount the 5-2-1® Kit potential relay and start capacitor in a suitable location within the
electrical box. The potential relay should be mounted with the mounting tab up. The capacitor
should be mounted with the terminals up."
REASON: Most Capacitors are oil filled and could be subject to leakage therefore it is always recommended to minimize the chance of leakage

A good analogy I've heard for potential relay wiring is "5-2-1 Can She Run" so 5 to Common, 2 to Start winding and 1 to Run winding

dont know if it helps, but instead of just connecting the wire tabs, i sprayed contact cleaner on every tab of all the components, scrubbed with a toothbrush, then applied conductive carbon grease on the tabs to prevent future corrosion and improve electrical conductivity.
Hadn't thought about conductive grease, or even dilectric grease, but it SURE couldn't hurt! Good idea!
On the capacitor, the 4 terminal stabs is common. The 3 terminal stab is Herm and the 2 terminal stab is Fan. Never any confusion

J you are the man! A few days ago, we had hot weather and the compressor was not starting. This is on a 2001 York 1.5 ton that is running R22. The original capacitor lasted till April 18th, 2018 and was replaced with a Powerwell 30+5 MFD 330 to 440v dual run cap (which is the recommended). Can I install a more powerful capacitor than that one or do you recommend installing a 5 to 1 booster with a new stock size capacitor?

With my 3ton Trane 14i heat pump, I'm installing a 5-2-1 hard start. My replacement kit Mfd cap has about 40% more kick than the OEM TRANE hard start cap (OEM has two caps already) ...is Mfd over-capacity harmful?
Love your videos! You saved me a ton of $$$. On connecting the common to the contactor, I've read multiple opinions on which side to mount the black wire. Some say the shunt side, you said the opposite side of the incoming wires. Maybe the same thing? How can I tell on a Lennox hs29-048?

Great video. The AC company just quoted me $449 to put one in. After yelling at the company (not the tech) for 5 min, I told him that I'll look around. Checked online, and the 3 wire hard start kit was $23.99, and I could not believe why they would quote a price like that. Then thought I'd check YT and came across this great video. So as a non-AC person with no background, it seems like simple DIY. Any words of advice before I venture into this?

I installed this kit on my AC unit months ago, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly.
Thanks to this video, I just learned that I have a single pole contactor, and I attached the black wire of the kit to one of the T1 terminals of the side that has constant line power. That's the side with the black wire coming in and thus why I chose it.
Did I do that correctly? Or should the 5 wire been connected to the other side of the contactor that has the plunger? THANK YOU

I learned a lot from your educational videos. Keep doing a great job to help others. Question for you - how would you wire a 5-2-1 to an AMRAD Dual Run Capacitor 70 + 5 uf MFD 370/440 Volt? Thanks in advance.
Yellow wire goes to the AMRAD capacitor's "CPT" (Compressor Protection Terminal) connector tab. The reason that AMRAD developed this separate tab is to protect the compressor in case the hard-start relay doesn't "kick out" (disconnect). There's an internal fuse between the CPT and HERM. I used that AMRAD 70/5 on my three-year-old Carrier as good insurance, as they are made in the USA (Florida), and are known to be top-tier reliable. I saved the old, OEM cap just in case I ever need it, but doubt I ever will.

Another great video. Thanks for posting. One word of caution. I bought a 521 start kit going on the company recommendation. I have a 4 ton unit so I bought the CSR-U2 which is for 3 1/2 to 5 ton units. While I was waiting for it to be delivered I found the originally equipment manufacturer (OEM) part for my compressor. The start capacitor used is an 88 to 108 µF. When I received the CSR-U2 I noticed the capacitor was 189 to 227 µF ( these specs are clearly marked on the capacitor itself). Looking into the CSR-U1 product (for 1 to 3 ton units) it had an 88 to 108 µF capacitor. Needless to say I sent back the CSR-U2 and got the CSR-U1. Always try and find out what OEM part is used before installing these or just buy the OEM part.
OK...I'm confused. My outdoor Goodman unit (2.5 Tons), has a factory dual start capacitor ( for both compressor and fan), rated at 35/5 uF. The 521 kit for 1-3.5 ton unit has it's own capacitor, as you say....but it's function is slightly altered from a normal unit that undergoes a full, unaltered, hard-start. Therefore a "match" of uF is not warranted between the OEM capacitor and the one provided by the kit.....correct?
A hard start kit give the compressor added starting torque momentarily by paralleling a LARGER capacitor with the compressor run capacitor. Parallel the capacitance of the circuit may be 180-240 mfd and as the amperage drops on start up... the relay drops the start capacitor out of the circuit when it is no longer needed. If you have a 4 ton unit, I would have stayed with whatever model of the 521 kit, it says you need.Seems the latest kits show one kit up to 3 tons (1-3)...and the next kit starting at 3.5 tons (3.5-5)....so there is no borderline overlap either that you seem to have encountered at 4T.
@@TheWilferch - I’m not sure all about that. All I know is the compressor I have has a part listing that shows an optional start kit with a capacitor rating that matches the smaller 521 start kit so I went with that.
@@condor5635 ...just make sure you know what you are comparing. Most 521 hard start kits have their capacitor rated at a higher uF than the normal start capacitor of the factory unit. The "optional start kit" you say you see listed by your factory listing....may not be a 521 kit. I'd check further. The sentence I show comes from another technical source on hard start kits ---> this one---> "A hard start kit give the compressor added starting torque momentarily by paralleling a LARGER capacitor with the compressor run capacitor. Parallel the capacitance of the circuit may be 180-240 mfd and as the amperage drops on start up... the relay drops the start capacitor out of the circuit when it is no longer needed. "
@@TheWilferch - of course what they have listed is not a 521 kit. They want you to go buy their ‘kit’ not buy a 521 kit. They are the same thing. I have a 60 µF run capacitor so either 521 kit will have a LARGER capacitor than that as you state - the smaller one is 108 microfarads and the larger one is 220 microfarads or something like that. The capacitor for my compressor ‘start kit’ is 108 µF which matches the smaller 1/2/3 ton 521 kit. Both kits will work but the smaller one is better matched apparently to what my compressor needs and is clearly listed in the parts available for it. I just installed a 5-2-1 hard start kit following your video today! Thanks so much! I have a question for you. Would the AC still running fine if the kit is actually not working? I am asking because I have another AC which has the kit installed already. I suspect the kit is not working because when AC starts the lights blink.
Some heat pumps have a terminal on the circuit board specifically for the black wire. If you have a heat pump, look at the schematic on the cover. It will usually show the hard start wiring with dotted lines. Follow that schematic or the unit may not start.
FYI If you want your relay for compressor to last a long time, buy one rated for higher amp and also in my case I had a single pole relay 30 amp, so I bought a 40 amp and a double pole, connecting both poles together so it's now a 80 amp relay, good to outlast unit. Relay failure can damage compressor. A start relay is completely different part/function.

Consider adding an Emerson SureSwitch. It is an electronic contactor that closes on the zero crossing of the AC signal which helps eliminate arcing. It is protected from ants and insects, and has brown out protection.

Hi, Thank You for showing how to connect the 3 Hard Start Kit wires to the dual run capacitor and the contactor. The instructions paper is NOT CLEAR on the red wire ( say to connect to the contactor ? ). Thanks :)
Fyi You had stated that it didn't make a difference which way the hard start capacitor was seated, only the relay.
I noticed in the instructions that the hard start capacitor should be placed in the upright position even though it can slip down if not tight. I was told there is some gel in there so it is best seated in the upright position. Anyone else can chime in to clarify!

Okay buddy 👍 I'm the first one Jay 👌... hope all is well with you and your family.. we are doing pretty good today me and Arnold and bigfoot... ol bigfoot is feeling much better than he has I'm very thankful for this...boy it's hot outside here and has been for the last few days.. you take care of yourself buddy and don't get to hot..I got to hot Thursday and I got nauseated and felt like throwing up and I had to get in the shade I was painting a hot tin roof.lol. I barely got off the roof before my legs went out..so you be careful working out in the heat..how are the chickens doing? My neighbor ol hen just hatched off 8 little chickens day before yesterday.. she came over here and layed some eggs and the black snake ate every egg and she moved her nest and layed some more eggs and started setting... they are black and white striped little doodler's...

It's not too hot in Minnesota lately so it sounds like you're the one who needs to use more caution out there :) Stay hydrated, wear a hat, and take breaks. I was painting the outside of my house in the sun last week though and I can understand a little.. It does get really hot! One of my chickens was killed by a weasel at night. I got out there before it could kill the others. I started closing their coop door for the night now. Oh dear, instead of weasels, there's snake problems over there.. I don't know what's worse.
@@WordofAdviceTV I hope all goes well with your moving that is a very stressful situation.. yes I have to watch the sun because we're I'm on high blood pressure medication it makes me very sensitive to the sun sometimes I skip it when I will be out working but it is still in my system.. yeah I wear a cap all the time I tell everyone it's my signature look.lol..i put it on straight in the morning and it will move to the right side and turn up a little just like people used to wear those felt hats back in the day.. that was a hobby of mine several years ago was collecting ol hats I have every kind ever made under the sun.. several top hats and the original box they came in.. I dress up the dogs sometimes...lol. I sent an email to Suppco asking what temp their SPP6 cuts off, and if they should not be used in warmer climates that consistently get into the 110* range. Here is his exact reply, "The PTC relay drops from the circuit at about 160° or so. It can, and has been used in warmer environments."
If you are a service tech, install the 5-2-1. The 2 wire might have you returning for a free service call to replace it
Can you still use this with a communicating system(Amana/Goodman, 18seer) that doesn't have a typical contactor...looks as if the supply voltage goes right into the main board. This unit has a copeland scroll compressor just like the others I have done but just not sure if I should mess with it since it's all integrated into the main board. Unit runs fine, just seems to make a lot of noise when starting.

We just had a quote from a local HVAC company to install a hard start kit for $439. Unbelievable.
I wish my Goodman CK60 had as much room inside for a hard start. its a tight fit to get both in there..
Hi, I have questions about the hard starter kit. Does the starter kit vary between different systems? My system has a hard start capacitor with 88-108MFD 330VAC 60/50 Hz rated at 65 deg C. I replaced it earlier when the Duel run capacity failed (I have no idea it's a hard starter capacitor when I replaced it). However, I didn't put the resistor back on the new hard start capacitor. Will it hurt the a/c unit? If I have to put the resistor back ... what kind of resister needed (the old one has been trashed). Thx
